Arturis (Ray Wise) - Arturis stepped in and acted as a translator for Neelix when the universal translator went offline; he knows over 4000 languages; his people have a natural ability with languages; the Borg call Arturis's people Species 116; Arturis decrypts the data stream by extracting the iconometric elements and triaxilating a recursion matrix; he says that data block 14 beta is irreparably damaged; Janeway's suspicions about Arturis are confirmed when she discovers that Arturis tampered with the Starfleet message; Arturis puts the Dauntless into slipstream to take Janeway and Seven back to Borg space. Auto navigation - The helm of the Dauntless was set to auto navigation to the coordinates where Voyager finds it; when Chakotay, Paris and Tuvok are on the ship, the auto navigation kicks in and takes them over 15 light years away before they are able to shut it down. (Hope and Fear)

Borg - Arturis tells Seven that she is much more attractive than the average drone; the Borg called Arturis's people Species 116; Arturis says that the Borg collective is like a force of nature; Seven says that the quantum slipstream drive is similar to the transwarp drive of the Borg; Arturis says that his people have managed to elude the Borg for centuries, but they were assimilated after the Borg defeated Species 8472; Arturis doesn't blame the Borg since he says they were just drones acting with their collective instinct; when the slipstream shuts down, the Dauntless is surrounded by Borg cubes. Chapman, Admiral (Jack Shearer) - Janeway jokingly says that the message she has been trying to decrypt could be Admiral Chapman's recipe for the perfect pound cake. (Hope and Fear)
Cranial implant - Janeway adjusts Seven's cranial implant which alters Seven's bioelectric field so that she can pass through the force field. (Hope and Fear)
Data block 14 beta - Arturis says that this part of the Starfleet message is too degraded to recover; Janeway uses a new decryption algorithm to reconstruct the data block and finds a message from Admiral Hayes saying that Starfleet was unsuccessful in finding a way to get them home. Data stream - After five months, the Voyager crew still have not been able to decrypt the coded message in the data stream from the Alpha Quadrant; Arturis reconstructs over 68 kiloquads of information from the data stream but says that data block 14 beta is too degraded to recover; Janeway is able to reconstruct this last fragment of the data stream and learns that Arturis tampered with the message. Delta Quadrant - In the Starfleet message, Admiral Hayes says that they have sent Voyager all the data they've collected on the Delta Quadrant; Arturis says that there were other species in the Delta Quadrant that had a vested interest in the war between the Borg and Species 8472. (Hope and Fear)
Earth - According to the Starfleet message, it will take 3 months on the USS Dauntless for the Voyager crew to get back to Earth; Kim tells Seven that Earth has got just about every ecosystem you can think of and hundreds of different humanoids species living there. (Hope and Fear)
Force field - Arturis uses a force field to prevent Janeway and Seven from stopping the ship; Janeway adjusts Seven's cranial implant which alters Seven's bioelectric field so that she can pass through the force field. (Hope and Fear)
Hayes, Admiral - In the Starfleet message that Arturis tampers with, Admiral Hayes tells the Voyager crew about the experimental slipstream technology and encourages them to use the Dauntless to get home; Janeway says that the admiral is a good man and a fine officer, but a bit of a windbag; in the message that Janeway decrypts from data block 14 beta, Admiral Hayes says that Starfleet hasn't found anything to help the crew get back home. Klingon - Janeway says that she still struggles with basic Klingon; Arturis says that Klingon is a robust language. (Hope and Fear)

Slipstream - The slipstream on the Dauntless is being created when the energy from the quantum drive is routed through the main deflector; according to the message from Admiral Hayes that Arturis decrypts, slipstream technology is experimental and high risk but has come a long way in the past year; Janeway tells Paris to try to make modifications to Voyager so that the ship can create a slipstream; Arturis puts the Dauntless into slipstream to take Janeway and Seven back to Borg space; the modifications to Voyager allow the ship to attain slipstream velocity; after Voyager rescued Janeway and Seven, the ship remained in the quantum slipstream for over an hour before it finally collapsed. Species 116 - The Borg called Arturis's people Species 116; Seven says that the Borg have never been able to assimilate them; Arturis says that his people have managed to elude the Borg for centuries, but they were assimilated after the Borg defeated Species 8472; about ten to twenty thousand of his species managed to survive. Species 8472 - Arturis says that Species 8472 was his people's last hope to defeat the Borg; he is angry with Janeway because she helped the Borg defeat them; Janeway says that she believed that Species 8472 posed a greater threat than the Borg. (Hope and Fear)
Starfleet - After five months, the crew of Voyager still hasn't been able to decrypt the coded messaged from Starfleet; when they find the Dauntless, they believe that Starfleet has sent them the ship; according to the Starfleet message that Arturis decrypts, Starfleet has sent them an experimental ship with a quantum slipstream drive that will allow them to get home in only three months; Janeway discovers that Arturis tampered with the Starfleet message; the real message from Starfleet is from Admiral Hayes who says that Starfleet was unsuccessful in finding a way to get Voyager home. Transwarp drive - Seven says that the quantum slipstream drive is similar to the transwarp drive of the Borg. (Hope and Fear)
USS Dauntless - Voyager finds the Dauntless at the coordinates they find in the part of the data stream that Arturis decrypts; the Dauntless's registry number is NX01A; it was launched on stardate 51472; the ship traveled 60,000 light years in 3 months to get to the coordinates set on the auto navigation; the ship has a quantum slipstream drive; the message from Admiral Hayes encourages the Voyager crew to use the Dauntless to get home and that that everything the crew needs is on the ship; the Dauntless doesn't have any shuttlecraft, holodecks, or replicators and only has one transporter; Arturis puts the Dauntless into slipstream to take Janeway and Seven back to Borg space; Arturis destroys the navigational controls on the Dauntless so that no one can stop the ship; Voyager fires on the ship to disable their shields and beam Janeway and Seven back to Voyager; when the slipstream shuts down, the Dauntless is surrounded by Borg cubes. USS Voyager - If the Voyager crew used the Dauntless to get home, they would have to leave Voyager behind; Janeway tells Paris to try to make modifications to Voyager so that the ship can create a slipstream; Arturis says that he hoped to get Voyager's entire crew on the Dauntless so that they would be assimilated; the modifications to Voyager allow the ship to attain slipstream velocity so that they can follow the Dauntless; Kim says that the ship's hull will start to buckle in less than an hour; after rescuing Janeway and Seven, Voyager remained in the quantum slipstream for over an hour before it finally collapsed and managed to get 300 light years closer to home.
