Enemy at the Gates
Based upon actual events during the German and Soviet confrontation at Stalingrad in the early
1940's, "Enemy at the Gates" proves itself as a superb film of the second world war well
worth the watch. Featuring the magnificent performances of Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes,
Rachel Weisz and Ed Harris, the brilliant writing and directing comes alive, letting us live
right among the horrors and triumphs of war.
Telling the story of Vassili Zaitsev (Law) and his rise to fame as a deadly marksman, we see how
this fame quickly shows its ugly face, as the stories written by a fellow comrade Danilov
(Fiennes), soon has the Germans bringing in their best sniper Major Konig (Harris). Now on a
mission to finish off this wartime hero, Konig cautiously sets in motion his plan of attack,
while Zaitsev learning of his new adversary, comes to grips with the fact he may have finally
met his match.
A truly eye opening piece of film-making, from acting and action, sets and effects to writing
and direction, it is something you should surly see. My only slight disappointment with the
film was although some quite acceptable and obvious artistic license was taken with the
Russians and Germans both speaking perfect English, it would have been nice to have heard at
least a bit of an accent.
