Its been a while since I saw this, so I'm not sure of the bits I like. Plus as no one else has visited your site, I felt that you should get at least some sort of response. I am a huge Sean Connery fan, and was amazed and amused by this film, when I saw it (strapped for cash/drugs?? - its like listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!)

Flashing back on "fave" movies. This has got to be one of the best. Like a Legend. Cant understand anyone calling it "cheesey". Obviously very insecure person. Hate people who love to make fun. Do not like the version with a lot of scenes cut out. Just or ered the flick from local video shop.

Zardoz is uncommentable. It is mystic. You can never discourse on it. You can only feel it bruise your soul. Who understands will know what I am saying. But understanding is to be waited for. Thanks to our host, nevertheless, 'cuz he facilitates contact with it; whatever may still have obstructed him from transcending the border between life and thought, meaning and form. Coolest movie ever! Enjoyable sci-fi story that raises enough issues to set your head spinning. From the comments here, and some reviewers, it seems if it doesn't fall into a predictable sci-fi or other conventional plot, it is not understood, so these people make silly criticisms about clothing styles they dislike, or complain that the flying he d's method of propulsion is not explained to them, etc.

this film is the grandfather of the matrix, seriously. I mean, it may be acid instead of cybernetics, but its about a character who enters the "system" and turns it inside out through mental prowess(?). Whatever, it's strange and definately ahead of its t me. I think that Boorman synthesizes some of the mythological aspects into Excalibur to much better effect, though. peace

In terms of being genuine science fiction (and most so-called SF films are not), _Zardoz_ is second only to Stanley Kubrick's _2001: A Space Odyssey_. That this film has become so obscure is depressing and baffling--especially considering its director and its cast and that it was released in a decade known and celebrated for cinematic adventurism. I hope this film comes to DVD soon. And if this weren't such an anti-intellectual era, I'd hope for a theatrical reissue. But no ...

I'm a film major and lover of scifi/fantasy films and recently saw Zardoz for the first time. Beethovens 7th has long been one of my favorite pieces and recognized it instantly during the opening credits. The film was well done and raises more questions as to the future of mankind. Death is a part of life, growing old is precious and brings wisdom beyond intelligence, eternal youth is no answer nor is it a solution, nor rational to existence, the answers come in old age and beyond death.

I don't see why people knock this film - if you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen! I bought an 8-track tape (it *was* the 70's!) of Beethoven's 7th after seeing this film - great stuff! Never found out/forgotten what my ex-wife thought of it. Current spouse would get worked up about how stupid any SF story is, that's not real life/doesn't exist, etc (I feel better now!). Wasn't Blade Runner similar, in a way? I got here after a colleague's comment about ceramic heads (used in our parking equipment ticket readers). Really wild!

Least Favourite Character: still got to be may

Comments:
Well, I finally made it from start to finish in one sitting. Its hard to do it you know, it takes lots of substance abuse to watch this in the first place. Yes, the aging sceen at the close of the movie deserves to be considered one of the movie's strong points. Its even up there with the stone head spewing out guns, Zed killing his own god with a Webley-Fosbery (sorry I misspelled Fosbery earlier) and the slaughter of the imortals.

Trying to avoid the middle road of moderates and PC wimps I will stand amongst those who consider it a great film. True you can make the camp arguments and low-budget insults, but it is definately one of my most watched movies. And after all, Boorman is d cidedly in show business too. But then again one of my other favorite pieces of Borrman's work is Exorcist 2, which gets the usual scathing from critics (where do those people come from, oh yeah, thats been proven) Seriously the human failings it covers and other topics make Zardoz a unique and favorite viewing item, obviously not just for myself. If you wish to send your appropriate hate mail feel free. Since most of you need to dine on the sweat of a mobile creature I will be waiting on your apathetic replies

Well. I guess its one of my favorite films even though it has some problems it does make a few basic (pathetically basic) points. I LIKE the flying head, the silly diaper, and the STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL Webley-Forsby Revolver Zed gets to play with!

Favourite ZARDOZ Character: The cute girls in the little bolero tops!
Favourite Line: "THE GUN IS GOOD!" "The gun is Good!" "THE PENIS IS EVIL!" "The penis is Evil!" etc. Any line feturing the phrase "2nd level meditation."
Favourite Scene: The Brutals running wild and worshipping the Big Stone Head. Why is the Vortex so low-budget looking? No, I know the answer to that one.
Least Favourite Character: Most of the Vortesians.

Comments:
It's a good movie up until the last couple of scenes when they obviously lost the plot or just stopped trying. Americans would tend to dislike it more because it's not Hollywood, it's that British BBC-style, Gerry Anderson-esque intellectual thing, with l ts of theatrical actors. At least they were prepared to try something different!

Mark B. Magee - 05/16/98 02:15:40
Favourite ZARDOZ Character: Arthur Frane
Favourite Line: A tie between the classic "An old man calls... the voice of the turtle is heard on the land" and "It was I!" (combined with head flip)
Favourite Scene: Again, a tie. This time between the infamous vomiting guns, and Fren's breakdown at the dinner table.
Least Favourite Character: The topless women who is occassionally seen wandering through the woods. Mainly due to the fact that even after at least five viewing I still have yet to discern just what she has to do with the plot.

Least Favourite Character: the critics

Comments:
The citics hate the movie because, unlike the people in the vortex, they refuse to admit that they are mere human beings, not some god-like creatures!!!! Listen, I can take Bozo the Clown seriously if I want. It's a free world, isn't it?
