Brig - Nimira says that Voyager's brig seems barbaric; Tuvok says that it is only used to ensure the safety of others or to confine a hostile alien until the proper authorities can be notified; he tells Nimira that on rare occasions they have incarcerated a crew member who has committed a serious infraction; the brig has been occupied for less than 1 % of Voyager's journey; Tuvok confines Guill in the brig until he can be turned over to Nimira. Engramatic purge - Torres will be released after she has undergone an engramatic purge; this purge is a medical procedure that removes the offending images from the mind; Nimira says that Frane will undergo this purge as well; it could be a dangerous procedure since there is a risk of neurological damage; Nimira says that it will take the Mari a day to reconfigure their instruments; Janeway says that if they aren't successful in preventing the Mari from carrying out the sentence on Torres that she hopes the Doctor can figure out how to reverse an engramatic purge; Nimira begins the engramatic purge on Torres but stops the procedure when Janeway tells her that Tuvok can prove that Torres is innocent. Frane (Bobby Burns) - Frane attacks a merchant on Mari; Nimira says that Torres's violent thought instigated this attack; Frane will undergo an engramatic purge to remove the violent images from his mind; according to the Mari security records, Frane was arrested on 4 previous occasions for harboring violent thought; the Mari classified him as "habitual perpetrator of hostile images"; Nimira says that his thoughts were purged each time and that Frane has been through years of neurogenic restructuring in order to cure him; Tuvok believes that Frane had a relapse and that he alone is responsible for his actions; engramatic scans of Frane show that Torres's thought was prevalent in his mind during the attack; Frane and Guill conspired to provoke a violent thought in Torres and then telepathically draw it from her mind. Guill (Wayne Pere) - A Mari merchant; Janeway and Torres buy a resonant coil from Guill; during the mind meld with Tuvok, Torres remembers that Guill gave her the creeps and that he wanted something terrible from her; Guill says that his children get upset when he's late for supper; Tuvok senses Guill's fascination with Tuvok's unconscious thoughts and that he would like to see more of them if he could; Guill offers to help Tuvok learn to deal with his dark impulses; he says that he gets the violent thoughts by buying, sharing and sometimes taking them from others; Guill claims that Frane extracted the violent thought from Torres but Tuvok concludes that Guill extracted the thought from her as well; Tuvok attempts to take Guill into custody but he is attacked by Malin and another man; Tuvok initiates a mind meld with Guill and shows him thoughts so dark that Guill begs him to stop; Tuvok takes Guill into custody and then turns him over to Nimira; Guill is a prominent figure in the black market of violent thoughts that is prevalent in Mari society; he and Frane conspired to provoke a violent thought in Torres and then telepathically draw it from her mind. Malin (Ted Barba) - Guill charges Malin 3000 renns for the thoughts he is going to sell to him; after Tuvok offers to telepathically exchange violent thoughts, Guill tells Malin to come back later; Malin and another Mari man attack Tuvok when he tries to take Guill into custody. (Random Thoughts)
Mari - Voyager has spent the last 3 days on the Mari homeworld; the Mari are a telepathic species; according to Nimira, there is virtually no crime left in their society and violence no longer exists; it is a crime on Mari to think violent thoughts; Paris says that the Mari are a bunch of pacifists and no match for Voyager; Tuvok thinks Mari should be applauded for their effort to eliminate violent thought; Tuvok discovers that there is a black market of violent thoughts on Mari and that outlawing violent thoughts hasn't made them go away. Mind meld - Tuvok mind melds with Torres in order to experience her memories surrounding the crime; Torres says that she doesn't like the idea of a mind meld any more than she likes the idea of an engramatic purge; during the mind meld Torres remembers that Guill gave her the creeps and that he wanted something terrible from her; Tuvok initiates a mind meld with Guill and shows him thoughts so dark that Guill begs him to stop. Nimira (Gwynth Walsh) - Nimira is the Chief Examiner for the Constabulary on Mari; she says that she is becoming obsolete since there is virtually no crime left in their society; Tuovk gives Nimira a tour of Voyager and its security facilities; she is recalled to the surface after the Frane's attack; Nimira arrests Torres for "aggravated violent thought resulting in grave bodily harm"; Tuvok says that Nimira is a skilled investigator; Nimira has never dealt with a murder investigation so she asks for Tuvok's help; she initiates the engramatic purge on Torres but then stops when Janeway says that Tuvok can prove that Torres is innocent. Renn - This is a unit of currency on Mari; Janeway and Torres buy a resonantor coil from Guill for 250 renns; Guill charges Malin 3000 renns for the thoughts he is going to sell to him. (Random Thoughts)

Talchok musk - Neelix is wearing Talchok musk; he says that it is a very enticing scent but Paris tells him that he should go easier on the musk. (Random Thoughts)
Talli (Rebecca McFarland) - Neelix is going down to the planet hoping for a romantic rendevous with Talli; she has a produce shop on Mari; Talli senses that Neelix would like for her to tug on his whiskers; after Frane's attack, Talli says that she has never seen so much blood; she had heard about someone getting beaten once when she was a little girl and had nightmares for weeks; Mrs. Tembit attacks and kills Talli when Talli accidently drops some produce. Telepathy - Nimira asks Tuvok why he prefers speaking aloud to using telepathy; he says that he has become accustomed to speaking aloud since there are very few telepaths in Starfleet; Nimira says that in a race of telepaths, everyone must be responsible for their own thought; Neelix says that he has never liked telepathy and that it is bad for negotiations; Guill senses that Tuvok is a telepath. Tembit, Mrs. (Jeanette Miller) - Mrs. Tembit attacks and kills Talli after Talli accidently drops some produce; Neelix says that she was as shocked and confused as everyone else after the attack; Nimira says that Mrs. Tembit attacked Talli in response to the same violent thought that provoked the earlier attack; Tuvok and Nimira decide to trace her whereabouts for the last few days; Guill says that Mrs. Tembit begged him for Torres's thought. USS Voyager - Janeway and Torres buy a resonator coil on Mari in order to upgrade Voyager's communication system; Tuvok gives Nimira a tour of Voyager's and its security facilities; all of the crew are called back to the ship after Torres is arrested; Seven says that Voyager makes contact with alien species without sufficiently understanding their nature and that this often ends in conflict; Seven thinks that Voyager will increase its chances of survival if they maintain a direct course to Earth and avoid all extraneous contact with alien species.
