The Matrix, bravely released shortly before Lucas' Phantom Menace, is a film that may well out-do the Star Wars prequel in quality of entertainment - and this is from a Star Wars fan!! The effects used for The Matrix were so stunning that after seeing a short sequence, distributers Warner Brothers increased the effects budget to put more of the spectacular, first-of-their-kind effects in. Keanu Reeves looks great in his role as Neo, shaking off any previous doubts caused by 1994 failure Johnny Mnemonic. Carrie-Anne Moss was also suitably slick for her role as Trinity, but for me the star of the show was acclaimed actor, Laurence Fishburne for his portrayal of Morpheus.
Neo, a respectable worker for a computer company by day, and a hacker by night, is driven to question the world around him when confronted by feelings and dreams leaving him with the word 'Matrix' ringing around his head. But what is the dream and what is reality? As the plot unravels rapidly, he discovers the world around him to simply be a virtual reality, or a 'Matrix' created by computers of the dystopian society of the future.
Highly psychological, The Matrix will leave you questioning the concept of reality for days or even weeks afterwards. The mind-blowing effects should dazzle you in a way that no film has ever previous to this. Never before have such advanced technologies been displayed on screen and you'll find yourself amazed at just what we're capable of and how much we have advanced in the past few years. Stylishly filmed, well acted and directed with a classy script, The Matrix is a huge triumph for the writer-directors, the Wachowski brothers.
