The Man in the Iron Mask
"The Man in the Iron Mask" returns Leonardo DiCaprio once again to the silver screen with a band
of loyal musketeers at his beck and with the kingdom of Louis the 14th at his fingertips. It
is a time of bitter unrest within France as a war rages at its very doorstep, and from within,
the country is torn by the perils of sickness, hunger and the tyrannical rule of the young
king. All seems lost, but alas a faint glimmer of hope still shines deep within the darkness.
For within the hearts and minds of a handful of once musketeers not only lies the memories of
better days under the former king and the hope of better days under the current king, but also
a dark and nearly forgotten secret they know to be the only hope for their despairing country.
Hidden for many years within the shadows of the castle's dungeon walls, behind the aging iron
bars and walls of stone is a man kept secret from the world outside, the man in the iron
mask.
DiCaprio along with silver screen greats Gabriel Byrne, Gerard Depardieu, Jeremy Irons and John
Malkovich bring to life the days of long past in a dazzling and daring display of courage, hope
and love for their country and fellow man. Unfortunately the acting as well as writing and plot
at times seem to fall short of making this a spectacular movie. Terrific performances by Byrne
and Malkovich keep the movie moving in the right direction. On a more technical level the
score helps to hold everything together, keeping great pace with the movie, the photography
however, even though definitely having its great moments, often feels very enclosed and
claustrophobic unlike DiCaprio's previous movie The Titanic which gave us that bigger than
life feeling which very often makes movies so terrific to watch on the big screen.
The disc is double sided - single layered and contains the original widescreen and full frame
pan and scan versions of the movie. The mastering is terrific, as are the extras.
