“Out of Africa, into E-mail”
She’s best known for the ‘70s mystery-comedy Hart to Hart. Now, Stefanie Powers is president of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation, which she created as a memorial to the late actor, a close friend. The organization runs a 2,000-acre wildlife sanctuary in Kenya, which among other works educates young Kenyans about wildlife conservation. Y-Life asked her just how she gets it all done.
Y-Life: Are you a totally remote boss, or do you visit the troops?
Stefanie Powers: I go there a lot, but I also use e-mail. I’m a terrific fan of that. It saves tremendous amounts of money in not having to send faxes or make phone calls. Plus it’s more reliable than mail to Kenya for sure.
Y-Life: What bothers you about it?
Stefanie Powers: The amount of junk you get. I mean, I love my friends, but my god, please. The e-mail jokesters I can do without!
Y-Life: Do you web surf?
Stefanie Powers: Oh, dear, no. It’s too time consuming. As a source of information it’s absolutely fabulous, but to get the correct access, to find the information, requires that I devote myself solely to that machine.
Y-Life: As a recent host on TV’s Romance Classics network, do you see e-mail as a medium of love?
Stefanie Powers: Absolutely not. If you want to be romantic, you’ve got to do it in the flesh. E-mail is an absolute godsend for work but not for love. So don’t send her an attachment, bring her real flowers!
