Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Without a doubt a film that showcases the next generation in full length 3D animated features,
"Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" is a true highlight of the genre that years from now
may be looked back upon as somewhat archaic, but will always remain an obvious turning point
for the digital art form on the big screen.
A near lifelike computer-animated masterpiece, we are whisked years into the future to a time of
great technical advancements, but also a time when mankind struggles to survive on a planet
overrun by aliens from afar. Hoping to regain mankind's dominance over the Earth, many in
power have their ideal plans, but one of a brilliant scientist the only nonviolent. Now in a
race against the trigger finger power mongers, this doctor and a small group of hopeful heroes
set out for the life form that holds the key to their survival.
Not enough can be said about the mind-blowing display of computer animation, as well as the
voice performances of such stars as Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi and James Woods.
Unfortunately herein lies one of the movie's weakest points being the awful voice lending of
Donald Sutherland which is embarrassingly dry and more lifeless that his virtual character.
The only other slight weakness of the movie is its plot complexity which may tend to rocket
right over a younger audience's head, but hey... they probably won't even notice with all the
great graphics and action.
Parental Note: Violence, Minor Language
