So many Xenites have written me asking me certain historical questions about the show. Where is Xena from? When did she have Solon? Who are her parents? I intend to answer all your questions here...with as much accuracy as humanly possible (if not actual historical accuracy). Hold on to your hats folks, we are enter the dark side and about to see how it all got started.

The Galic slave from "the land of the Pharohes" who possessed the knowledge of pressure points introduced in the episode Destiny. Ten Winters ago (from the perspective of the second season), Xena was a pirate, pundering and looting villages along Greece. One day (perhaps fated), a stowaway is detected on board Xena's ship. And before you can say "kung-fu fighting," M' Lila emerges and fights off Xena's men using techinques that defy physics and her two fingers. Transcending the language barrier, Xena and M' Lila forge a friendship in which M' Lila passes her knowledge of pressure points onto Xena. She was so enraged after her death by the hands of Caesar's men, that she thus devoted her life to the death of others. The first of in the line of women who shaped, influence and changed the life of the Warrior Princess. M' Lila wears a shirt that will be an influence to Xena's later armor. |

After her contact with Caesar and after M' Lila's death, Xena, apparently following her death "code" a little too seriously, heads to Ch'in where she mets a truly unique woman named Lao Ma who is described as "the weak one who is soft as water, yet hard as the raging flood." She preaches non-violence, suppression of will, desire and living for others and not for oneself. She is the first to recognize Xena's inner strength and capacity for greatness, even if Xena had not yet recognized it in herself. With powers gained from the suppression of will, Lao Ma is able to beat Xena in a fight without breaking a sweat using something akin to "the force." Lao Ma is the first woman seems to deeply respect and her lesson stay with Xena for over ten years. She finally understand exactly what Lao Ma was preaching a little before Sins of the Past. Lao Ma is a philospher, a mother (to Ming Tien) and woman of peace. Lao Ma is the true author of the Tao Te Ching, but credits her husband, Lao Tzu (as history as recorded it). Lao Ma is the first person to call Xena the warrior princess (apparently, it is a title that will stick). A doorway in Lao Ma's palace is the influence for the design of Xena's chakrum. |

Recognizing the Amazon potential in Xena, Cyane, queen of the Amazons in the Steppes territory, offers her a place among her tribe. Almost reiterating what Lao Ma has taught Xena, she recognizes that it is best to live for other people. Amazons having built their society on mutual respect and sisterhood. Cyane is powerful, as physical strong (if not more) as Xena, fights with skill in trees and trusts her instincts. Xena meets her match as Cyane easily defeats the much less focused Warrior Princess who is still letting her will control her reason. Forming an alliance with Borias, Cyane and Xena form a bond, but this bond is soon broken as Xena joins Alti and murders Cyane and the rest of the tribes leader sentencing them to eternally walk the Amazon Land of the Dead and destroying the Amazon Nation in that territory. It is only years later that Xena atones for her sins her and puts right what she made wrong all those years ago. |

The last link in the chain, Gabrielle finally brings Xena the peace she has spend most of her life searching for. With her help, Xena is finally able to break out of the cycle of violence and hatred. Saving her village from Draco and the slavery, Xena can't seem to get rid of the dreamy bard looking to get out of her closed-minded town, Potediaia, and expand her horizons. "You've got to take me with you. Teach me everything you." Although she must leave her family behind, she finds a new home beside the warrior princess. Xena finds that Gabrielle is her light and gives Xena the gift of a light of her own. Gabrielle has become Xena's center and the only thing that keeps her walking down the path of redemption. |
Friends and Family

Xena's beloved younger brother whose death send her spiraling into the abyss it took her years to climb out of. The youngest child of Atris and Cyrene, Lyceus and his sister were close. He didn't like to fish, but Xena dragged him along on trips away. Their happiness was shattered, however, when Cortese's army raided their home village sending some running of the hills while others decided to make a stand and fight. Lyceus and Xena organized a group from their village, but it was a battle never would see the end of. Lyceus was barely a young man, probably around seventeen while his sister was probably nineteen or twenty. Through a twist of fate (the Three Fates actually), we were able to glimpse the man Lyceus would have become if he had lived in the episode "Remember Nothing." Lyceus was fiercly loyal and was ready to fight for what he believed in, even if it might his own death. |

The only child of Xena fathered by Borias during her days as a warlord. Soon after Borias was killed by Dagine after betraying Xena and allying with the Centaurs, Xena gave birth to their son, but to shelter him from her enemies to protect him from things a child should never know, she gave him to Kaliepus, the leader of the Centaurs, to raise in exchange, she pulled out her army and promised never to return. Ten years later, Xena, on mission to protect the Ixion stone from the warlord Dagine's hands, entered the life of her child again (Orphan of War). But believing she killed his father, Solon wanted Xena dead. Solon grew up believing that his father was a noble hero and his mother, left all alone, died soon after. After her mission against Dagine was completed, Xena left her child's life again, refusing to reveal the truth of her relation to him. A year after this, Xena returned to the Centaur Village to celebrate a new peace between the Centaur nation. Unfortunately, joy at seeing her son again was short lived after Hope, Gabrielle's child, killed Kaliepus. Now orphaned again and wondering why everyone who never loved him has dead, he wanted to travel with Xena and Gabrielle. Agreeing, Xena decided it was time to reveal her identity, but tragedy struck again as Solon was struck dead by Hope. His death send Xena over the edge and she took Gabrielle with her (literally). Solon, however, recognizing the special relationship his mother and Gabrielle possessed and not wanting his death to lead to the severing of their relationship, constructed Illusia for them to resolve their problems (Maternal Instincts). Solon, finally knowing how much is mother truly loved him, hugged Xena and told her he loved her. It was later learned that Alti cast a curse over Solon to never know the love of both of his parents. It was a curse that worked as Solon died believing both his parents were dead. |

After Caesar's betrayal, Xena headed east and along the way joined forces with a roving warlord named Borias. Probably from the region that is now Russia, Xena became Borias partner and lover as they moved mercilessly through villages sacking and destroy for their selfish gain. Borias convinced Xena to form an alliance with the kingdoms of Ch'in, but in the end, Xena ruined these plans by kidnapping the heir to the throne. Borias then betrayed Xena by handing her over to Ming Tzu. After leaving Ch'in, Xena learned she was pregnant with Borias' child. During this time, Borias was beginning to change and in Xena's words becoming "as soft as a pig's belly." Impending fatherhood must have made Borias question the direction of his life and soon after this, he betrayed Xena again by allying with the Centaur nation to protect the Ixion stone from Xena's power-hungry grasp. It was this decision that lead to his death at the hands of one of Xena's men. |
