The type of score that many film music fans have been missing - a good fantasy adventure score. It's not that composers are not capable of writing a fantasy score like, Krull, Conan the Barbarian, Willow, Clash of the Titans or Hook, but these kind of "sword and sorcery" films just seem to disappear in the industry. There was Kull: The Conquerer in 1996 but it only got a rock-based score by Joel Goldsmith. Warriors of Virtue makes the future of "sword and sorcery" film even dimmer. It was totally a disaster in the box-office (probably also because the movie is really bad). Despite of that, Don Davis composed a great symphonic fantasy score. The main theme is kind of standard but I still like it very much. It is heroic, sort of larger than life. It does not expose in full until trumpets and strings playing it midway through the score. Other than the main theme, there are also other sub-themes. The action cues will really get your blood pumping. Although the Denver Symphony Orchestra is no the mighty London Symphony Orchestra, it is good enough to get some kicks out of the score. Altough the score is symphonic, it is not rousing like Conan or Hook. It's more like a gentle symphony with many great moments. There're also a songs album from Rhino records for this movie and it has only a few minutes of the score on it. So, if you want the score, be careful not to get the wrong one. This CD is a Belgium import, so it will not be in many regular retail stores. But it should not be very hard to find. Speaking of Don Davis, he has not done many scores for films. Most of his works are TV scores. But he is very active as a film music orchestrator. He has orchestrated most of James Horner scores. So, I am not surprised that he composed such a great score. | |
