A Bug's Life
Being small and unnoticed is just part of "A Bug's Life," but when Disney and Pixar team up,
being a bug means big screen, big stars, big fun and big adventure.
A fabulous cast of voices including such names as Dave Foley, Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus,
Phyllis Diller and Denis Leary just add grandeur of this wonderful movie. Along with
outstanding 3D computer animation, the movie reaches new heights in the world of animation.
Four years since their last adventure "Toy Story," Pixar and Disney give us a glimpse at how
much the technology has grown, and how a whole new generation is growing up to a new world of
animation.
In short, the movie tells of a colony of ants oppressed by a band of grasshoppers demanding food
every season. One ant however, who is the source of many of the colony's problems comes up
with a solution to go in search of bigger bugs to fight off these unwanted pests. In hopes of
ridding themselves of this pesky little critter, they send him off to search out help. To
their surprise though, he returns with a troop of warrior bugs to defend the colony, bringing
hope where once lost. Unfortunately, from a great misunderstanding, a secret arrises that one
ant in particular would like very much to keep very much under wraps... they're actually
circus bugs.
On DVD, the presentation of Bug's Life is like nothing seen up to this point. As most movies
DVDs are mastered from film to digital format, Bug's Life had the advantage of originally being
in a digital format being created on computers. With this in mind, the digital format of DVD
allowed for the movie to skip the film format, going directly from computer to DVD, the result
being a picture perfect quality that is absolutely breathtaking and not to be missed.
Another technical breakthrough for Bug's Life introduced with its transfer to home video that
set it apart from other movies was that of reframing. What this entails, is allowing the movie
to be reshaped from the original theatrical widescreen format to the shape of your television
with no loss of action or characters as is done with most movies. How Pixar accomplished this
was by using several processes of adding either to the height of the frame, or by moving
characters closer together so than none would be lost when the sides of the frame were
cropped.
In all, the collector's edition of Bug's Life comes together with not only a wonderful movie,
but a spectacular display of brilliant picture quality and an outstanding assortment of extras
that make this a must have DVD for any collection.
The movie disc is single sided - dual layered and contains the original widescreen version of
the movie as well as the full frame reframed version. The mastering is outstanding, as are the
abundant extras found on the second single sided - single layered extras disc.
