Disney's Sleeping beauty stays pretty close to the original Charles Perrault Fairy Tale, but it has a few additions. For example there are a few more fairies than there were in the original.
The Story
The story begins with a king and queen who long for a baby. Finally they have a daughter
and named her Aurora. To celebrate the birth, all of the people in the kingdom come to the royal
castle, bearing gifts for the princess.Aurora is betrothed to the son of a neighbouring King(hubert) called Phillip.
Also attending are the three good fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. Flora gives her the gift of beauty. Fauna gives the gift of song, but before Merryweather can bestow her gift, the evil fairy Maleficent appears.
Maleficent is angry and curses the baby Aurora...." On her sixteenth birthday, the princess will prick her finger on
the spindle of a spinning wheel and die". Merryweather lessens this curse with her gift, changing the curse of death into one of sleep.
All of the spinning wheels of the kingdom are burnt and the baby Princess is taken into the woods to be raised by the three good fairies. Thus the kingdom settles into harmony once more and all of the people wait patiently for Aurora's 16 birthday to pass so that she can once again live amongst them and be their princess.
Sixteen years pass, during which time Aurora has been raised as the peasant girl Briar Rose.Maleficent's henchmen have been searching for her for 16 years, and Maleficent sends her raven to search for the girl.
Briar Rose, meanwhile, is tired of living only with her
"aunts" and dreams of living in the castle she can see from the woods. She sings and the
woodland creatures come out to listen to her beautiful voice. Her voice is also heard by a passing
rider dressed in fine clothes. Phillip watches Aurora singing. Astonished, Briar Rose almost runs away but, the sight of
her first stranger stops her. They (in true Disney style) fall in love whilst dancing. When the stranger asks her name, Briar Rose runs away, but at his plea, she tells him to meet her that evening at the cottage. Neither of them are aware of the other's identity.
Meanwhile back at the house, the three fairies are having a magical argument and the fairy dust they are using, alerts Maleficent's raven who spies on the cottage.
Briar Rose is happy and excited about being in love with the man in the woods. The Fairies feel pity for her love of the unknown stranger, and tell her the truth of her birth....... She is the Princess Aurora and betrothed already to Prince Phillip. Aurora begins to cry and runs to her room.
Meanwhile back at the castle everyone is preparing for the return of the princess. Pillip rides in and declares his love for the peasant girl in the woods. His father, King Hubert is furious, but is tricked into allowing Phillip to marry the girl that he loves. He rides off to meet her at the cottage.
However, Princess Aurora has been escorted by the fairies to her father's castle in secret.Once in her bedroom, she breaks down in tears over her lost love and the fairies decide to let her have a few minutes alone.
A glowing ball appears before Aurora. Mesmerized, Aurora gets up and blankly begins to follow the ball through a secret passage to the highest tower in the castle. There the ball stops and turns into a spinning wheel and Aurora pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep.
Sunset has arrived and all the castle eagerly awaits the entrance of the Princess Aurora. Meanwhile the fairies have put Aurora on a bed in the tower, and in an attempt to save the grief of her parents, the fairies cast a spell to put the entire castle to sleep until such time as the Princess awakes.
Before Hubert sleeps one of the fairies overhears him telling the story of Phillip falling in love with the peasant girl in the woods. They realise that Phillip could break Aurora's sleeping spell with love's first kiss.
The fairies hurry back to their house but are too late as Phillip has been taken prisoner by the evil Maleficent and her henchmen.
The fairies go to Maleficent's castle and sneak in.
Maleficent then goes to the dungeon to torment Phillip. Phillip
tries to attack Maleficent but is securely chained. She then laughs and goes away to bed. The
fairies, burst in the room after she leaves, and break the chains. They then arm Phillip with the Shield
of Virtue and the Sword of Truth and help him break out of his cell.
Enraged, Maleficent uses her magic to make a forest of thorns surround Stefan's castle. But the
Sword of Truth is able to cut through them. Now really mad, Maleficent turns herself into a dragon
and confronts Phillip.
Phillip's horse gets scared and bolts. Phillip himself is driven back by
Maleficent to a ledge. With the help of the fairies magic he stabs the dragon through the heart.
The fairies lead Phillip through the sleeping castle to Aurora. There he kneels next to the bed and
gently kisses Aurora. She awakes in a start to see her true love.
The movie ends with the two dancing and living happily ever after.
