Mars: The Red Planet

If you are one who remembers the landing of the Pathfinder on Mars or any other mission, and ate up every bit of the media coverage, or waited impatiently for the latest pictures to be beamed back to earth, then you are going to absolutely love this DVD.

Packed with extras upon extras, we are given an in-depth look at the red planet and how it has influenced and intrigued man. Now it's easier than ever to bring the marvels of the planet home, and much closer to get hold of with a local store selling the disc only about 50 million miles closer than going to the planet yourself. A must have for any space buff and sure to be a favourite among younger space enthusiasts, I know I would have gone crazy for this disc when I was about 15, not to say I didn't enjoy it thoroughly even now.

Over and above the many great extras on the disc, there are plenty of hidden extras sure to keep you hunting for hours. In fact, you may call us crazy and who are we to argue, but we did indeed spend hours at DVD NOW to bring you the list of more than 200 hidden extras on the disc (listed below review). Now I wouldn't go and ruin your fun by simply using our list - remember finding them is half the fun.

In addition to the numbered hidden extras, we also found a few additional hidden extras, as well as a few minor bugs in the disc.

The two hidden unnumbered extras we found were, a heart picture which looks like it may be on the surface of Mars that is accessed by pressing the select button on the last dedication screen of the credits. The other was a 6 1/2 minute musical slide show of space that is found by either pressing the title button at the main menu, or by going right at the optional mode selection and pressing select.

As for slight glitches in the disc, in the Mars surface maps, if you go to (Lat 40s-50s) (Long 50w-40w) you will find the Surface Features title missing. The more interesting glitch is to be found at (Lat 40s-50s)(Long 60w-50w) where you will find two of the same locations beside each other by going East or West, one will contain hidden page #167, the other will send you to the wrong locations if you go North or South.

One of our only disappointments with the disc was that after a long search for the Cydonia Region (Lat 40n-30n)(Long 20w-10w), there was no hidden screen with any pictures of the faces or pyramids on Mars at this location.

Before giving you our list of hidden pages, here are a few locations on Mars we found of interest.
Cydonia (location of Faces and Pyramids) (40n-30n)(20w-10w)
Beer crater (There may be cheese on the moon, but there's Beer on Mars) (10s-20s)(10w-0w)
Playfair (We even get some good advice studying the planet)
Viking 1 landing site (30n-20n)(50w-40w)
Viking 2 landing site (50n-40n)(130e-140e)
Mars 2 landing site (40s-50s)(50e-60e)
Mars 3 landing site (40s-50s)(160w-150w)
Mars 6 landing site (20s-30s)(20w-10w)
Pathfinder landing site (20n-10n)(40w-30w)

** **

The disc is single sided - single layered and contains the original full frame version of the program. The mastering is good but the video interlaced, and the extras are terrific.
