Authors Notes: This is in answer to Deanna's request. I'm playing with ages here...so bear with me. This is on the fly, so no spell checking....just furious typing.
Her request went like this...."I was watching Do Not Go Gentle today and got a thought for a new plot bunny. At the point when the Judge is in the hospital and calls Mark. He hangs up saying "I'm fine." Just before he hangs up the phone, there is a shot of Mark with a worried look on his face. What is going through his mind then? What happened when the last person he cared about said "I'm fine"? Any takers for a missing scene?? Deanna"
Now I feel really bad about this, but I kind of wrote this a year ago, and am just now posting it here. This was posted through my group originally 11-10-2007.
Missing Scene for Do Not Go Gentle......
"I'm Fine." Came through the phone line, but Mark wasn't hearing the Judges
voice...it was his mothers.
20 years ago....New Jersey
"I'm fine sweetheart, really. Why don't you go and play with your friends."
Donna McCormick said as she tousled her sons auburn curls. //He needs a
haircut before school starts back.// She thought to herself. There was always
so much to be done, especially as a single parent. She always worried if he
had enough....did he know how much he was truly loved.
Mark took in his mothers frail appearance and shook his head. "Nah, I'd
rather stay in with you. Do ya need some water or maybe you'd like some pudding
or something." His voice held a twinge of desperation. He wanted so badly
to help his mom, but he knew that if there was nothing that the doctors could
do, then he couldn't do much more than keep his mom company. Even though
she wouldn't come right out and say it, Mark knew that the doctors had sent her
home to die. The cancer had progressed to far for treatments to have any
affect. He was too worried about her at the moment to even consider how this
would affect his future...it didn't matter anyway. His mom was all he had and
without her he couldn't even imagine a future.
He was sitting on the side of her bed, looking into her hazel eyes...the
eyes of an angel he thought. "I love you mom." He whispered, and she cupped
his face in her hands. "I love you too baby. You know you have my heart and
my soul don't you? My heart beats stronger whenever you are near...that's how
much I love you."
Embarrassed, Mark blushed ever so slightly. Only his mom could do that to
him. "Me too mom...me too." He jumped slightly, startled as she was over
come with a fit of coughing. He helped her to sit upright and patted her back
as she tried to regain control of her failing lungs. Finally he eased her
back, his stomach knotting as he noticed how pale she was and how hard she was
working to draw each breath.
Then tilting his head slightly, "Is it time for your pills? Are you
hurting? Do you need some water?" He asked, reaching for her glass on the bedside table and frowning when he discovered it was empty.
"Baby, I'm fine really, but some water would be nice." She rasped, as she
struggled for a decent breath.
Happy to be of some assistance, Mark ran from the room for water. He was so
proud of himself for his speedy return, and for not making a mess by
sloshing water all over his mom's beloved wooden floors, that he didn't notice his mom's state as he reentered her room. "Here you go mom...nice and cold, just the way you like it." He held out the glass, and shifted his attention from it to his mom....she didn't move. "Mom?....Mom?....Mama?"
Present
Light shimmered off of the lone tear that fell from his brimming eyes as
Hardcastle's and his mom's words melded together and echoed through his troubled mind. "I'm fine." And panic set in. He couldn't lose another parent...he just couldn't.
End.
Ok...I almost started crying while writing this. Not good.
