Paul Rauch, executive producer of ABC's One Life to Live is responsible for not only what's possibly the best-produced, most-outrageous soap segment - last year's "Daisy Awards," but also the most imaginative use of locales both metaphysical (Viki's out-of-body experience in heaven) and international. He's taken OLTL to the canals of Venice, the beaches of Jamaica and the pampas of Argentina and, this week, viewers witness the wrap-up of a storyline taped in Salzburg, Austria. The shoot required a cast and crew of 120 and backdrops that included the castle used in "The Sound of Music" and the biggest jet-powered snow-maker on the European continent - thanks to five days of sunshine. "Soap backdrops have come a long way," concedes Rauch, who began his daytime career in the '50s as a stage manager. "Back then, our sets were often just black velour - so we'd stick in a chandelier to distract the audience." 1
