Well.. What have we here??
You came to learn more about that terrific movie Labyrinth-eh? This is just the basics, nothing more.. but if you were to rent the movie, get into it.. it will show you your dreams. But this is not an ordinary movie for an ordinary person. Do you want to see it?
Directed by: Jim Henson
Executive Producer: George Lucas
Conceptual Design by: Brian Froud
Screenplay by: Terry Jones
Starring: David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, Toby Froud
Creatures Preformed by: Shari Weiser, Brian Henson, Frank Oz, David Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Karen Prell, Ron Mueck, and Kevin Clash
This film is a children's fantasy film (the best in my opinion) in which the main cast members are muppet-puppets! Only five of the characters are human (Jareth, Sarah, Toby, and Sarah's stepmother and father). Even though this film is catagorized as a childrens film, it is enjoyed at all ages!
If you still insist on reading more about this movie instead of renting it and psychologically analysing it then read this great review by Alys!
Review:
The opening scene is captivating, introducing the fantasy of the Labyrinth as a play that Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) is obsessed with. Many of the lines she is practicing are repeated throughout the remainder of the film, which helps to tie it all together.
The writer keeps your interest in the movie through the use of suspense. For example, in the second or third scene, the audience is startled by the dramatic appearance of the main antagonist, Jareth the Goblin King. Played magnificently by David Bowie, the Goblin King uses his wiles to try to keep Sarah in the Labyrinth forever. Not to mention that he also wants to turn her little brother into a goblin.
There is also a lot of comedy in this film, thanks to some of the puppet characters, namely the crazy Chilly Downs. Hoggle, the main puppet character, makes some timely and hilarious remarks ("The Cleaners! The Bog of Stench! You SURE got his attention!").
I found the ending a bit predictable, but for what is virtually supposed to be a children's film, it is to be expected. Personally, my sympathies lie with the Goblin King, and even at 7 years of age, I remember being bitterly disappointed.
This type of movie is slowly drifting into oblivion, and few like it are made. I have found it to be a great film, and I haven't hesitated to watch it again and again. It is a film that can take you out of the real world, if only for a few hours. I would definitely recommend this film to all. I give it 4 1/2 stars out of five. (Rated PG)
As of now, Labyrinth is among the many Henson films in moratorium. This is a shame since it is one of the all-time best fantasy films made (I can't say it enough!). Other Labyrinth items out of print are most (if not all!) books/music associated with this movie.
The Goblins of Labyrinth by Brian Froud and Terry Jones. The Goblin Companion is a smaller version of this book (this one is still available as of Jan '98). For images of Froud's work click here.
