Hercules and Xena Banner Exchange
Some of us, more fortunate than others, first met David Taylor when he appeared in 1992 on The New Adventures of Black Stallion as Nate, Henry's grandson. I missed this episode, but Mel was kind enough to send me this information. (Thanks, Mel!!)
{Lucy was on this show also, in the episode entitled Riding the Volcano. Tom's Xena Page has pictures and sounds from this episode}
The rest of us met David Taylor in the first of five Hercules telefeatures, which introduced the series to television. In Hercules and the Amazon Women (1992) {yes, this is the same movie Lucy Lawless was in!} David Taylor played Franco, the son of the man that asked Hercules for help against the Amazons. Franco lived in a small village of men, who had lost their wives and female children to the Amazons. Though he was only in a few scenes, he made us feel sorry for the young boy who never knew his mother. Everything concluded with a nice happy ending.
Nearly four years later, we meet David Taylor once more, only this time he is playing Solan on Xena: Warrior Princess. On this second season episode entitled Orphan of War, David Taylor once again plays a young boy who has never met his mother, who just happens to be Xena. Solan lives with the Centaurs, with whom he was left as a newborn. Though Xena regrets this decision, she can't bring herself to tell him that she is his mother. In this touching episode of Xena: Warrior Princess, David Taylor portrays Solan as a fairly innocent boy, but with a sense of loyalty; and knowledge that keep him from great harm.
Amazingly enough, Solan stayed safe in his home with the Centaurs for a third season return in Maternal Instincts. An older and taller David Taylor appears once more as Xena's lovable son. Unfortunately, the peace is once more disturbed with the release of Callisto, by "The Daughter of Darkness" herself, Hope. A little stubborness shows through as Solan protests to be put into hiding, but other than that, he is still the good-natured boy we knew in Orphan of War. Everything goes fine, and we even have a little hope of seeing Solan come out of the episode O.K. {despite seeing the promo, which revealed a little too much} until Gabrielle comes along and meets Hope. The end is quite depressing and does not leave much to look forward to (in terms of seeing Solan again, that is).
Yet in the musical episode The Bitter Suite, The Powers That Be have made it possible for the dead (yes, the dead! *sniff*) to come back to visit. In the end of this episode, we find out that Solan has been guiding Xena and Gabrielle through this dreamland called Illusia. In the heart-warming song Forgive Me, sung by Lucy Lawless herself, Xena finally tells Solan that he is her son. We see an even older version of Solan, as David Taylor seems to be growing. :o) This episode ends happily, thank goodness. (after an episode like Maternal Instincts, who can deal with more sorrow?) But when will we see Solan again?
