Bird in Paradise
I'm terrible at inventing my own story ideas from scratch; I tend to adopt other people's ideas and incorporate my own into them. Usually the continuity isn't affected, but it does get pushed a bit! ^-^ I first came across the Edenworld Saga as a preview picture on a website advertising comics by Angry Viking Press. Since then I discovered it has its own web site with an online version of the comic book series. As is often the case when a new obsession takes hold, I started wondering what would happen if one of my characters were to visit Edenworld. The resulting chapters - accurate or otherwise - go something like this;
Graphic shows Ashel Oushia in command of an armourdon, with Jay-Bird seated behind him, arms round his middle. Behind and around them, an alpine scene stretches out in all its glory. In the sky a small dragonlike silhouette flies instead of an eagle. In the middle distance, a curious futuristic settlement with wind turbines can be seen.
First, Furred, Sekond. Jay-Bird decides to see what would happen
if she went through the Axalon's storage room portal the same way twice.
The first time takes her to Ash's anthro dimension, a place she has visited many
times before. Dragging him with her, she goes around and re-enters the portal,
from the reverse side, a second time. Ashel delights on discovering a green
and fertile world with mountains, forests, meadows and small Nordic settlements,
but Jay-B is in a tertiary dimension to her own and her optics are out of
phase with this universe. In other words, she's blind. She can't relocate
the portal they came through. They're stranded!
Ash comes into his own. En route to the nearest settlement, he comes across
a creature completely unlike a horse, but a runaway steed nevertheless.
Befriending it, they secure transport, but the creature has its own ideas
of which direction to take. Instead of the Nordic settlement, they
arrive at a curious place which, if Jay-Bird could see, would remind her
of photographs of Autobot City on Earth. Now Jay-B comes into her own, as
the Jotuns turn out to be sentient Metals very similar to Transformers.
Establishing a rapport with one of them, Lyron, she links cybernetically
with him and quickly works out the native spoken language. All she wants
to do is find the portal so she and Ash can return home, but since she can't
see, she can't find it. As evening draws near, the two stay in Jotunheim
overnight.
Fitting In. The following day the duo discover that there are humans
as well as Metals living in Jotunheim, but these Norns are refugees from
a city with very strict religious views. Any not falling into line with
said views are regarded as traitors or 'tainted'. They have no room for
Metals in their regime either. Lyron's friend, Panchun, is a spy for the
Jotuns, and also gifted in certain minor magic arts. She creates a talisman
for Jay-Bird to wear that draws from Ashel and Lyron's visual abilities.
If they go blind, so does Jay-B. When Lyron's vision is deactivated to demonstrate,
Jay-Bird discovers that Ash is colour-blind.
Wandering around Jotunheim later, Jay-B makes friends in the Norn community
by helping out with various small chores, including cooking, using tips
and methods learnt from Rattrap on the Axalon back home. She samples food
prepared by the Norns and cheerfully tells all of her personal preferences
and flavour discoveries. At midday she rejoins the Jotuns and discusses
'methods of refuelling' among their kind. During the midday meal of both
races, she is annoyed to find that she is being watched closely by everyone
as she eats. Reacting angrily at first, she then recants, thinking perhaps
she is being greedy with scanty resources. It turns out that the locals
have simply never seen any one enjoying both chilli con carne and solar
energon before!
Relationships. Jay-Bird makes friends in Jotunheim. Lyron's brother,
Terratio, tells her some of the history of the Jotun race and the conflicts
with the Norn. She removes her talisman to show to Ennesix, a charismatic
Metal, and discovers that she can now see without it on. Ennesix explains
the most likely reason; that her optics merely needed time to adjust to
this dimension. As Jay-Bird learns about the Jotuns, so Ash learns about
the Norns, Pan acting as a guide. Ashel knows enough of the local language
by now to understand Panchun's thanks for retrieving her steed, an armourdon
called Gouli. They become firm friends. The name of this planet is Sekond,
and anthro is nothing new - some of the races here include beings
not unlike himself. Even in the Norn city of Bifrost he is paid scant attention, aside
from an occasional admiring glance at his markings or clothing. Pan inquires
after Ashel's relationship with the Maxette. He replies that it developed
over time. In spite of her sometimes boisterous nature, her heart was good.
His reservations faded as custom and habit took over. Ash politely inquires
after Panchun and Lyron. She sighs and wonders too. Is Lyron afraid of commitment?
On their return, Ash and Pan greet their respective partners warmly. Panchun
looks envious when the visitors embrace. Lyron tries to cheer her up, but
when she asks him if he loves her, he dries up awkwardly. Ash asks Jay-Bird
loudly how much she missed him while he was away. Such a public query is
unusual for the normally reserved Ashel, but Jay-B spreads wings and arms
widely, declaring 'this much times infinity!' The hug which follows is obvious.
Panchun asks Lyron similarly, and hesitantly the Jotun opens his arms and
echoes Jay-B's words. Panchun settles for this, chiding him for being 'a
big dumb idiot'. The heat off, Lyron jokes that he loves her too. Panchun
interprets it literally, delighted. She gives a kiss on his lower lip and
a hug on the jawline. Concerned for her welfare (and embarrassed by the
kiss), the Jotun tries to remind her that he is a Jotun, not a Norn male.
She faithfully refuses to be deterred. Lyron concedes defeat and delicately
kisses her cheek. Not far away, Jay-Bird nudges Ashel knowingly...
Encounters With Dragons. Ash and Jay-B wander about the valley near
Jotunheim enjoying the tranquil surroundings. Ashel is unusually content
and relaxed. As much as he misses his homeworld of Rynjiir, and in spite
of concerns about finding the portal to his home dimension, he is rapidly taking to Sekond.
Of course at this point something interrupts their walk. A huge fiery reptile
appears in the fields and causes havoc as it attacks several of
the Norn's livestock and work animals put to graze there. Ashel and Jay-Bird
overhear the alarm of the Norn refugee farmers, intercept and challenge
the dragon. Ash wields an energo-sword and uses it to distract the beast,
while Jay-Bird pulls out a bo-staff and charges up her wings, radioing the
settlement for Jotun backup. Both lead it away from the farmers and livestock
in the fields. Then Jay-B detects something about the dragon that reminds
of her of Dinobot, back home on the Axalon. This dragon isn't a mere beast,
it's sentient! Immediately, she tells Ash to lower his sword, puts away
her bo-staff and re-radios Jotunheim saying it's a false alarm.
She apologises to the dragon as if speaking to Dinobot, explains to it how
heavily these 'yumins' rely on certain creatures in their daily lives. After
a lot of snorting, growling and posturing (much like Dinobot!), the dragon takes off without
harming her, Ash or any more livestock. Jay-Bird has a reflective moment,
suspecting that the dragon was old and to save face would prolly attack
a village elsewhere in its search for easy food. Did she do the right thing..?
Ashel remarks that if he were a sentient dragon, he would attempt to make
peace with the locals and come to an arrangement. It would be more honourable
than stealing.
*En route back to Jotunheim, they hear a lot of growling and hissing in
a bush and investigate. It's another dragon - a very small serpentine one
- and it appears to be in some sort of trap. Jay-B holds the creature steady
while Ash cuts the wires with his sword. Instead of returning to the wild,
it silently follows them back to Jotunheim and infiltrates the very abode
they are guests in; Lyron and Terratio's. Before long it has a basket by
the door and a place in the home. It behaves like a cat, but with dog-like
loyalty. They name it Radar, due to its ability to sense other dragons minutes
before they arrive.
*The dragon views the duo from a hidden vantage point. It is indeed ancient, wise and magical - it understands their language as easily as they do. It decides that the two visitors are quite right, and in a sly flash of inspiration, that they shall be its new providers...
Subsequent chapters focus on the interplay between the characters and their environment and the various adventures encountered while relocating the portal. Ash and Jay eventually return to their respective dimensions - with a promise of regular return visits to see their new friends.
