In the future, this section will cover many shows and movies done by Japanese companies. Due to the nature of my site, I will make a "kid friendly" section and a "13 and older" section.
Animation is considered a legitimate art form in Japan, and as such, it is not relegated to the status of being 'kid stuff' as in America. Not many adults take animation seriously, and most would never admit in public that they like it. In America, 'cartoons' are simply something you're supposed to grow out of. This is why Anime can be rather shocking to new viewers (Did that person actually get shot!?!? What's with all the blood?!?!). Just as with live action films, Anime can range from G rated all the way to XXX... (I DO NOT support the perverted (aka Hentai) shows, but I felt it important to note that they do exist, and newcomers should be careful when travelling to new Anime sites. Choosing Anime is just like choosing other videos- there are just some sections you may choose to not go. Just because 'adult' live action movies exist, it doesn't make all the other live action films bad!
With all that said, I should note that my taste in Anime ranges from G to PG-13, with the occasional R (I'm using American film ratings as a marker for comparison. Most Anime, since it is foreign, is not rated.) I will only cover the series I've seen.
Anime is beautiful. The lines are so crisp- the movement so fluid, and the detail is outstanding. They do so much with the smaller (compared to Disney features) budgets they are given. Anime has so many wonderful stories- they just happen to be animated. So, put aside any preconceived notions as to what animation is and who it's for. You may just discover a show that's a billion times better than any primetime TV show here in the U.S.
