Three series of the programme were made and broadcast in Britain between 1995 - 1997, and in many other countries, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The series stars Robert Carlyle as the eponymous hero, who prefers the life of the remote village of Lochdubh to city dwelling. As Series one begins, this decision has cost Hamish his relationship with Alex, a promising writer, who wants to live in the city, and is forced to leave Hamish behind.
Hamish lives alone and happy in the local police station, with his beloved west highland terrier Wee Jock. He is not adverse to the odd bit of poaching, and smokes dope freely. He is aided by TV John McIver, an imposing man in his late 50s, who has the gift of second sight.
Although Hamish appears not to have noticed, Isobel Sutherland, the local reporter, has a powerful crush on him, and casts longing looks in his direction.
