At the Beginning
We were strangers, starting out on a journey
Never dreaming, what we'd have to go through
Now here we are, I'm suddenly standing
At the beginning with you

No one told me I was going to find you
Unexpected, what you did to my heart
When I lost hope, you were there to remind me
This is the start

Chorus
And life is a road that I wanna keep going
Love is a river, I wanna keep flowing
Life is a road, now and forever, wonderful journey
I'll be there when the world stops turning
I'll be there when the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you

We were strangers, on a crazy adventure
Never dreaming, how our dreams would come true
Now here we stand, unafraid of the future
At the beginning with you

Back to Chorus
Knew there was somebody, somewhere
A new love in the dark
Now I know my dream will live on
I've been waiting so long
Nothing's gonna tear us apart

Back to Chorus
In the end I want to be standing
At the beginning with you...

"A RUMOUR IN ST. PETERSBURG"

Male Factory Worker: St. Petersburg is gloomy.
Female Factory Worker: St. Petersburg is bleak.
Another Male FW: My underwear got frozen standing here
 all week.
All workers: Oh, since the revolution
Our lives have been so gray.
              Thank goodness for the gossip
That gets us through the day.
 Townspeople: Hey!
              Have you heard?
There's a rumour in St. Petersburg.
              Have you heard
What they're saying on the street?
Newspaper vendor: Although the Czar did not survive,
One daughter may be still alive.
 All: The Princess Anastasia!
Vendor: But please do not repeat!
 All: It's a rumour
      A legend,
      A mystery.
Something whispered in an alleyway or through a
 crack!
      It's a rumour
      That's part of
      Our history!
Fortuneteller: They say her royal grandmama will pay
 a royal sum.
All: To someone who can bring
      The princess back!
Black marketeer: A ruble for this painting.
                  It's Romanov, I swear!
Female black marketeer: Count Yusopov's pajamas!
                         Comrades, buy the pair
Another black marketter: I got these from the palace
                          It's lined with real fur.
Dmitri, BM: It could be worth a fortune
             If it belonged to her!
 (dialogue--Dmitri and Vlad)
 Dmitri: It's the rumour
         The legend
         The mystery.
It's the Princess Anastasia who will
         Help us fly!
         You and I, friend
         Will go down
         In history!
We'll find a girl to play the part and teach
 her what to say
Dress her up and take her to Paris.
Imagine the reward her dear old grandmama
         will pay
Who else could pull it off but you and me?
         We'll be rich!
 Vlad: We'll be rich!
 Dmitri: We'll be out!
 Vlad: We'll be out!
Both: And St. Petersburg will have some more to talk
 about!
 Townspeople: Ssh!
              Have you heard?
There's a rumour in St. Petersburg
              Have you heard
What they're saying on the street?
      (shout) Hey!
      (shout) Hey!
      (shout) Hey!
              Have you heard?
There's a rumour in St. Petersburg.
              Have you heard?
              Comrades, what do you suppose?
              A fascinating mystery.
Dmitri: The biggest con in history!
 Townspeople: The Princess Anastasia!
              Alive or dead?
 Window washer: Who knows?
                Ssh!

"JOURNEY TO THE PAST"

Listen to the midi

Anya: Heart, don't fail me now.
       Courage, don't desert me.
       Don't turn back
       Now that we're here.
       People always say
       Life is full of choices.
       No one ever mentions
       Fear.
Or how the world can seem so vast
       On a journey
       To the past.
       Somewhere down this road
       I know someone's waiting.
       Years of dreams
       Just can't be wrong.
       Arms will open wide.
       I'll be safe and wanted.
       Finally home where I belong.
Well, starting now, I'm learning fast!
       On this journey
       To the past.
       Home,
       Love,
       Family.
There was once a time I must have had
       them too.
       Home,
       Love,
       Family.
I will never be complete until I find you.
       One step at a time.
       One hope, then another.
Who knows where this road may go?
       Back to who I was,
       On to find my future.
       Things my heart
       Still needs to know.
Yes! Let this be a sign!
       Let this road be mine!
Let it lead me to my past.
       And bring me home
       At last!

"ONCE UPON A DECEMBER"

 Anya: Dancing bears,
       Painted wings,
       Things I almost remember,
       And a song
       Someone sings
       Once upon a December.
Someone holds me safe and warm
Horses prance through a silver storm.
       Figures dancing gracefully
       Across my memory.
 (choral section)
Someone holds me safe and warm.
Horses prance through a silver storm.
       Figures dancing gracefully
       Across my memory.
       Far away,
       Long ago,
       Glowing dim as an ember.
       Things my heart
       Used to know.
       Things it yearns to remember.
       And a song
       Someone sings
       Once upon a December.

"IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT"

Rasputin: In the dark of the night I was
           tossing and turning.
And the nightmare I had was as
           bad as can be.
It scared me out of my wits.
           A corpse falling to bits!
Then I opened my eyes and the
           nightmare was me!
I was once the most mystical man
           in all Russia.
When the royals betrayed me, they
           made a mistake!
My curse made each of them pay.
But one little girl got away.
           Little Anya beware, Rasputin's awake!
Bugs: In the dark of the night, evil will
       find her!
In the dark of the night, just before
       dawn.
 Rasputin: Revenge will be sweet.
All: When the curse is complete.
Bugs: In the dark of the night,
 Rasputin: She'll be *gone!*
I can feel that my powers are slowly
           returning.
Tie my sash and a dash of cologne
           for that smell.
As the pieces fall into place,
I'll see her crawl into place.
           Das vidanya, Anya, Your Grace
           Farewell!
Bugs: In the dark of the night, terror will
       strike her!
 Rasputin: (spoken) Terror's the *least*
       I can do!
Bugs: In the dark of the night, evil will brew.
 All: Soon she will feel
      That her nightmares are real!
Bugs: In the dark of the night,
 Rasputin: She'll be through!
Bugs: In the dark of the night evil will
       find her! (Find her)
In the dark of the night terror
       comes true! (Doom her)
Rasputin: My dear, here's a sign.
It's the end of the line!
Bugs: In the dark of the night.
In the dark of the night.
 Rasputin: Come, my minions
           Rise for your master
           Let your evil shine.
Bugs: In the dark of the night,
In the dark of the night.
 Rasputin: Find her now, yes,
           Fly ever faster.
Bugs: In the dark of the night,
In the dark of the night,
In the dark of the night,
 Rasputin: SHE'LL BE MINE!

"LEARN TO DO IT"

Vlad: You were born in a palace by the sea.
Anya: A palace by the sea?
       Could it be?
 Vlad: Yes, that's right.
You rode horseback when you were only three.
 Anya: Horseback riding? Me?
 Vlad: And the horse...
 Dmitri: He was white.
Vlad: You made faces and terrorized the cook.
Dmitri: Threw him in the brook.
 Anya: Was I wild?
 Dmitri: Wrote the book.
Vlad: But you'd behave when your father gave
 that look.
 Dmitri: Imagine how it was.
 Vlad: Your long-forgotten past.
Both: We've lots and lots to teach you and
 the time is going fast.
 Anya: (spoken) Alright, I'm ready.
Vlad: Now, shoulders back and stand up tall.
Dmitri: And do not walk, but try to float.
Anya: I feel a little foolish
       Am I floating?
 Vlad: Like a little boat!
 Dmitri: You give a bow.
 Anya: What happens now?
Vlad: Your hand recieves a kiss.
Vlad, Dmitri: Most of all, remember this.
Vlad: If I can learn to do it,
You can learn to do it.
Dmitri: Something in you knows it.
 Both: There's nothing to it.
 Vlad: Follow in my footsteps
       Shoe by shoe.
Both: You can learn to do it too!
Vlad: Now, elbows in and sit up straight.
Dmitri: And never slurp your stroganoff.
Anya: (airily) I never cared for stroganoff.
Vlad: She said that like a Romanov!
 Dmitri: The samovar!
 Vlad: The caviar!
Anya: Dessert and then good night?
Dmitri, Vlad: Not until you get this right!
Vlad: If I can learn to do it,
Dmitri: (echo) If he can learn to do it
Vlad: You can learn to do it.
Dmitri: (echo) You can learn to do it.
 Vlad: Pull yourself together.
Both: And you'll pull through it.
 Vlad: Tell yourself it's easy.
 Both: And it's true,
You can learn to do it too!
Vlad: (spoken) Next, we memorize the names
       of the royalty.
       Now, here we have Kropotkin.
 Dmitri: Shot Potemkin.
 Vlad: In the Botkin.
       And dear old Uncle Vanya
       Loved his vodka.
 Dmitri: Got it, Anya?
 Vlad: The Baron Porshkin.
 Anya: He was...?
 Dmitri: Short.
 Vlad: Count Anatoly!
 Anya: Had a--?
 Dmitri: Wart.
 Vlad: Count Sergei
 Dmitri: Wore a feathered hat.
Vlad: I hear he's gotten very fat.
Anya: And I recall his yellow cat!
 (cutoff)
Vlad: I don't believe we told her that.
Anya: If you can learn to do it,
I can learn to do it.
Vlad: Don't know how you knew it.
 Anya: I simply knew it!
       Suddenly I feel like
       Someone new.
Vlad, Dmitri: Anya, you're a dream come true!
If I can learn to do it,
Anya: (echo) If you can learn to do it,
Vlad, Dmitri: You can learn to do it.
Anya: (echo) I can learn to do it.
 Vlad: Pull yourself together,
All: And you'll pull through it.
 Vlad: Tell yourself it's easy.
 All: And it's true.
You can learn to do it...
 Anya: Nothing to it!
All: You can learn to do
      It
      Too!

 "LEARN TO DO IT"-Reprise

 Vlad: It's one, two, three
       And suddenly
I see it at a glance.
       She's radiant
       And confident
And born to take this chance.
       I taught her well,
       I planned it all,
       I just forgot
       Romance.
Vlad, how could you do this?
How will we get through this?
I never should have let them
       Dance.
