At 58, Stefanie Powers has appeared in Hollywood movies, on the British stage, and in TV series such as Hart to Hart and the Bafta-nominated Doctors, and has still managed to find time to marry twice, have a nine-year affair with alcoholic Hollywood legend William Holden, and learn seven languages, including Swahili – "I’m constantly trying to reinvent myself. I have a positive attitude to life, otherwise I’d roll over and play dead."
Born Stefania Federkiewicz in California, her Polish parents divorced when she was eight, and her father subsequently married five times – "I don’t know anyone who in some form doesn’t have a dysfunctional life. What is functional?" She has been married twice, first to actor Gary Lockwood aged 21 – "I was a virgin – just, I think" – and later to polo-playing millionaire biologist, Patrick de la Chesnais, whom she divorced in 1999 - "I was probably not meant to be a wife. I don’t think I’ll do it again."
RT’s Andrew Duncan quizzes actress Stefanie Powers about her lifelong love of Africa, the ageing process – "Darling, there’s nothing I can do. If there was some new plastic-surgery technique that would make me have an epiphany, I’d do it" – and why acting is a "very odd" business.
Thanks Rob in the UK!
