2 DAYS TO PSYCHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DECEMBER 1, 1998
That’s what director Gus Van Sant is saying, in part
because he is reported to be sick of hearing people call his
take on the Hitchcock’s classic "another lame Hollywood
remake."
Following up on the Cinescape interview, director Gus Van
Sant rationalized to Newsweek that his re-creation of the
Hitchcock classic is "an anti-remake film." Van Sant further
explained, "Why do people take films that are really well
done and change the dialogue and change the shots and
call it the same movie? I don't have much faith in
Hollywood's ability to do remakes. There's a remake curse."
Van Sant also touches on the general negative advance
reaction to his film saying, "I wasn't really aware that I had
crossed some bounds. Why are they asking why? For me
there are many, many reasons: the biggest reason of all is
that nobody's ever done it."
Meanwhile, in the San Francisco Chronicle, the director
defends his project saying, "There's nothing blasphemous or
incorrect about doing (the remake), because I'm not so sure
that outside our community of film obsessives, the public
really knows what it is." He adds, "People in their 30s just
aren't interested in seeing things that aren't in color."Thank's a lot, but really a lot to Cinescape

Universal has decided NOT to screen the upcoming
recreation of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (which the Insider
hears is not noticeably different from the original despite
Internet rumors to the contrary). There will be no premiere or
press previews. The Insider considers this a good move on
the part of Gus Van Sant and Company considering no one
from the studio has answered the "why" question. Plus,
can’t you just see die-hard Psycho fans picketing any
premiere…Thank's to Cinescape

Perhaps Gus Van Sant’s Psycho re-creation is a
shot-by-shot remake of the original classic film, but as
details leak out, it now appears that the director may be
making some subtle changes that may or may not affect the
film’s story. In particular, in an interview with Julianne Moore
in the current issue of Out magazine reveals that the
character she plays, Lila Crane, is gay. "Honestly," says the
actress, "nobody is gonna to care. It's not like it's such a big
deal. You're just talking about sexuality. It should be a
regular thing." Cinescape

E Online is reporting that Psycho posters that effectively
suggesting a woman behind a shower curtain that devolves
to bloody red at the graphic’s bottom are being pulled down
all over the Boston transit system subway tunnels and the
sides of buses. The reason? Other than perhaps rare good
taste, there were a number of complaints to the city about
the poster from at least twelve people. In addition, the state's
governor is pushing an anti-violence against women
campaign which would make the poster strictly taboo.
Steve Adams, the state's assistant treasurer, simply
commented that "It was creepy. I was troubled by it." Thank's to Cinescape
OCTOBER 24, 1998
In a recent interview for Mr. Showbiz, screenwriter Joseph Stephano has answered some
of the many rumours popping up about Gus Van Sant's remake of the Hitchcock classic. First, the
film won't be EXACTLY shot-for-shot, but almost all of it will be (as indicated by the scenes in the
full trailer). The Lila Crane (Julianne Moore) character will NOT have a lesbian undertone, rumours
of this were believed to be due to the hostility she shows toward Sam Loomis (Viggo Mortensen).
The new-look Mrs. Bates was only briefly mentioned, Stefano saying "I think Hitch's mother looks
kind of funny now, by today's standards". Finally the main rumour about a completely different
ending were likely to be false, meaning the famous 'twist' is likely to remain the same. Thanks to 'DarkHorizons'
& 'Apu'.
OCTOBER 20, 1998
It's more likely that the rumor for the Decmeber 9 release date is false, so it is going to be released on December 4.
OCTOBER 15, 1998
The many rumors that have been swirling around possible changes in Gus Van Sant’s "recreation" of Psycho appear to have
some foundation if a report in the Belfast News Letter is to be believed. The rumors have it that the new Psycho is virtually
identical up until the shower scene at which point everything goes in a new direction. "There’s stuff that changes," producer
Brian Grazer admits to the News Letter, "and it starts to become more significant around the shower scene."

Hold onto your kitchen knives folks as things are going to get exciting. In an official press
release on Friday, Universal Pictures announced that for the first time ever it will debut the full
theatrical trailer for "Psycho" on the Official Site, BEFORE it hits theatres. The trailer will be
available in a Streaming Video format (either VIVO or RealVideo) starting from Tuesday 9pm
US-EST. The next airing will be on the Thursday October 15th edition of "Entertainment Tonight",
followed by its debut in theatres on Friday October 16th. Thanks to DarkHorizons
OCTOBER 8, 1998
Unfortunately, for some reason the psycho release date was delayed for 5 days. The official release date is now December 9.
The New York Daily News is reporting rumors in Hollywood that have the producers of the Psycho remake taking away
director Gus Van Sant’s right to edit the film. Furthermore, there’s a rumor that producer Brian Grazer was disappointed by
the ending of the film. Surely he wasn’t surprised by a shot-for-shot remake, was he? Representatives for the director claim
that contrary to these stories, Van Sant has been cutting for the last two weeks.
SEPTEMBER 21, 1998
USA Today reports that producer Brian Grazer has announced that Gus Van Sant’s Psycho will not be screened in advance
for critics. Is this another case of The Avengers or Godzilla? Perhaps not. Grazer claims it's all part of the marketing for the
remake mimicking Hitchcock’s strategy plan for the original. Grazer says, "It was part of a pure theme that Gus was going
with... He's a kooky guy."
Sadly, it appears that Van Sant and Grazer haven’t watched Hitch’s film enough when Grazer reveals the minute changes made
from the original. Says Grazer, "The look of the mother has been changed. It's pretty gross! And the shower scene . . . is really
kind of grisly, even by today's standards." Didn’t they notice that Hitch made you think you saw more than actually you did in
the shower scene? I only hope that this is all just a smoke screen.
SEPTEMBER 14, 1998
Today’s Cybersleaze column quotes a Universal spokeswoman who refers to the studio’s Psycho recreation. "The production
is completely top secret and has been for a long time," the Diva reports. "There is a facade around the front of the house
[which the Insider reported in this space last month] so people cannot see what is going on up there." Top secret, eh? I guess
they’re afraid if people see the house during filming they might walk away with some juicy plot info? The ending perhaps?
Universal’s propaganda machine would be better served letting tourists see the famous structure, in the Insider’s opinion.
SEPTMBER 4, 1998
The cast of Psycho must be getting sick of answering questions about the upcoming remake. "I feel all movies are something to
be grasped and touched and smelled, not something to be venerated, like religious objects," reveals actor Vince Vaughn in an
interview with Indie magazine. "Obviously, Gus and I are fans of Psycho; we're simply trying to say, ‘Hey, this is a great film,
and we want to celebrate and explore it.’ If someone 20 years down the line wants to remake Swingers, I'll be flattered."
SEPTEMBER 2, 1998
Nothing really revelatory here, but early Insider reports of cost-overruns on the set of Babe 2 appear to be true if the Los
Angeles Times is to be believed. The porker sequel now boasts a price tag of more than $80 million according to the paper
which is more than triple that of the original. The Times also reveals that Meet Joe Black is topping $90 million while the Gus
Van Sant Psycho recreation is looking to cost around $25 million.
AUGUST 13, 1998
Vince Vaughn, during the same interview, claims that the new Psycho will employ a number of changes to update the story (as
the Insider reported in this space weeks ago) as well as "some things that we might be using from the original screenplay that
didn’t make it into the first film.
AUGUST 7, 1998
The infamous shower scene was re-filmed for the re-cast, re-creation of Psycho only two weeks ago according to a bit in the
Chicago Sun-Times by Cindy Pearlman. Anne Heche tells Pearlman that the scene took three days to film and was shot with
the actress wearing a body stocking. Also revealed was the fact that a new house has been built for the remake (oops, I mean
recreation) which -- as an aside -- caused Vince Vaughn to have a panic attack! "It was just so weird to walk up that hill and
see my 'mother' in the window," Vaughn says.
JULY 27, 1998
Universal has turned on the official Psycho website with the movie's first trailer (not much beyond a logo and some
voice-overs). Evidently the producers want to avoid any talk that their defacing of Hitchcock,s classic is a "remake" (perish the
thought), so both the site and the trailer stress that the new Psycho is a "recreation". While I'm not wild about the prospects of
this rema..., er, this recreation, I'm willing to give it a shot (especially after hearing Bernard Herrmann's classic shower scene
music in the trailer - thank God they didn't feel the need to "update" that as well). I just hope they address the "why?" question
before the hype begins ...
JULY 23, 1998
Author of the original Psycho script, Joseph
Stefano has been hired by Universal to 'polish and update' the
script. The new script will update the dialogue between Norman
Bates and his mother and the character of Sam (Viggo
Mortensen) is more open and more sexual than in the original
script. Other minor details such as the amount of money used to
make a call from a payphone will also be updated.
JULY 12, 1998
Robert Forster ("Jackie Brown") and Rita Wilson
("Jingle All the Way") have signed to play small roles in the
re-make of "Psycho." Forster plays the psychologist who
diagnoses Norman Bates' mental condition and Rita Wilson will
play Anne Heche's co-worker.
JUNE 23, 1998
Fargo's William Macy, who had previously been rumored in the role of detective Milton Arbogast in Gus Van Sant's remake
of Hitchcock's Psycho, has officially signed onto the film according to an Insider source. Expect an official announcement to be
forthcoming soon.
MAY 22, 1998
An Insider source confirms earlier speculation that Julianne Moore and Anne Heche will be officially announced in as the
female leads in Psycho along with Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates (which was confirmed yesterday).
MAY 21, 1998
Viggo Mortensen (The Prophecy and the upcoming A Perfect Murder) is in negotiations to play the character of Sam
Loomis for Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho, according to Variety columnist Michael Fleming. In the film's story, Loomis
aids Lila Crane (who will be played by Julianne Moore) in her search to find out what happened to her sister Marion Crane
(Anne Heche). Van Sant's film starts shooting later this month.
MAY 19, 1998
Vince Vaughn has accepted the role of Norman Bates in the upcoming remake of the Hitchcock classic. Vaughn was the
original choice of director Gus Van Sant to portray Bates and is the first primary cast member to officially sign on.
MAY 7, 1998
Rumours indicate that Julianne Moore ("Boogie
Nights") and Anne Heche ("Volcano") have committed to co-star
in the picture for director Gus Van Zant, who will begin shooting
this summer. Heche will supposedly take on the role made
famous by Janet Leigh and which earlier had been offered to
Nicole Kidman, who passed because of scheduling issues.
Moore is understood to be playing Heche's sister.
MAY 4, 1998
Following up on last week's report that a "wish list" of actors were being considered for the upcoming remake of Psycho,
Nicole Kidman is talking with director Gus Van Sant, according to England's The Sun newspaper.
APRIL 30, 1998
Variety's Michael Fleming reports today that Brian Grazer and Gus Van Sant, hoping to get their cameras rolling on the
Psycho remake this summer, are spying a list of top talent to bring the Hitchcock classic back to life. Without getting into the
question of why the filmmakers feel compelled to try to top the original this new report cites a wish list that includes Vince
Vaughn as Norman Bates, Nicole Kidman in the Janet Leigh role, Julianne Moore as her sister and William Macy as the
investigator who uncovers Bates' secret.
APRIL 2, 1998
Though Brian Garzer's Psycho remake has yet to announce a single cast member with a quickly looming start date, gossip
columnist Liz Smith reports that Drew Barrymore is interested in taking part. Barrymore, in a recent Australian interview,
expressed interest in playing the Marion Crane role (originally played by Janet Leigh). For those who haven't seen the original
film (because it was in yucky black and white), Marion Crane comes to a sad end in a shower at the Bates Motel.
APRIL 1, 1998
Gus Van Sant, fresh from his Oscar-nominated turn as director of Good Will Hunting, has set his sights on the most classic of
all horror films, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Van Sant is teaming with producer Brian Grazer to re-make Psycho,
using the original script but updating the setting and casting what the trade calls "young, hip actors." The movie will be put on a
fast- track and could be in the can within three months, according to the paper.
