The Race
After receiving a horse as a gift from Snowbird, Michaela is eager to ride in a big horse race, but is refused entry on the grounds that she is a woman. Brian enters a baking contest.
Sanctuary
Dorothy, Loren's sister-in-law, escapes from her abusive husband and finds a sensitive advocate in Michaela. However, when Dorothy's husband is found dead, she must stand trial for murder, as Michaela tries to prove her innocence.
Halloween
Michaela is troubled with memories of Abigail, Sully's former wife, while Sully is troubled and angry when she refuses to allow him to improve the homestead. A "dead" man keeps popping up all over town.
The Incident
Sully and Michaela search for the truth about a hunting accident involving Jake and the death of a Cheyenne brave that has caused tension between the town and Indians who are seeking justice.
Saving Souls
Kid Cole meets a spirited faith healer, Sister Ruth, who gets a cold reception from Michaela. Meanwhile, Grace and Robert E. plan to marry, but they encounter prejudice when they wish to use the town’s church for the ceremony.
Where the Heart Is
After receiving word that her mother is ill, Michaela travels to Boston with the children. When Sully has some recurring dreams about the city he follows her. There he learns that Mrs. Quinn's doctor is interested in Michaela, and that she may be interested in him as well.
Giving Thanks
After returning from Boston, Michaela and Sully try to develop their relationship by searching for common ground, but after a few disagreement they begin to wonder if they have enough in common to continue their relationship. Thanksgiving goodwill dries up in the drought stricken town.
Best Friends
Dorothy shows symptoms of menopause with complications. The first blush of romance is on the cheek of Colleen, who's smitten with a boy who is also liked by her best friend. As the "Sweetheart's Dance" approaches, Michaela suspects that Sully and Dorothy are having an affair.
Sully's Choice
While Michaela is away treating an influenza outbreak in another town, Sully, who had agreed to watch over the children and the homestead, winds up with a bullet in his back and a bounty on his head after trying to quell violence between renegade Indians and the Cavalry.
A Christmas Tale - Dr. Mike's Dream
It's Christmas Eve and as Michaela tends to a pregnant young woman during a long labour, the ghost of Charlotte appears and escorts her on a tour of her Christmases past, present, and future.
Crossing the Line
In need of more money to continue building his homestead, Matthew decides to cross the picket line of miners striking over unsafe working conditions. Disaster strikes though when the mine suffers a cave-in in which Sully and Michaela have to struggle to rescue him.
The Offering
Michaela is in the middle of a medical and emotional crisis when blankets she encourages the Cheyenne to accept from the army prove to have been infected with typhus. Colleen must fight to save Matthew’s life in the absence of Dr. Mike when he is infected with the typhus too.
The Circus
The circus comes to town in the form of a whimsical woman and her adopted daughter who invite the townsfolk to show off their talents.
Another Woman
A white woman who was raised by Indians finds a kindred spirit in Sully, but Brian is disturbed when he sees them kissing. Meanwhile, Loren is dispirited over Dorothy's sudden attraction to Jake.
The Orphan Train
Michaela works closely with several orphans who come to town, leaving Brian, Colleen, Matthew, and Sully feeling neglected, especially after she receives an offer of marriage from the reverend. Meanwhile, Myra's concerned when Hank has a "business" proposition for one of the orphaned girls.
The Buffalo Soldiers
Michaela makes room at the clinic for some Buffalo soldiers before learning that they were involved in an Indian massacre. But close quarters prove advantageous when Cloud Dancing asks her and Sully to spy on the men.
Luck of the Draw
Matthew needs money and bets he can get it by learning high-stakes poker from a card sharp. Meanwhile, Brian is upset with Loren for keeping an eagle in a cage in the store.
Life and Death
Dorothy is happy to welcome home her war-hero son but his ongoing battle with morphine addiction leads to a violent incident involving Michaela and the children.
The First Circle
Racial hatred flares up and the KKK comes calling when Robert E. and Grace buy a home in town.
Just One Lullaby
Reverend Johnson's in love with the town's new schoolteacher, but Michaela is concerned about the woman's wanton use of corporal punishment in the classroom.
The Abduction
Michaela's refusal to cover up an attack on an Army detachment by Cheyenne dog soldiers brings the wrath of the renegades down on the town. When the renegades kidnap her, Sully races against time to save her and to free the Cheyenne hostages General Custer threatens to hang if she is not returned. Brian works for Hank in order to buy a horse from him that he has been abusing.
The Campaign
Michaela runs against Jake for mayor and the election becomes a referendum on women's rights. Myra finally stands up to Hank.
The Man in The Moon
After Myra decides to leave the business, Hank is injured in a violent tirade. But when Hank lapses into a coma, Myra is the only one who seems to care.
Return Engagement
Sully and Michaela get engaged, but then she is surprised when her former fiance David, who she believed had died in the war, returns and wants her back.
