Doug and Carol: A Somewhat Romantic Story
By: Kathleen Bergman
Act Two
It now appears to be a lot later in the evening. Doug and Carol are sitting on the couch eating pizza
and watching the movie. Carol's shoes are off and her knees are curled up to her chest. Doug's
shoes are also off and he's drinking a cup of coffee. They're sitting somewhat close together and
Carol gets up and walks into the kitchen to refill her coffee mug. She comes back into the
livingroom and sits down really and cuddles in really close to Doug (who's arm is across the back
of the couch) not even knowing it. Cut to show time lapse. Carol is asleep her head laying on
Doug's chest. He gingerly puts his arm around her shoulders and he closes his eyes and falls asleep.
(show another time lapse and we can here the TV playing)
Carol wakes up and looks around at her surroundings slightly startled. She gently pulls away from
Doug and looks for her shoes half panicked. Doug stirs and also wakes he watches Carol who
doesn't take notice of him.
Doug: Good morning.
Carol: (startled) Oh uh morning. Have you seen my other shoe?
Doug: (looking around) Yeah it's right here. (hands her the shoe) Carol why are
you so flustered?
Carol: (hurriedly slipping on the shoe) Flustered? What do you mean? I've just
got to hurry and get to work.
Doug: Carol? It's Saturday and neither you or I are on today.
Carol: Oh. Well I... What I mean is... You see... (Doug's looking at her with a
teasing smile on his face) I'm just... Oh I don't know!
Doug: How about I fix some toast and eggs and you can make that special
coffee you make so well.
Carol: (smiling with relief) Okay. (they walk into the kitchen)
Another time lapse is shown and Carol and Doug are in the bedroom again picking up and having a
laundry fight.
Carol: Do you know what? Next Friday night I'm taking you to the Laundromat
to get this pile of clothes washed. My treat.
Doug: (sarcastically) Oh thank you so much. It's what I've always dreamed
about doing for a Friday night date.
Carol: Good then your wish has come true. (she then places a hand on her
stomach suddenly) Ow! Oh man what was that?
Doug: (hurrying to Carol's side) Carol are you alright?
Carol: Yeah. It was just this sharp pain. I'm fine.
Doug: Why don't you sit down for a minute and rest?
Carol: Doug I said I'm fine. Don't worry about it.
Doug: I'm the doctor and the doctor says to sit down!
Carol: I'm the nurse and the nurse says she's fine!
Doug: You are as stubborn as a mule! (to himself) Some things never change.
(he picks her up and carries her over to a rocking chair in the corner) Now sit
there and relax!
Carol: Don't tell me what to do!
Doug: Carol for crying out loud... Just lay back and take it easy.
Carol: Fine! After all your the doctor and the doctor knows best.
Doug: Right! I'm going to go get you a glass of milk. Now rest!
Carol: Aren't we over reacting just a tad?
Doug: No. I don't think we are. (he leaves the room and Carol leans back in the
chair, closes her eyes and sighs. Cut to show yet another time lapse)
Carol is now lying on the bed asleep and Doug is in the rocking chair watching her in case she
needs anything. He walks around to the other side of the bed and opens the drawer of the night
stand and takes out a picture that Mark had taken. It showed him and Carol outside the hospital
hugging and smiling. As he looked at it now tears came to his eyes as he wished that he and Carol
could again have that special relationship that they once shared. Just then Carol stirs and screams
in pain.
Doug: (rushing to her) Carol? Carol what's wrong?
Carol: (clutching her stomach) I don't know, ow! Doug help me! You're
the doctor! What's wrong?
Doug: I don't know! Wait have you had your appendix out?
Carol: (closing her eyes against the pain) What?
Doug: It could be appendices. Have you had your appendix removed.
Carol: No. Ahhhh! Oh Doug it hurts!
Doug: Okay I'll call the hospital for an ambulance.
Carol: Okay hurry!
He runs out of the room the camera follows him to the kitchen and then jumps back to Carol who
is lying on the bed breathing heavily. Doug comes back in and holds her hand while they wait for
the ambulance to arrive.
