The Exorcist, possibly one of the world's most controversial films, is a tale of terror. The film, made in 1973, has already celebrated its 25th anniversary, and although readers in the UK may not have seen it as it was banned from video for many years, the BBFC has now passed it and a video release is inevitable. Linda Blair puts in a superb performance as Regan and Ellen Burstyn and Jason Miller back her up with equally effective performances.
Regan is a sweet, loving 12 year old girl living with her mother. When she becomes inhabitated by a 'malevolent entity' claiming to be the devil himself she is trapped inside her body with no knowledge or recolection of what she, or he, is doing. Their last chance is to find an exorcist.
The Exorcist is a gripping film, perhaps a little disappointing having heard so much hype about it. After hearing so much about the film, I was expecting it to be scary. I didn't find the film to be scary by today's standards, just a little unsettling. By no means am I saying the film is bad, as this is far from the truth. The acting is strong, as is the story. In its day I am able to understand why the film was banned from video, but I see no reason why it should be today, and the BBFC must have seen this also.
