Gladiator
Bringing to life the ancient days of the Roman gladiator, director Ridley Scott delivers an epic
tale that is nothing short of spectacular.
Starring the ever-talented Russell Crowe as Maximus, a powerful and unstoppable Roman general,
we follow the captivating story of his fall from greatness and his struggle to once again rise
above the rest.
Leading his troops through yet another victorious battle, Maximus is requested by the aged
emperor to take his position as the next Caesar of Rome. However, the emperor's son Commodus
(Joaquin Phoenix), with his own dreams of grandeur, murders his father before his wished are
made known. Immediately taking the position he feels is rightfully his own, he orders Maximus
to be killed.
Escaping with little more than his life, the tale only begins to unfold as Maximus is captured
and sold as a slave, one who soon finds himself a loved gladiator and victor of the
Colosseum.
A breathtaking film, it nearly flawlessly transports us to another time and place, the only
minor annoyances being the choppy filming and editing during many of the fight sequences, and
some artsy-fartsy afterlife mumbo-jumbo that only detracts from the reality of the film. Apart
from this, be prepared to be awed at the immensity of this truly amazing film.
