ER
"Hush My Darling "
Part Four

Cut to: Doug and Carol's later that evening. They are both in the nursery painting the walls a pale lavender color. Carol puts her paintbrush down and goes over to the other side of the room where Doug is working. She walks up behind him and lays her head on his shoulder.

Doug: (smiles down at her) Hi.

Carol: Hi.

Doug: What are you doing?

Carol: Cuddling with you. You mind?

Doug: (puts down his own paintbrush and puts his arms around her) Never.

Carol: (suddenly puts her hand to her stomach) Ow!

Doug: (anxiousness in his eyes, pulls back to look at his wife) Carol? What is it? Are you okay?

Carol: (smiles at his concern) I'm fine. The baby's just kicking.

Doug: (puts his hand along side hers on her stomach) Carol you've never looked more beautiful then you do now with our daughter inside you.

He pulls Carol closer to him and kisses her sweetly on her lips. Carol wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him back. Doug picks her up and they leave the room. Camera stays in the room and doesn't follow them.

Fade scene to black.

Cut to: The bedroom the next morning. Doug opens his eyes and looks over at Carol who is sleeping peacefully next to him and smiles. He gets up, slips on his robe and goes downstairs. We hear him starting the coffee and the door opening as he goes out to get the paper. We then watch as Carol slowly wakes up and makes her way downstairs. She smiles as she watches Doug fix breakfast.

Carol: Good morning.

Doug: Morning honey. How are you holding up?

Carol: I'm fine. Really I am. Just hungry. What are you making?

Doug: (proudly) The famous Ross breakfast. Bacon, eggs, coffee, and toast.

Carol: When was the last time you made a breakfast like this?

Doug: Last November. I made a great breakfast for Kelly Stuart.

Carol: Who's Kelly Stuart?

Doug: Oh she was great. Married, but a really great girl. (looks at Carol's shocked face and begins to laugh)

Carol: Douglas Ross! (hits him over his head with the newspaper) You better watch it. I'm pregnant and irritable. If you're not careful you may wind up in ER as a patient!

Doug: (still laughing) Okay, okay I'll be good.

Carol smiles and pours herself a cup of coffee and takes a section of the paper and begins to read. Suddenly she clutches a hand to her stomach and groans.

Doug: (turning toward his wife with the same anxious expression as the
night before) Carol? What is it? Carol?

Carol: I think I'm having a contraction.

Doug: Now? But your not due for another 2 weeks!

Carol: (breathing heavily) I'm sorry but I don't have much of a choice in the matter. You're the pediatrician for crying out loud, you should know that better than anybody.

Doug: Okay, I'm sorry. Let's get your bag packed and get dressed.

He helps Carol upstairs where she slips on a white maternity dress and he puts on his usual scrubs. They throw some things in a duffel bag and hurry downstairs.

Cut to: Carol's hospital room, not far away from the delivery room. Carol is lying there in obvious pain, doing her breathing exercises. Sweat is trickling sown her face. Doug is holding her hand and coaching her encouragingly.

Doug: Come on Carol breathe. You're doing great. Just breathe. (Carol squeezes his hand tightly) Ow.

Carol: You're telling me. (groans, through the pain) This is all your fault! Never do this to me again! When this is over I'm hiring a hit man to kill you! (groans loudly)

Doug: Okay you do that. But for right now just calm down and breathe. In and out... that's right. Good.

Carol: I can't do this anymore.

Doug: Yes you can. You're doing great.

The door to Carol's room opens and the doctor comes in. He checks the monitor and her dilation.

Doctor: Okay it looks like we can move you into delivery. You ready.

Carol: (exhausted and in pain) Yes. Let's do it.

A nurse comes in and they roll Carol down the hall. Camera follows as they wheel her into the delivery room.

Cut to show a short time lapse. In the delivery room we see Doug holding Carol's hand and Carol yelling in pain. We hear the doctor tell her to push one more time and then we hear a baby cry.

Doctor: You have a beautiful baby girl. (holds the baby up for them to see)

Carol sinks back in exhaustion and relief. Doug looks at the baby in aw as the nurses take her off to be washed and weighed. Show Doug and Carol smiling happily.
