Gold Digger
by Michael Logan

In an adventure worthy of Indiana Jones, Elaine Princi is goin' for gold. The soap queen - Dorian Callison on ABC's One Life To Live - and her beau, Dr. Howard Bellin, think they've located part of the lost Incan treasures. For those rusty in history, the Inca kingdom was conquered in the 1500s by Francisco Pizarro of Spain who promised to spare its ruler, Atahulpa, in exchange for gold and silver. After collecting a king's ransom, Pizarro killed Atahulpa anyway. As legend has it, when one group of Incans in the midst of carrying the riches for the ransom learned Pizarro had welshed on the deal, they hid their loot from the Spaniards. Supposedly, this treasure still lies about 13,000 feet high in the mountains of Ecuador. Princi and company, who took a trip to the region last summer, targeted their site after studying new, unpublished maps and securing aerial photos of the region. The return expedition (later this year) is being funded by philanthropist Bruce Heafitz, who bankrolled a 1987 discovery in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. "This is no cutesy trip," says Princi, who will produce a TV documentary on the trek. "The area is accessible only by helicopter. You're up to your knees in mud and whack your way around with a machete. I have lists of people who died looking for the gold. Others were lost, some returned home and committed suicide. The stories are very strange." 1
