'Boys Don't Cry' is an extremely important drama about finding yourself and your sexuality. Based on a true story, director Peirce handles the delicate subject with every care, ensuring that 'Boys Don't Cry' is a touching, heartfelt and riveting piece of film-making.
Brandon Teena (delivered by Swank with an Oscar winning performance) is a trans-gender girl, who prefers life as a boy. After cutting off her hair, and adapting her apppearance to that of a males (quite convincingly, it must be stated) he is forced to go on the run due to police trouble and disgruntled towns-people. He finds himself amidst a group of trailer-trash youth where he finds temporary contentment when he falls in love with a local girl (also a wonderful performance from Sevigny). Of course, Brandon's unusual situation leads him to problems that stand in the way of his happiness.
Having watched 'Boys Don't Cry' I felt moved, confused, happy yet very sad. The fantastic performances throughout, set against the downbeat, almost haunting country soundtrack works towards creating one of the most compelling and memorable films of recent years.
