The Secret of Roan Inish (1994), directed by John Sayles

Sayles, one of America's greatest filmmakers, is normally associated with very American projects. Roan Inish, however, is anything but American: the story of an Irish family which looks back at its roots during the bleak 20th century.

I don't have much to say about this film, other than that its lead is a fine child actress, giving a fine performance as Fiona. This film wasn't really my cup of tea: I found it altogether too slow-moving. While many critics love this film, however, the fault is, no doubt, mine.

It is a film easier to admire than to love, in my humble opinion. The fine cinematography, acting, writing, editing, and seal training (!) are easy to recognize. I just don't think I could bear to watch it again.
