Screwing Around With the UltraHLE

for people who had the same trouble as me

This FAQ answers the biggest questions I had with the UltraHLE. It'll tell you what I did and why for the multitude of problems I had. The system can work, so enjoy it.

Author's note: There are no downloads or links to files mentioned in this document. This message board helped me out very much, and there just might be some links for you there. No guarantees.

Part I: Glide

  • Q: When I open up UltraHLE, it tells me that file glide2x.dll was not found.

A: You don't have Glide Drivers installed. You may not even have a card that supports Glide software. This program runs exclusively with Glide 3dFx. VooDoo 3D cards support this. (I bought a Creative Labs VooDoo Banshee -- $129.99 retail; works like a charm)

  • Q: Anything cheaper?

A: But of course. A generic VooDoo 1 card will do the job, but it won't be as pretty as the next best. (I still think that Banshee is the way to go if you have AGP; this is 16MB we're talking!)

  • Q: I heard of a program called Glide Wrapper that's supposed to emulate Glide technology; can I save myself a lot of money?

A: If you're going to try that, best of luck to you. If you find a way to make it work, hope that your current non-VooDoo 3D card can handle the program. Then, try your best not to be frustrated with the common symptoms like poor graphics, slow gameplay, and choppy sound.

    Part II: Running

  • Q: Okay -- the program is open, and when I load a game, it says "error loading."

A: Try it over and over again. If it doesn't load after the tenth time in a row, it's probably time to look for a different copy of the game.

  • Q: I load a game file, and nothing happens even though there's no indication of an error.

A: Make sure that after you load a file, you choose from the top bar Emulation -- Start.

  • Q: The game loads, but it's slow as all holy hell.

A: How fast is your processor? How much RAM do you have? Check these requirements:

    a) MINIMUM REQUIREMENT

    PII 233Mhz Processor
    32MB System RAM
Voodoo1 Based 3DFX Card (Glide Drivers Required)

    b) RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENT

    PII 300Mhz Processor
    64MB System RAM
Voodoo2/Banshee Based 3DFX Card (Glide Drivers Required)

    c) IDEAL REQUIREMENT

    PII 400Mhz Processor
    64MB System RAM
Voodoo2/Banshee Based 3DFX Card (Glide Drivers Required)

  • Q: Some games freeze my computer!

    A: Don't play those games.

    Part III: Controlling

  • Q: Playing an N64 with a keyboard blows!

A: Yes it does. Joysticks and gamepads work, though.

  • Q: I can't even reconfigure the keys!

A: Neither can I. It's not an option right now and won't be until the next version is dared to be released.

  • Q: The Left C button doesn't work!

A: It's not the key "j" like the config says; it's actually "f."

  • Q: (Sidewinder Question) How do I get my Sidewinder to work with UltraHLE?

A: Write down the controls for the keyboard, and make a profiler in the Sidewinder Profiler.

  • Q: (Sidewinder question) On my Sidewinder, some buttons are doubled up; like A + Z are together on one button!

A: First, download the newest profiler from Microsoft, then look for the file rgbjoy.zip (which has a readme) on the web, use these, restart, reprofile, and it should work.

    Part IV: Gaming

  • Q: I save games, but when I reload, the file isn't there...

A: Saving in the game isn't an option yet, but you can use the save state option by pressing ESC during a game, and choosing file, save state, and name your file. When you Load a game file, be sure to start the emulation, then load the save state file.

  • Q: Goldeneye freezes for no reason!

A: No reason other than you tried to arm a hand grenade as a weapon. It's a bad glitch, but luckily, hand grenades aren't crucial to completing the game. Just try to avoid picking them up.
