Not the usual negative fare of the world media but stories of ordinary people. These people tell their stories ngobrol-ngobrol style, which is the way they normally communicate in daily life. Formal or literal Bahasa Indonesia, as it is taught in Schools and Universities, is generally only used in formal meetings or written communication.

This growing library offers students of Indonesian studies a valuable insight into a culture and language so diverse, that it is impossible to comprehend without the Insight Indonesia Video Library.

Bedeng
10 mins. English Voice over.

Bedeng translated, means shack or shed but usually refers to an area occupied by squatters. Most of these people have left their Kampung to seek fame and fortune in the larger cities of Indonesia. When they have saved enough money to move into better accommodation, their makeshift shelters are often taken over by the local preman or hoodlums.

Bedeng was one of these areas. Today, after thirty years of constant renovation, most of the houses consist of bricks and mortar but the locals still refer to the area as Bedeng.
