Paris tells the Doctor that Chakotay gives him a hard time when his conn report is late; in a matter of hours Chakotay begins to show classic signs of aging such as bone decalcification, tissue necrosis and decreased visual acuity; Chakotay's DNA that regulates body metabolism has been hyperstimulated somehow; he loses his hair, his eyesight worsens, and he develops chronic arthritis in his fingers. Chakotay suggests that they leave Voyager behind and break the crew into smaller groups to try to make it across Krenim space in the escape pods and shuttles; he gives Janeway a replica of Captain Cray's chronometer as a birthday present; the Krenim kidnap Chakotay and Paris from Voyager.
