"I was just a little girl
Skinny legs, a press and curl
My mother always thought I'd be a star
But way before the record deals
Streets that nurtured Lauryn Hill
made sure that I'd never go too far"
-Every Ghetto, Every City-

The 27 year old singer/songwriter/actress/producer has won five Grammy's for her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, worked with a lot of famous and great artists, and become the mother of two. It seems like she has done it all.

The story starts in South Orange, New Jersey, May 25th 1975 when Lauryn Hill was born the second second child, and only daughter, of Mal and Valerie Hill. Her father was a computer consultant and her mother a high school English teacher.
Music had always been in Lauryn's life from the early start, her father sang at weddings and her mother studied piano. But Lauryn discovered music on her own for the first time as a 6 year old. She went looking for old 45s in the family house basement. The first record she found was the song If I Should Lose You by the Dreamlovers. She went looking for more 45s and found music from many of the greats, such as Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, and fell in love.
She started writing songs together with her brother Malaney, lyrics that were very mature for her young age.
At age 13 she performed on Showtime At The Apollo, with Smokey Robinson's Who's Lovin' You.
"From the beginning, Lauryn was that kid who took the hairbrush and sang in front of the mirror, she was the little girl who wanted to dress up, always. And she told me, I don't know what part of show business I'll be in, but I'll be in it." Says mother Valerie.

Around the time of the performance at the Apollo Lauryn met the two cousins Wyclef Jean and Prakazrel "Pras" Michel in Junior High School, and the Fugees are born. After acting in some soaps and the film Sister Act II:Back In the Habit alongside Whoopi Goldberg, the trio release their debut album in 1993, Blunted on Reality under the name Fugees(Translator Crew). The album didn't sell very well, and critics said 17 year old Lauryn should go solo. But Lauryn staied with the group. And 1996 their first single in three years came out, Fu-gee-la. And after that their second album The Score, which Lauryn had helped co-write and co-produce, hit the streets. The album sold over 17 million units which made the Fugees the biggest-selling rap group of all time. The trio also recived two Grammy awards: Best Rap Album for The Score and Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for Lauryn's beautiful cover of th classic Roberta Flack song Killing Me Softly.

At the age of 21, still touring with the Fugees, Lauryn became pregnant. And in 1997 she gave birth to her first child, a baby boy, Zion David Marley. Son of Rohan Marley, and grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley.
The Fugees disappeared from the public eye for a while. Working on soundtracks, and solo albums. First out with a solo album was Wyclef Jean with The Carnival featuring Refugee Allstars.
Lauryn didn't really plan her solo album. She wrote and produced songs for other artists. She wrote and produced the title track for Aretha Franklin's first album in many years, A Rose Is Still A Rose. While writing for others and giving her songs away Lauryn realized it was her own life she was writing about, and started recording her debut album.
She moved back into her childhood home in South Orange, NJ, and built a recording studio in the basement where she once discovered the beauty of music.

In October '98 her debut single was released, Doo Wop(That Thing), which sold gold. The album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, sold Gold, Platinum, Double Platinum and Triple Platinum in November the same year. The album featured 15 songs, with guest vocals from Mary J. Blige and D'Angelo, and sounds like no other hip hop record. Lauryn doesn't only show off her rhyming skills she shows off her beautiful voice too. As the album was climbing the charts Lauryn became a mother again in November 12th '98. To a baby girl named Selah Lousie Marley.

Lauryn is also the founder of the non-profit organization, The Refugee Camp Youth Project. The project is all about giving back to the community and improving the life for inner-city kids, helping them gain some selfasteem.

Lauryn has been described as a "Bob Marley (of the )21st Centuary" by Public Enemy's Chuck D. Lauryn has actually recorded a duet with Bob Marley called Turn Your Lights Down Low.

Whatever Lauryn plans for her future her family will be near by. Though her hectic work she finds time for her children and husband. Her mother Valerie helps out with the kids as well.
"This mother thing is very real to me," Lauryn says. "it's not just a publicity stunt or anything like that." Maybe she'll have more children, her grandmother was the mother of 13 and always managed keeping the famly together.

In March 2002 Lauryn released her second album, a double CD with Unplugged versions of new songs. The CD was recorded in automn of 2001, when Lauryn was pregnant with her third child. The album features all new song performed only with an acustic guitar and Lauryn's beautiful voice.
If there will ve a studio album is yet to be seen.

"I will just let the inspiration lead me."
