Ilonka Tolnay (Deanna Durbin) is a young goatherd living in old Austria-Hungary and working as an assistant at a bakery.  She travels to Vienna on a hay wagon and soon falls in love with Harry Marten (Robert Cummings), a handsome army corporal who wishes to become a great composer.  She inspires him to write waltzes.
