Saving Private Ryan

War, what is it good for? With the release of "Saving Private Ryan", Hollywood and Spielburg's pocketbook would be two good answers. Received with mixed emotions, the movie takes us to the front lines of the second world war. In a lengthy opening sequence of D-Day, with the landing of troops on the shores of Omaha Beach, viewers are emerged into the grim realities of battle. We see the wounded and dead, but it all goes by in a blur as we come face-to-face with the race of emotions, terror and trauma brought on by the war, all of which Spielburg delivers, not in the usual glorified Hollywood style, but with hard biting in-your-face reality.

Meanwhile back in the U.S., a mother is about to get the news that three of her sons have been killed in action. Not wanting to see all lost, the military puts together a search party to find the last brother, a Private Ryan, and bring him back safely.

Plenty of familiar faces such as; Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Edward Burns, Jeremy Davies and Ted Danson, all give great performances, but they are all greatly overpowered by the reality of the film.
