What's left of the Summer of 1998? Frankly, I've never been a big fan of mindless special effects extravaganzas because they mostly tend to be forgettable or badly made fluff. With this caveat, I do spy two possibly interesting films coming up in the later part of this season.
On July 24th, "Saving Private Ryan" opens. However, on the same day, "Disturbing Behavior" opens as well.
Check out the poster for this film - isn't it gorgeous? Notice the homogeneous blue eyes of the cast members featured. And yes, that IS Nick Stahl who was in "The Man Without a Face" with Mel Gibson about two million years ago. The premise of the film - Stepford Children - is intriguing, but I'm banking on Scott Rosenberg's script and David Nutter's direction (he did episodes of "ER", "The X-Files" and "Millenium") to kick off the Summer horror-fest, which will also see the release of the much anticipated "H20: Halloween" and "Vampires". By the way, can someone please explain to me why Michael Myers has such a grudge against Laurie Strode that he spent two movies stalking her? I've never been able to figure that out, and I've been assured there is a good reason for this, so anyone who knows, please send information this way. Thanks.
Now, for something completely different: "The Avengers". The trailer for this film is awesome, no? Droll, witty and so very amusing, I've unfortunately heard some pretty negative reviews of it. No matter. Any film about "saving the world in style" has got to be fab. And who can resist Uma hitting bad guys, Ralph looking all winsome and charming and Sean glowering as only he can - every interest group is catered for! I just hope that this film gets a fair chance because it does seem like it is extremely good fun.
Till the end of summer then! Enjoy the sun :)
