Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis originally created the characters Bob and Doug McKenzie in protest against government requirements for "identifiable Canadian content" in domestically produced television programming. The skits, as an SCTV program "The Great White North" featured two dim witted brothers who combined as many negative Canadian stereotypes as possible. Despite this, they became so popular that the skits were included in the U.S. version of the program, and Thomas and Moranis were made members of the Order of Canada for their contribution to Canadian culture.
From their television show they produced an album entitled "Bob & Doug McKenzie - Great White North". Their album was no different than their television show. It included things such as Doug doing sound effects of Darth Vader, a Mig-29 fly-by, and a a 57 T-bird with a 450, hardtop, AM radio, with a door that sticks. Most of the album however, was a melange of burping, goofy phrases, and hilarious conversations.
In 1983 they made a movie entitled: "Strange Brew; the Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie". The summary from the laserdisc jacket reads as follows:
Strange Brew will leave you drunk with laughter and hung over with hilarity! Hey all you hosers out there -- what's more fun than a sixpack of beer, a dozen donuts and a pound of back bacon? Like, Strange Brew, okay, starring Bob and Doug McKenzie (Dave Thomas and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Rick Moranis) of SCTV fame. They've been called the "Cheech and Chong of beer drinkers" by The New York Times and likened to Laurel and Hardy by the Bergen Record. Not bad, eh?
All the McKenzie brothers want is a free case of beer and a quiet place to belch, so they put a mouse in a beer bottle and go to the Elsinore Brewery to complain. There, they encounter the diabolical Brewmeister Smith (Max Von Sydow), who has concocted a scheme to rule the world by contaminating Elsinore Beer with a mind controlling chemical.
Do the McKenzie brothers make the world safe for guzzlers? Can Bob drink his way out of a huge vat of beer before he drowns? Okay, hosers, you'll have to see the movie, eh?
