Your door to the world of DVD ... where we don't talk over your head.
Televisions
Right in front of you more than likely is a monitor with the standard 4:3 aspect ratio.
This size of television/monitor has become a standard fixture in millions of homes around
the world. This size is also refered to as "1.33" (4 divided by 3).
The problem with watching movies on this type of television is that movies are generally filmed
much wider.*
16:9 Televisions also refered to as "1.78", are nearly 50% wider than the
standard TV and fully supported by DVD players. Although this helps to narrow the gap
between the width of your TV and the original film width, some movies are filmed nearly 100%
wider than the standard 1.33 TV. This means that even though much closer to the original
film width, the movie must still be watched in Full Frame Pan & Scan or
Letterbox.*
In short, the purchase of a 1.78 Widescreen TV, although falling short a bit on the
perfect width, will heighten your DVD movie watching experience drastically.
Also to note: The type of TV should be chosen in the setup menu on the
DVD player.
