"Happily Ever After"
Part Two
Scene Three: Mark and Susan's Reception
Scene opens at their outdoor reception. Music is playing and people are dancing, laughing and
having fun. Mark and Susan are talking quietly as they dance.
Susan: (smiling) What a terrific ceremony, huh? I love you. I can't believe we
are finally married.
Mark: (leans over and kisses her) I love you, Mrs. Greene.
Susan: We have some work to do at this reception. (grins mischeviously) We've
got to get Doug and Carol back together. Did you see them- they couldn't keep
their eyes off of each other. That's some pretty powerful stuff they have going
on there. (smiling) I thought Doug's eyes were going to pop out when he saw
her! (chuckles)
Mark: I know. I've never seen a look like that on Doug's face. He loves her so
much.
Susan: (frowns) Yeah, Carol loves him, too. They're both just too damn
stubborn to admit how they feel. (smiles) That's where we come in and help.
(At this point, Susan notices Carol dancing with some of the other nurses and
sees Doug watching her. A slow song begins as Mark goes over to Doug.
Mark: (smiling) Hey, buddy!
Doug: Hey, Mark! Congratulations! It was a great ceremony.
Mark: You noticed? (smiling) Looked like you and Carol were in your own
world. You still love her, don't you?
Doug: (looking down) Of course I do. I don't think I'll ever stop loving her.
Mark: So why aren't you telling her this?
Doug: I'm scared....scared that she won't still love me. I've hurt her so much in
the past, and I never want to put her through that kind of pain again.
Mark: You've changed.
Doug: I know that, but does she?
Mark: Besides all that, look at the way you two were at the church. You couldn't
keep your eyes off each other.
Doug: (grinning and picturing those looks again in his mind) Yeah....
Mark: You need to talk to her. Go ask her to dance.
Doug: (protesting) Mark, I....
Mark: (interrupting firmly) Go, Doug!
Doug walks over to Susan and Carol, who are talking.
Doug: (smiling) Hello, ladies. Congratulations, Susan! (leans over and hugs her)
Susan: Thanks, Doug!
Carol looks up at Doug, smiles and then looks back down.
Doug: (nervously) Carol, would you like to dance?
Carol: (grin spreads across her face) OK.
Doug grabs her hand and leads her to the dance floor. From across the lawn, Mark gives Susan a
"thumbs up" sign and Susan grins.
Doug: (looking at Carol as they dance) You look beautiful.
Carol: (blushing) You look great, too. The wedding was so great! Mark and
Susan looked so happy, so in love.
Doug: (look of longing) Yeah.... (music ends and Carol and Doug stop dancing)
Carol: (smiling) Thanks for the dance, Doug? See you later?
Doug: (grins, although disappointed) Of course. (walks away)
Both are now mumbling to themselves, each saying that they should have told the other about their
feelings. Mark and Susan flash each other disappointed looks.
Announcer: Time for the bride to throw the bouquet. All single ladies in the
center.
Everyone makes a mad dash to the center, all screaming and cheering.
Susan: (back turned, about ready to throw it) Everybody ready? 1....2...3!
(throws it)
Everyone scrambles as the bouquet lands in Carol Hathaway's hands. Everyone cheers as Carol
blushes.
Susan: (cheering) Woo-hoo!! Alright Carol!
All females: (chanting) Carol's next! Carol's next! (etc..)
Carol (smiling) looks around ans as soon as she spots Doug, she notices him looking at her and he
smiles. She can't help but smile back. (Another slow song has started now and Mark and Susan
dance, soon joined by other couples) Doug walks over to Carol.
Doug: Hey, Carol! Good job!
Carol: Doug- Hi. Let's go out front for a minute, ok?
Doug: (puzzled, but smiles) OK- let's go.
Doug and Carol walk together and stop at a bench and sit down. Carol take a deep breath and
Doug sits and twiddles his thumbs. They sit in silence for a minute.
Doug: So, what's up?
Carol: Ok...I don't know where to start. What were we doing during the
ceremony?
Doug: (confused) What do you mean?
Carol: I saw the way you looked at me when I walked up the aisle. And, we
both know how we were the whole way through the ceremony. (looks down)
Doug: Carol, you know how I feel about you....
Carol: (interrupts) No, Doug....I don't. I keep hoping that things will happen
between us again...
Doug: (interrupts) What?? You mean....are you saying that you would want me
back... I...I...can't believe it..
Carol: Oh no. I was afraid that I was taking things the wrong way. I figured that
you had probably given up on me, but I had to hope that...
Doug: No, no, Carol. I'm not saying that at all! I figured that you would never
take me back after everything I had done. I wouldn't blame you. I love you,
Carol! Nothing has ever changed that. I feel like I am dying inside. I have been
ever since we broke up. I want you back, I need you back.
Carol: (tears running down her cheeks) Oh, Doug. If I had only known..if you
had only known. I've missed you so much...needed you so much. I love you,
too.
Doug: You have to know something. When I watched Susan walk down the
aisle, all I could picture was you walking to me in a wedding gown. (Carol looks
suprised) I kept imagining us in their place.
Carol: Oh, wow. I was doing the same thing the entire time.
Doug: Let's go back, ok?
Carol: Ok.
Doug grabs Carol's hand lightly and they stand up. As they start to walk away, Doug wraps his
arms around here and they share a kiss. They stand there for another minute, in a passionate kiss,
before walking back to the reception hand in hand. When they return, they go to the dance floor,
and begin to dance again, this time holding each other closer. They are talking and laughing,
occasionally sharing a kiss. Mark and Susan look in shock as they notice what's going on. Happily,
they continue to dance on their own and talk about how great it is that Doug and Carol are finally
back together. Carol and Doug decide to leave soon after, so that they can have some time alone.
They walk hand in hand over to tell Mark and Susan good-bye.
Doug: (smiling) Hey guys, we came to say goodnight. We're going to head
on out of here.
Mark and Susan: (taking turns hugging them) Thanks for coming. And,
Congratulations. You guys are finally back together?
Doug and Carol: (looking into each others eyes and smiling, then looking at
Mark and Susan) Oh, yeah. (laughing and smiling, they walk away arm in arm)
Doug turns back to Mark and winks, just as Carol is looking back at Susan and smiles. End of
scene.
Final Scene: County General
Time lapse- 6 months, to the day, after the wedding.
Carol Hathaway is coming in to start her shift. As she arrives at her desk, she notices a vase with
two dozen long stem red roses with a big red bow tied around it. She smiles as she takes the card
and reads it. "Sweetheart- Just some beautiful roses for my beautiful fiancee. I love you more than
life, and I can't wait to marry you. Happy 6 month anniversary! I love you! -Doug" Carol looks
down at the engagement ring Doug had given her, just two weeks ago, and smiles. She is so happy.
Doug comes up behind her and wraps his arms around her waist.
Doug: (smiling) Good morning, beautiful!
Carol: (turns and wraps her arms around his neck and ksses him) Thank you so
much for the roses, they're beautiful. You are the sweetest, and I love you.
Doug: (kisses her again) Glad you liked them, and I love you, too. Can you
believe that in just six short months we will be getting married? (Doug and Carol
are getting married on the anniversary of when they got back together.)
Carol: (sighs contentedly) Oh, I know. I can't believe this is happening.
Doug: I know. Who would have thought that Dr. Doug Ross would be getting
married? (chuckles) That's what happens when I am finally back together with
the woman I want to be with forever.
Carol: (smiles) So, what do you think, is it 'Happily Ever After'?
Doug: (smiles back) Oh, you better believe it. Happily ever after. (And with that,
Doug and Carol kiss, and continue until the screen fades to black.)
