Red Planet

Taking us on one out of this world journey across the stars and our known solar system, "Red Planet" was one of two films for 2000 to have us set foot on the surface of Mars. However, unlike "Mission to Mars," "Red Planet" is based far more on scientific reality and believable survival techniques, though it still manages to keep us racing along the edge of survival like a steep cliff, keeping us at the edge of our seats as it often loses its footing, but still manages to keep moving forward.

Following the first manned mission to Mars, a crew of six head for the red planet in the hopes of discovering why successful efforts to make the planet inhabitable have suddenly taken an unexplained and unsuccessful turn.

Starring Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss, along with the talents of Tom Sizemore, Benjamin Bratt, Simon Baker and Terence Stamp, a captivating story and overall movie finds itself taking half a step backwards with a few minor script flaws and a slight dose of cheesiness. In addition, some absolutely superb computer animation and effects find themselves sharing screen time with several disappointing "obviously done on a computer" shots, which vastly outweighed by the great ones, has the movie suffering little and pulling off one stellar ride among the stars that no sci-fi fan will want to miss.

Parental Note: Minor Language, Minor Violence, Adult Situations, Brief Nudity

** **

The disc is single sided - single layered and contains the original widescreen version of the movie. The mastering is excellent, but there are few extras.
