Tall and dark-haired and attractive in a puppyish way, Azaria began his career in California as a stand-up comedian before appearing in stage productions and small roles on TV. His onscreen breakthrough came when he was cast as the smarmy best friend in the Fox sitcom Herman's Head (1991-94). On the big screen, he was briefly seen as a detective in both Pretty Woman (1990) and Heat (1995) and was effective as an amoral executive who coached game show contestant Ralph Fiennes in Quiz Show (1994). Azaria received critical praise for his hilarious turn as a the housekeeper to Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in Mike Nichols' The Birdcage (1996).
