I'm so pleased that this excellent site exists. I'm a huge Oliver Reed fan,
and happen to think that he has been incredibly important to the British
film industry. Yet, it is almost impossible to find out anything about him!
Worse than that, it is really difficult to get hold of any of his films
in England. Where would we be without the internet? I have managed to get
quite a few of his best films through the net from America.
This is mad, bad and sad. Why is his autobiography (Reed All About
Me) STILL out of print? Why is there only ONE book published about his
films? And why do most film history books ignore him? Even a recent tribute
to chat-shows, broadcast in England only showed one 'blink and you missed
it' clip of Ollie...with his glorious past? What were they afraid of? Sorry,
but this was ONE HELL OF A MAN and a massively underrated actor to boot.
Even the brilliant film Gladiator doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I know fans of this site will understand my frustration. It really isn't
the same without him, is it?
Regarding Oliver Reed and Russell Crowe in Gladiator:
I really do think they have much in common. In 'Romper Stomper' Crowe managed
to convey menacing brutality whilst still gaining your sympathy (something
Reed did effortlessly).
In LA Confidential Crowe radiated both physical strength and inner-hurt
(again Reed was a master at this). Also, in real life, Crowe comes across
as quite rugged and earthy (Ollie personified these qualities!).
Hmmm...it'll be interesting to see what Russell Crowe will do next!

Though I've only seen just three of his films, (Oliver!,Women
in Love and Gladiator) I see that he has a great screen presence.
He was an unbelieveably attractive man. I am eager to see more of his films.
(there are so many!) Russell Crowe had the right idea when choosing Oliver
to appear in Gladiator (I beleive Russell requested Oliver for the
part). I see that Oliver and Russell have an intensity and perhaps a darkness
of character that is compareable. I think Oliver Reed had a strong talent.
It sounds like his drinking buddies miss his presence and so do the rest
of us.

I''m glad your site is around. I was able to get a lot of good information
from it. Even though Oliver Reed is gone and there is only so much information
that can be obtained, I still want it. The more I find out about him the
more I like him. I'm just sorry he's gone. Like most great actors we don't
show our appreciation and support until after they are gone.
