Trapper John episode guide part 2
part 1
- Baby on the Line
- An electrician who works for the
hospital has a sick baby boy, who turns out to have the internal organs of a
baby girl. Stanley spots the problem, but he let's Gonzo explain it to the
parents, and Trapper help convince them to do the right thing. Jackpot, meanwhile, is trying to identify a secret admirer.
- Life, Death and Vinnie Duncan
- Stanley & EJ move out of
his father's house after a patient dies who had been the center of a very
public display of affection from a guy named Vinnie Duncan. EJ says they
have only been married 3 months, but internal evidence (i.e., Trapper takes a
month to recover after "Thanks for Giving") makes it a little weird. S'okay.
It means I can play with the timeline. (evil grin)
- It Only Hurts When I Love
- Gloria adopts Andrea. Some nice byplay with Stan when Andrea first comes in.
- Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow
- Ernie becomes Nursing supervisor, but
needs an ear operation. Gonzo's treating a musician, and has worked up a
little in-hospital band, which Stanley desperately wants to join. He plays a really funny assortment of instruments.
- The Spy Who Bugged Me
- The hospital's being audited,
and Gonzo's being sued. Stanley won't back him up on the diagnosis, either,
which is pretty uncharitable, but typical of his reluctance to get in a
malpractice suit. n.b. Stan pays bribe to a con artist, believing that the
hospital will be closed and patients-and friends- will suffer otherwise.
- Forget Me Not
- One of the surgeons is suffering from Alzheimer's
disease, and it's reached the point where it's causing problems. Really good
scene with Stan when the surgeon calls for help and Stanley goes to pick him
up.
- Pasts Imperfect
- A girl shows up claiming that Stan and she are
former lovers -- only Stanley doesn't think so. She chains herself to his
car and threatens suicide if she's cut loose, and also has ulcers which might
kill her. Really good Stan episode. Also very nice for EJ.
- Primetime
- Gonzo's mom has a romance. A roller derby girl goes after
Stan. And the nurses revolt when Ernie cracks down on the little things.
- Blue Genes
- Memorial Messenger newsletter in this
episode n.b. "Someone needs to do something" about the bulletin board.
Everyone complains Stan does something. There's a new researcher, who
turns out to be experimenting on herself, She knows Riverside Senior who
"never mentioned he had a son" (in front of Gonzo, Jackpot & Slocum).
- Friends in High Places
- Gonzo gets so wrapped up in a rich socialite,
he starts neglecting his duties and Trapper fires him. Stan is one of his
defenders.
- South Side Story
- Gonzo finds out the hospital owns some slum
property, and has to convince a key member of the board to fix it up.
Trapper's dealing with an inventor who's gratitude is driving him nuts.
Stan rescues the inventor at the end. Nice bit in the Titanic when Gonzo
throws a wine tasting party. Stan and Jackpot are last to leave, and it's
pretty clear that Stan a: had a good time and b: is not much of a drinker.
- I Only Have Ice for You
- Gloria's in isolation because she's been
exposed to something, so EJ and Stanley babysit Andrea. EJ wants to go to LA
to study oral surgery and Stan's not happy about it, so they wrangle until EJ
finds out that she is pregnant.
- What a Difference A Day Makes
- Trapper has a rotten birthday.
Something is making patients sicker instead of better, and Stan figures out
that it is contaminated plasma.
- And for Loyal and Devoted Service
- The board tries to fire Arnold
before he can collect his retirement.
- May Divorce Be With You
- Melanie's running a seminar/gripe session
for doctor's wives, and it's causing problems. Stan notices that EJ's acting
funny, but it turns out she might lose the baby. Great scenes with Stan and
EJ as they decide what to do. I especially like the bedroom scene -- even
though, or probably because -- Stan hardly says a thing! That is a man with
good sense!
- All About Everett
- One of Stanley's old medical schoolmates shows up
with abdominal pain, and claiming to be an eastern mystic. The hospital also
has a very rich, famous patient, and a backstabbing doctor is trying to take
over Trapper's job.
- Old Man Liver
- Stanley is trying to figure out how to look more
authoritative -- so he tries to grow a beard. Gonzo has a girl after him who
wants him to father her baby. And the hospital has a patient who is 119
years old.
- The Final Cut
- Gonzo's got to decide between three surgical
residency candidates. Jackpot's a little too popular with some patients.
Not a lot of Stanley, but an interesting bit where he's trying to hang onto
someone for emergency medicine and gets turned down.
- Fat Chance
- Trapper has a patient who has never been able to lose weight, and comes to the realization that maybe she should be taken as she is. Gloria and Andrea's dog needs to have surgery, and end up having it at the hospital. Stan is wildly disapproving when he first discovers the dog in the hospital, but caves in like Carlsbad when Gloria and Gonzo give him the job of telling Andrea no.
- The Agony of Da'Feet
- Trapper is in Sacramento and the hospital is
preparing for the Bay City Marathon. Gloria, Gonzo, and Ernie are working
the aid stations, and Jackpot is in charge of ER. Stanley runs in the
marathon, unaware that EJ has gone into labor three weeks early. This is one
of the all time great Stanley episodes. It's also great for EJ.
- Mother Load (AKA) If It Aint Broke
- Gloria is ready to finalize
Andrea's adoption -- but Andrea wants to meet her real mom. Not a lot of
Stanley, but in one scene he does call her "Miss B".
- Supernurse
- Gloria gets certified to do some things for cardiac
patients without supervision and a new doctor objects. Stanley,
interestingly enough, doesn't -- in fact, he assigns Gloria her first
patient.
- Special Delivery
- Gloria's in trouble for helping a fellow nurse
who has been acting as a midwife. Gonzo talks Stan into helping him pull a
fast one on Arnold and establish a more home-like facility for expectant
mothers.
- Play Your Hunch
- There are psychic researchers at the hospital and
Ernie has to deal with the possibility that she qualifies. Stanley would
like to be psychic, but shows no aptitude. Ernie does convince him,
though, that she is, in a good scene with Gonzo, Ernie and Jackpot.
- A Little Knife Music
- Gonzo's dealing with a baby with dwarfism, and
a fellow surgeon who isn't willing to try anything dangerous. Ernie's son is
quitting the gyms to take up ballooning. Bit w/ Stan where son says he got
landing rights at Riverside Senior's vineyard, and Stan says "he never
invited me." Want to kick R senior! In front of Trapper, Jackpot and
Gloria.
- Send in the Clowns
- Gonzo's dealing with a very sick child who wants
to see a circus. Ernie, Gloria and Jackpot are trying to deal with a woman
who is coming faithfully to visit the room where her husband died. Stanley
is besotted with little Stanley, chosing books for him like Tolstory and
Voltaire. Wonderful bit with Stanley and Arnold. "What elephant?"
- Where There's a Will
- Stanley's avoiding his annual physical, so
Jackpot, Ernie and Gloria finagle to get the information they need. Gonzo
finds himself the heir of a man who runs a numbers operation and wants to buy
his way into heaven by having the money go for something worthwhile.
- The Jackpot Pays Off
- Stanley's running the hospital art show -- and
being conned by a patient who claims to be an art psychologist. Jackpot is
facing up to the consequences of having promised to get medical insurance to
an old friend for low payments when she comes in ill.
- This Gland is Your Gland
- In one of the silliest moves the hospital
board ever makes, a robot nurse is tested at SF Memorial. Stan and Jackpot
consider using the robot for stockmarket and racing, and in fact, when the
robot leaves, the staff has a farewell party. Gonzo's dealing with a
paranoid patient who just might have something physically wrong with her
causing her trouble.
- The Fred Connector
- The hospital is coping with an entire rugby team
and an ecccentric visiting detective. Also, someone is stealing drugs. Good
bit with Stan when the rugby team arrives.
- I Do, I Don't
- Another romance for Ernie -- and he's sick. Arnold
coerces Gonzo, Jackpot, and Stan into being part of a charity fashon show.
- It's About Time
- Begins with ER practicing their disaster routine.
Trapper gets an old watch which sometimes lets him see what he would be
putting up with in World War I conditions. An oddball episode in some ways.
But Stanley with a handlebar mustache is worth the admission...
- Aunt Mildred is Watching You
- Riverside Senior -- who would rather
spend money on consultants than staff, hires Mildred Prosser (Proffer?) to
look at the hospital. And she installs video cameras all over the place,
which makes everyone paranoid. Good scene with Stan trying to convince her
to remove the cameras. Another good sequence as he and Trapper do the
detective work to remove an unscrupulous surgeon.
- Moonlighting Becomes You
- Jackson's moonlighting, and risking his
job; Slocum's hired a "humor" therapist to help people, and the women who
runs the diner across the way from the hospital needs medical care and won't
take it if no one can cover for her at the diner. Wait til you see what Stan
does with the pie... Directed by Charles Siebert
- A Change of Heart
- Trapper needs to do a heart transplant for a
young patient. The hospital is losing money, in part because Bay General is
advertising. Trapper is dead set against advertising, Slocum, and Stan both
think it may be necessary. Gonzo has a brain dead patient who would be the
perfect heart donor, but also an injunction that prevents him from pulling
the plug.
- My Son, The Doctor

Shulman....Carl Ballantine]
- Buckaroo Bob Rides Again
- An old TV star needs help and support from his fans and his old sidekick, too. Stan and EJ have a fight and Stan ends up staying with Trapper. Not the best episode for him, as the writers have made him really nit-picky and it feels a little, well, off.
- School Nurse
- good Ernie episode, when she tries to find out who attacked a friend. Stanley's in conflict with a mad artistic room painter.
- Eternally Yours
- Gonzo thinks he's a jinx. At least until the last scene when Stanley gets
the bad fortune cookie...
- Cat, Crashes and Creeps
- An ambulance driver has a medical problem, Jackpot's got a dying patient
who's a cat lady. (and who talks Stan into helping her find a place for her
cats -- proof, as if we needed it, that Stan is violently allergic to cats.)
- Promises, Promises
- The hospital has a particularly brilliant intern, who has a chance to go to
a prestigious surgical team, but has promised to go back to practice in his
home town. Stanley says his son is planning to go to med school in "the fall
semester of 2002"...
