Some Like It Hot 1959
The fifties were a sparse decade for comedy, but the end of the decade brougth a movie that was taken on classic status since its release in 1959.
Billy Wilder`s outrageous and consistently hilarious farce Some Like It Hot had a one-joke premise that threatened to topple over into bad taste: on St. Valentine`s Day in 1927, two down-and-out musicians(Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) witness a mass gangland slaying in a Chicago garage.
Fleeing in panic, they join an all-girl band heading for a job in Florida, disguised as improbable females. The frantic complications involve the band singer (Marilyn Monroe), a voluptuous but naive blonde beauty who falls for Curtis in his second disguise as a millionaire.
At the same time, Lemmon, coming to believe that he is a girl, finds a "suitor" in wealthy but addled old Joe E. Brown.
When the gangland killers, led by George Raft, come to Florida, a frezied chase ensues, but it all ends happily.
In the famous ending, Lemmon reveals to the relentless Brown that he`s really a guy. The cheerful geezer replies,"Well, nobody`s perfect!"
The cast could not be better: Tony Curtis reveals an unexpected comic flair, Monroe invests her godd-hearted blonde with a touch of pathos, and Brown is a joy. But Some Like It Hot belongs to Jack Lemmon, whose performance is awesomely funny. From his first moment in women`s clothing, struggling to stay uprigth on his high heels, he induces helpless laugther...
