TIM DABBS
Listening to a set of songs form singer/songwriter Tim Dabbs is like a visit
with an old friend. Tim's down to earth songs will take you on a
journey—sailing the clear waters of the North Country, down Pennsylvania
Highways, and out to the mystical ruins of the Anasazi at Mesa Verde. He'll
also take you on a journey through his heart, with love songs and ballads.
Tim's fingerstyle guitar playing is a style that is very much his own—a
product of over 25 years playing teaching, and performing acoustic music.
His melodic playing style adds a welcome backdrop to his tenor voice, and is
well suited for the topical songs and tender ballads that make up his
repertoire.
Tim has opened for some well-known artists on the contemporary folk circuit,
including David Mallet, Tom May, Erica Wheeler and Michael McNevin. In
1997, Tim aired a one-hour special of interview and music for National
Public Radio's River City Folk. Tim was invited to contribute to a tribute
album for Gordon Lightfoot, an international collaboration that was produced
by Wayne Francis of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Tim's most recent project was contributing four songs to Legacy, a
fundraising tribute album to the late John Denver. Tim performed at the
release concert in Aspen, Colorado in the fall of 1998, to a standing-room
only crowd at the Hotel Jerome. All proceeds from the album go to the
Plant-It 2000 foundation, for the planting of indigenous trees.
Tim cites Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, and Harry Chapin as influences on
his writing and performing style. Tim writes in the topical style much of
the time, reminiscent of Lightfoot or Chapin. He has mastered the story
song; this is evident in "The Day the Rumors Came True," a haunting tale of
the infamous Johnstown Flood of 1889. The song has been accepted into the
archives of the National Flood Monument and Johnstown Flood Museum, and
remains one of Tim's more popular songs on the Midwest folk circuit where he
performs.
Tim often performs with his wife, Amy, an accomplished musician in her own
right, with a degree in Flute Performance. Amy joins Tim in live
performances on the flute, piccolo, guitar and mandolin. Tim and Amy
released Michigan Christmas in 1991,and are currently working on a new
release of holiday music for the 1999 season.
Juniper Light is the debut CD from Tim Dabbs, an independent release on the
Hands & Harmony label. The album is primarily original music, with covers
by Steve Goodman, David Mallet and Clint Black. It is a scrapbook of Tim's
travels, passions and musical influences.
