Layers
Layering is a feature of a DVD disc that is very technically impressive.
Most DVD titles available to date, do not use this feature due to the fact that most movies
fit just fine onto a single layer of a DVD disc, which can hold 133 minutes of required
audio, video, and other information.
How layered DVD discs are made is by taking a single layer, covering it with a semi-transparent
gold film, and then adding another single DVD layer. This type of disc is read by a special
laser on all DVD players which is able to focus through the top layer, the thin gold film, and
read the bottom layer.
Often due to the fact that the layer has to read through the top & gold layer, not as much
information is stored on this layer. These discs can also be recognized by the gold colour
of the disc versus the silver colour of a single layered disc.
In the DVD industry, a single layered - single sided disc is referred to as a DVD 5,
a single sided - dual layered disc as a DVD 9,
a double sided - single layered disc as a DVD 10
and a double sided - dual layered disc as a DVD 18.
