Facts:
- Lived in the U.S. since age 10
- Grew up on New York's Lower East Side
- Won a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts
- Made it to Broadway in 1915
- Made an isolated film appearance during the silent era in The Bright Shawl
- After his performance in Little Caesar, he was typecast for several years in similar roles
- In 1956 he was forced to sell his famous art collection, one of the world's largest privately owned, as part of his divorce settlement with his wife of 29 years, actress Gladys Lloyd
- In 1956 he returned to Broadway
- Film appearances in the 60's were mostly supporting roles
- In 1973 he was awarded a special Oscar in recognition of hi achievements in film
