Nick steps back, breaking the embrace of his friend.
Jonathan wraps an arm around his shoulder and points at the coffee house behind them. "How about we go inside, before we freeze our bums off?"
Nick smiles and allows the other man to drag him physically inside the cafe. "So, what kind of trouble are you in, Jonathan?"
"Ouch, that hurts me." The other man makes a pained face and sits down. "You never use to be so cruel. You've changed Nicholas."
"Ha ha. When did you get out of prison?"
"Oh, cut straight to it, don't you?" He studies Nick for a moment, the tenseness disturbing his normally relaxed nature. "A few months ago, how did you know?"
"I have my sources. Been putting your skills to use?"
"Well yes, actually but nothing like you're suggesting. I got out on parole, conditional parole."
"What are the conditions of the 'parole' ?"
"I have to do some work for some people."
Nick shifted restlessly in his chair. "Come on Jonathan spill it, what kind of work. I don't have all day to sit around disucssing your criminal activities."
"You wound me Nicholas." Jonathan sighs as the serious look on Nick's face. "Secretive work Nick, very secreative."
Nick leans in a little. "How secreative?" Jonathan smiles, his blue eyes catching Nick's as the waitress steps up for their order. "Two, coffees please." The waitress nods and begins to walk away but Jonathan speaks up.
"Do bring some of those sweet cakes, what are they called?"
"Donughts?"
"No, danish, yes, that's it. Two ooey, gooey danish."
Nick shakes his head and leans back against the wall in the booth. It had been almost seven years since he had spent any length of time with his friend Jonathan. He'd pop up from time to time, always leaving trouble in his wake.
"Now, where were we, oh yes, the work. Nicholas, it's so secretive, I don't even know who I work for."
"Yeah, right..."
"I'm not kidding Nick, that's why I called. I need your help."
"Of course you do, why else would you call." Nick tenses as Jonathan's hand touches his.
"I'm serious. This is big and I need your, 'kind' of help." Jonathan sits back and studies Nick for a moment before continuing. "My 'group' is investigating the human cloning that's been going on in several labs across the US. There's been a bit of a problem."
"Okay, first of all. How did you get my number at the Luna foundation? Second who is this 'group'? And Third, no we'll wait until you've answered the others first."
The waitress steps up again and puts the cups in front of the two men, sliding a plate full of apple danish in front of Jonathan. He smiles and waits for her to leave. "One, I have my sources as well, two the group is me, a man named, Marcus and a beautiful young thing, named Amanda."
"So you're like this criminal ring that needs me to break into something or be a mercenary, right? Not intrested." Nick begins to stand but Jonathan grabs his hand and pulls him back into the booth.
"Wait, no. I told you I work for a government agency, just not one I can reveal. It's legal Nicholas I swear to you."
"Say I believe you, which is doubtful with your record. What do you want from me?"
"Perhaps I should explain what's happened first. "Well, my partners have come down with a virus of sorts and are quite useless at the moment. Nicholas, do you anything about cloning?" He shakes his head as Nick does. "Well, your government has been 'cloning' humans for almost five years now. The main the problem with cloning humans is that, they're born without any, defining human traits. More like drones if you would. Nothing that makes them 'uniquely' human, besides their form, of course. See what I mean?"
"Yeah, I guess. Kind of hard to replicate a person's 'being'. But what does this have to do with me?"
"There've been reports, high up reports, that several clones have developed 'personalities' if you would. And these personalities 't very friendly. Matter of fact, they've killed several researchers and escaped."
"So you want me to do what, track them down, kill em."
"No, I want your help in getting inside the laboratory. Help me find out what's happening, from the inside."
Nick takes a long sip of his coffee and considers what Jonathan is saying. "Couldn't the clones just be exhibiting the traits of their original donor? Just the bad side, maybe?"
"The man doesn't think so."
"The man?"
"My boss perse. Do you really think that's what could be happening?"
"I don't know, but I wouldn't rule it out."
"All right, but will you help me get in, find out what is going on?" Johanthan nudges Nick's arm until the other man smiles. "Be like ole times, you and I wreaking havoc on an unsuspecting world."
"No havoc, I'm a different person now. A bit more reserved. Lot less trouble that way." The tension in his gut makes a stiff knot and twists. The last thing he wanted was Derek hearing about his wilder days. "I can get a computer link to this lab, but I gotta know some things first."
"Sure Nicholas," Jonathan gripes Nick's hand and squeezes. "Anything you need."
Derek takes a deep breath as he enters the kitchen. Philip pauses in his task of building a sandwich and watches Derek for a moment. "Philip, I'm sorry about before."
"Don' worry about it. Not like I had planned it or anything."
"I know and I do apologize." The silence hangs between them for a long moment then Derek clears his throat. "I'm going for a walk. Would you..." He paused to answer the phone near his hand. "Derek Rayne."
/Derek, it's Nick./
"Yes Nick, what can I do for you?"
/I need to bring a friend to the house, wondered if it would be okay with you./
"What kind of friend?"
/A friend-friend, what other kind is there?/
"Is this friend, someone you can trust?"
/Yes Derek./
"Yes, you may bring our 'friend' out to the island, it'll be dark soon. Be careful."
/As always, boss man./
"Okay, we're out of here." Nick tosses a ten on the table and stands up. "Want me to drive?"
"Well, since my ride was a large silver bus, I guess we should take your sporty little thing."
"You're on."
Nick starts the car as Jonathan tosses his bag in the back. "So tell me Nicholas, why did you have to get permission to bring me home. Got someone waiting that I don't know about?" Jonathan leans against the door at the evil looks Nick shoots him. "Sorry, didn't mean that literally, you know."
"Yeah, I know. But I work for the Luna foundation and Angel Island is like a foretress. I sort of combine home and work, so it's best I make sure it's okay with the boss."
"Guess he runs a tight ship aye? Still taking orders I see."
"Yeah well, Derek's not so bad and besides it's a good organization. We do a lot of charity work, research and stuff like that." Nick pulls up to the harbor and parks his car. "Come on, flying from here."
"Flying? Are you serious?" Jonathan follows Nick to the chopper. "This is yours?"
"Anytime I want. Get in." Nick takes his bag and tosses it behind the seat. He shuts the door and gets in the pilot's seat. He points to the headphones.
"I remember." Jonathan slips them on and straps in. "This 'Luna Foundation', it's got a lot of cash, yes?"
"Get those thoughts out of your head." Jonathan flashes one of his best 'who me' smiles and Nick shakes his head.
"Nick is bringing a friend out to the island, see that they're accomidated when they get here."
"What kind of friend?" Philip asks, finishing his sandwich. Noting the dark look that crosses Derek's face.
"Just make 'whoever' at home would you. I'm going for a walk."
Philip nods and picks up his sandwich. He smiles to himself. Nick sure could push Derek's buttons anytime he felt like it and the man would take it.
Nick landed the chopper on the lawn a few minutes later, he and Jonathan made their way up to the house and inside. Philip greets them at the door.
"I'm told to make you feel at home and welcome you to Angel Island."
Nick shoots Philip a strange looks and glances back at Jonathan. "Philip this is Jonathan Vance, Jonathan, Philip Callaghan."
Jonathan grasps the hand that Philip extends and shakes it. "Nice to meet you Philip."
"Will you be staying with us long?" Philip takes a step back as Nick steps between them.
"He's just a friend Philip, not one of your rescuees, back off. Where's Derek?"
"You know you can be very immature sometimes Nick. Derek's out, walking somewhere, trying to get his mind off his problems." With that Philip stalks off up stairs.
"What was that about?" Nick shakes his head and stares at Jonathan.
"Don't even ask."
"You two were lovers, right?"
"Jonathan!"
"Sorry. Couldn't help but notice the tension, the room was thick with it." Nick sighs.
"Come on, I'll fix you something to eat and get started on the computer."
"Oh goody, you're cooking. I could just 'die'."
Nick laughs and heads off to the kitchen. The two friends eat and chat then Nick shows Jonathan to the front room.
"I can't come with you to use the computer? Why on Earth not?"
"Cause, I said so. I don't think the boss would like me letting you in upstairs. Just wait here, I'll hurry."
Jonathan sits down heavily on the couch and gets comfortable. "What, no television."
"Look you want to wait up in my room, that's fine."
"No, no, I'm fine. I'll enertain myself down here."
Nick heads for the door but pauses. "Don't touch anything."
"Really Nick, you're being a bit, stogy now aren't you." Jonathan flicks his hair from his shoulder in a offended gesture.
"Just don't, okay."
Jonathan rolls his eyes and nods. "I'll behave."
Jonathan smiles as Nick finally leaves the room. Of course he would stay out of trouble. What trouble could a art thief get into in a place such as this? He looks around the room, noting the fine pieces of art and rubs his hands together. "Holy grail time."
His wanderings take him through most of the lower level of the house. He stops in large living area, spaciously decorated. Spotting a painting of particular interest, he studies it for a while.
"It's a Monet."
Jonathan turns to see a very distinguished looking older man. He stretches a little, trying to determine his height, 6.1 no 6.2. Those amber eyes must be hazel, changing with his moods. The chiseled features were handsome, very handsome for someone with gray streaked hair. The jeans and button down shirt made him look years younger than his actual age, Jonathan thought. The stranger smiles and a sudden warmth fills him. He shakes himself a bit and looks away. He clears his throat, finding his voice at last. "Monet, yes. 'Garden at Saint-Adresse, if I'm not mistaken."
"Yes, it is, I'm impressed.." Derek extended his hand. "Derek Rayne, and you are?"
"Jonathan, Jonathan Vance. I'm a friend of Nicholas, we just got in from the mainland. You know this painting over here, is it Kendinsky?"
"Yes, where did you learn so much about art?"
"I was educated abroad, my parents felt it best to provide a boarding school atmosphere while they went about their lives."
"Well, you seem to have an eye for art." Derek smiles at the younger man. "How is it you know Mr. Boyle?"
"Mr. Boyle and I became friends after I joined my parents here in the states. We haven't seen any other in years, so I thought I'd look him up."
"Where is your host?"
"Right here?" Nick smiles at Derek as he comes in. "Doing some research, hope you don't mind." Nick's eyes roll at the look on Derek's face.
"What kind of research?"
"Jonathan asked me to look something up for him. That's not a problem is it?"
"Would you excuse us?" Derek smiles at Jonathan and takes Nick's arm and leads him away. "What kind of research requires the Luna Foundation's computers?"
"Derek it's nothing that sinister" Nick considers telling him about the clones, but decides against it, for the moment. "It's nothing he couldn't do a the library I suppose, but he came to me. Is this a problem?"
Derek shakes his head. "No, I'm sorry. You know how I feel about letting strangers onto the island."
"He's not a stranger Derek, he's my friend and yes, I trust him."
Derek sighs, the last thing he wanted was to fight with Nick. The anger present in the younger man's voice made him cringe. "Fine."
Jonathan turns from the painting as Nick steps up beside him. "Where did your friend go?"
"Friend? Oh Derek, he's the boss."
"Don't lie Nick, there's something there. I can see it in your eyes, you know they say that the eyes are the window to the..." Jonathan thought better of completing his sentence. "Nevermind. What did you find out."
Nick sits down on the sofa and spreads out the paper before them. "This would be easier with the computer screens, but..."
"The organization issued a voluntary five year moratorium on cloning human beings, where "cloning human beings" is defined as the duplication of an existing or previously existing human being by transferring the nucleus of a differentiated, somatic cell into an enucleated human oocyte, and implanting the resulting product for intrauterine gestation and subsequent birth." Jonathan took a deep breath and handed the paper to Nick. "This is it, this is the one. Bethesda, we've got to get in there."
"Wait a minute. I said I could help with the computer stuff. Not going into the lab Jon, that's nuts."
"No, it's not. You don't understand Nicholas this is, this is..."
"UnGodly."
Jonathan turns to see Derek standing there. "Yes, exactly. We must get inside, find out what went wrong with the procedure."
"What exactly is it that you're trying to do Jonathan?" Derek asks.
Jonathan looks from Derek to Nick. Nick shrugs and Jonathan nods. "They're already cloning humans."
"I thought that kind of technology wasn't, 'quite' ready."
"Yes, that's what the government wants the general public to believe. But, Dr. Seed has already progressed to developing fully functional humans, drone that is. The recent events has us convinced that he's gone a step beyond that. Either by implanting a personality matrix, like a computer or something more sinister."
"Nick, why didn't you tell me this was why Jonathan came here?"
"I wasn't sure this was something you wanted to get involved in."
"Well I think it might be, come on upstairs, we'll have a look." Derek turns around to Philip waiting on him. He takes the paper from Philip and reads over it.
"We'll go on." Nick walks past Derek.
"Wait." Derek's face is dark. "Who is it that you work for Mr. Vance?"
"As I told Nick, I'm not really sure. Just..."
"Well, from what I've seen of your history. I don't think it's anyone the Luna Foundation would want to be involved with and I'll have to ask you to leave."
"Derek." Nick steps between him and Jonathan. "This is not fair, that is an old report, Jonathan's changed."
"Has he Nick? How long has it been since you've seen him?" Nick glances back at Jonathan. "Take him off the Island Nick, as soon as possible."
"It'll have to wait until morning." Derek takes a deep breath and nods.
"Fine, but first thing..."
"I know!"
Nick takes Jonathan by the arm and leads him up to his bedroom.
"Man, I feel like I just got caught necking in the back seat of a car. I could feel the 'discust' drip off his words."
"I'm sorry, Derek is very..."
"Stogy?" Nick smiles as Jonathan lies back across his bed. "And I thought I was beginning to like him, he does has wonderful taste in art."
"Don't Jonathan."
"Don't what?" Nick tosses a book at him.
"Don't go there."
"Oh, I see." Jonathan smiles and licks his lips, chuckling to himself. "So, what's between you two?"
"Nothing. I said don't."
Nick sits down on the bed beside him. "I seem to have hit a nerve. Here," He scoots over and pulls Nick around until he can reach his shoulders. "This might help." He begins massaging Nick's shoulder until the other man growls a little. "Too rough?"
"No, too good. Come on, I'll find you a bed for tonight."
"What's wrong with this one?" Nick shakes his head and hauls his friend up. "Come on Nicholas, you haven't become a prude, have you?"
"No, but I'm not interested in being the object of your lust tonight. Come on."
"Oh, but you're so beautiful Nicholas, even more so than before." He steps close and brushes the back of his hand along Nick's cheek. "What is it they say, you've become more beautiful with age." He leans in and brushes his lips against Nick's. No resistance and he presses more, dipping his tongue into his friend's mouth, tasting, exploring the warm recesses.
Nick finishes the kiss and and takes a deep breath. "I can't do this."
"Why not? It was never a problem before, what's changed?" Jonathan forces Nick to meet his eyes, seeing the sadness there he lets him go. "Who's hurt you?"
Nick shakes his head and closes his eyes. "It's complicated, you can stay here tonight if you want, but I can't promise you anything Jonathan."
"You've offered me more than I can ask for Nicholas, your friendship, conversation and the warmth of your body. Nothing has to happen, let's just be together, okay?" Nick nods and Jonathan draws him into another embrace, holding and caressing the trembling figure. "I wish you'd tell me what's happened."
"It's late, let's get some sleep."
They both undress in silence. Nick climbing into bed in his underwear, Jonathan in nothing. Nick sighs as the warm body glides against his. "Am I on the wrong side?"
"It doesn't matter, just go to sleep." Nick closes his eyes as Jonathan leans in and kisses his lips briefly.
"Good night, Nicholas."
Jonathan turns away from him and pulls the covers up around his neck.
Nick lies there, watching him. The amber locks of hair, tossed back on the pillow. Nick turns on his side and pulls Jonathan back against him. They had been lovers for two years, but so long ago. Before the Legacy, before the Seals, before either knew what they wanted from life. His fingers traced the smooth stomach and hips. He knew every line of this man's body. Knew it better than he knew Derek's. Jonathan turns in his arms and looks into his eyes. Their lips find each other and their bodies press together. Long passionate kisses leave Nick breathless, but he pushes back. "Wait, wait a minute."
"What?"
"You've been gone a long time, have you..."
"I'm clean Nicholas. No sex in over a year, not by choice. I've been out of prison four months and the people that recruited me made sure I was tested for everything." Nick raises an eyebrow. "They drew so much blood, I thought I'd turn into a sprinkler." Nick laughs.
Nick lowers his head. "Philip."
"I knew it. There was something about the way he looked at you. When did you break up."
"It wasn't like that, it was just once. He use to be a priest and left the church, it's a long story."
"So, he's clean, Derek," Nick nods. "Is clean, so you're clean and I'm clean and..."
"You're talking too much." Nick captures his lips and presses their bodies together again, this time taking charge of the situation and forcing Jonathan's thigh up over his. He works his way down the pale neck and suckles where it meets the shoulder.
Jonathan moans as Nick's hands work his body. He opens to the fingers as they brush across his body's entrance. Only Nick could make him want this kind of sex. No other boy, man or woman could make him scream like Nick could. He reaches between their bodies and squeezes Nick's cock, stroking and fondling the thick shaft. He groans as Nick pulls away a bit.
"Just a sec." Nick retrieves the lube from the night stand and settles back down.
"Prepared aren't you?" He smiles as Nick wiggles his eyebrows. The cool gel makes him tense a bit, but he soon relaxes as allows a finger deep inside his body. "Oh yes Nicholas, more."
Nick presses two fingers inside Jonathan's ass, watching as his friend pushed his onto them with each thrust. He works his way down until he's nose to cock with Jonathan's erection. He opens his mouth and allows it entry. His eyes never leave Jonathan's face. The taunt throat, head tossed back in passion, wild hair sprawled around the pillow. He clasps the hand that is presented to him, lacing their fingers together like they had done so many times before. He lets the cock slip form his lips and scoots up, forcing Jonathan's hips up, his thighs around his waist. "Are you ready for me Jonny boy?"
"If you don't do it soon, I'll die." Jonathan reaches down and strokes his cock in quick, jerky motions as Nick slides his cock between his ass cheeks. A moment of stillness and Nick slides inside of him. He cringes in pain for a brief moment, then Nick moves, sliding more of his cock deep inside his body. He wants to scream, faster, more, now. But he knows Nick, knows that he needs this adjustment time to settle his body, calm the rushing wave that threatens to overtake him, if he moves too fast. So he waits and Nick moves again, so slowly that it's maddening. "Please Nicholas, more, I need to feel you."
Nick pauses and takes a deep breath. His eyes meet Jonathan's and he's transported back in time. Years hadn't separated the once, close friends. He was there in Jonathan's bedroom, in his bed, fucking him for all he was worth. Then it happened in one quick flash the present floods back as someone knocks on the bedroom door. "Shit." It was barely a whisper, loud enough for only Jonathan to hear. He had locked the door, hadn't he? "Who is it?"
"Derek."
"Oh man," Again low. "What do you want, I was sleeping."
"What room did you put your friend Jonathan in, I wanted to check on him before I turned in."
"He's fine Derek, he's not going to take any of your precious art pieces, go on to bed."
"Which room Nick?" Derek yells through the door.
"I thought I'd keep an extra eye on him."
"Yes?"
"He's here...with me." Nick sighs at the long silence, wishing at that point he could just disappear from the face of the earth. Then finally, after several seconds.
"I see."
Nick bows his head and slumps forward, covering Jonathan's body. The was little hope of recovering their relationship now, he had just driven the wedge deeper.
Derek placed a hand on the door and closed his eyes. A single tear escaped and he let it fall. He knew in his heart that he had truly, lost Nick.
Inside the room Nick rolls away from Jonathan and hugs himself.
"Nick, what's going on?" Jonathan gathers him close. "Tell me."
"I've lost him for good this time."
"Who, Derek?"
"Yes, he'll never forgive me for this."
"For us?" Nick nods and Jonathan frowns. "I'm sorry Nicholas. You should have told me you two were still involved." Jonathan pulls away and heads into the bathroom.
Nick climbs off the bed and follows him in, joining him in the shower. They shower quickly and head back to the bedroom where Jonathan dresses.
"What are you doing?"
"Well, it's pretty obvious, I should leave."
"No, wait. Sit down." They sit down together on the bed and Nick takes Jonathan's hand. "Listen. I screwed up okay. I was attracted to someone and I told Derek and he said I should 'do what I had to do'."
"Sounds like he just didn't want to lose you."
"Yeah, well that little encounter left my head a little off and I ended up hurting Derek because of it."
"How?"
Nick stands up and walks around the room. "You and I when we were together, it went both ways and I didn't have a problem with that."
"Well, you did at first."
"Okay so...with Derek, I've always been..."
"Bottom?"
"Yeah, he's so kind and gentle and so damn, hot Jonathan. You just don't know him. My skin burns when he touches me, I just wanted to be everything to him. And when Philip kissed me... I couldn't handle what I felt for him and still love Derek. It was eating me up inside and when I finally told Derek, he understood and told me to go to Philip and do whatever I had to, as long as I came back to him."
"And?"
"I couldn't handle letting Philip... I mean afterwards, I lost it. I couldn't let Derek touch me that way and I guess I vented my pain toward him and he got tired of it."
Jonathan pulls him close. "I'm sorry. Do you still love him?"
"Are you kidding, I don't like spending a day away from him. He loves me through what ever crazy shit I do, he doesn't judge me or condemn me when I'm wrong." Nick laughs a bit and stands up. "He wants to protect me, which is a laugh, cause I'm the guy with the gun. He understood and didn't question when I told him about what my father use to do. He believed me Jonathan, no convincing, no accusing. He's always been there for me and now I've screwed the whole thing up."
"Have you ever tried telling him this? Don't get me wrong Nicholas, I'd rather have you to myself, but if you loved me like that, I'd forgive you anything."
Nick allows himself to be hugged by his friend. "Now, how about you slip through that door and tell that beautiful, older man, exactly how you feel. Cause if you don't, I'll do it for you."
"No you won't either." Nick looks at him sternly and Jonathan begins nodding and saying yes, over and over again.
"I will Nicholas, go on."
Nick gets up and heads out the door. He stops in front of Derek's door and knocks. After a few moments the door opens and Derek looks up from a book. "Yes?"
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" Derek nods and lets him in the room. "I think I should explain about earlier."
"What? Why the young man is sleeping in your bed, no need. I get the picture Nick."
"No, about why I didn't tell you about who he was, his past."
"That's quite obvious, you didn't want me to know you were bringing a convicted criminal to the island. An art thief of all things."
"Derek wait. I wanted you to give him a chance before you started judging him. You liked him until you read that stupid report. He's changed Derek, he works for the government agency that has him by the balls...."
"They're not the only ones."
"Can we make this about work and not about us."
"What us? There is no us. You've made damn sure of that, haven't you." Derek saw the pain in Nick's face, but refused to let himself be swayed by it. "I want him gone tomorrow. You can see him 'off' the island, but don't bring him here again." Nick turns and heads for the door. "Nick," Nick stops and looks back at him, the anger boiling just below the surface. "Don't compromise the Legacy for him."
Nick slams the door to his room as hard as he can. "Let's get out of here."
"How?"
"We're taking the boat."
The next morning Derek is going through some things on the computer when Philip and Alex come into the control room. "Good morning Derek, how was your day off?" She draws back a step at the evil look on Derek's face. "Sorry I asked."
Philip hands Derek a cup of coffee. "Wasn't that wha' Nick and his friend were researching yesterday?"
"Yes, it appears there was some validity to the young man's statements." Derek frowns at the bitterness of the coffee and sits it down. "Philip, I want you to see what you can dig up on Jonathan Vance and his 'associates'. Alex, I want you to get a line to the D.C. house, find out what they know about this cloning business and Dr. Seed."
"You got it. Where's Nick and who's Jonathan?" The silence hangs in the room as Philip looks from her to Derek.
"Nick's gone." They both look at Derek. "He turned the security system off and took the Angel Wing late last night. He could be anywhere."
"Not anywhere, I bet Maryland from the looks of the research information tha' Nick collected." Philip hands Derek several printouts.
"Good, Alex make sure you let the D.C. house know. Tell them to alert us if he shows up."
"Okay, where are you going?" Alex asks, as she begins punching up the information on the keyboard.
"I'm taking the ferry to the docks. I'm sure the Angel Wing is there. And to see if Nick's car is still there. If not, then I'll know he's gone. I'll also alert Frank."
"What for, if Nick's just gone off with a friend, then..."
"Alex all I want is to find him. Frank will let me know if he sees him in the area, if not then we have a good idea where he's headed."
Derek punches a button that brings us a newspaper article.
Bethesda, MD (1/16/98)- Depending on your view, human cloning research could lead to new infertility treatments or tough times for science funding. Physicist Richard Seed's quest to clone humans has accelerated the debate on the moral and ethical issues of cloning, bringing strong reactions from a wide range of scientists and politicians.
He sighs and heads through the hologram, Philip close behind him. "Derek." Derek stops after a few paces and Philip catches up. "What happened?" Derek shakes his head, he allows the former-priest to take his hand. "I'm here if you need anything, ya know tha'." Derek nods and pulls Philip close. "Be careful." Derek pulls back and stares into Philip's eyes for a long moment. He leans forward and their lips touch briefly. A silent nod and both men go about their assigned duties.
"This place is huge." Jonathan crouched low behind Nick as the ex-SEAL, made his way around the perimeter.
"Don't touch, it's hot."
"What?" Jonathan reaches out his hand to balance himself about the same time. Nick grabs his arm and pushes him backwards.
"Look Jonathan, if you want my help with this, stay behind me, don't touch anything."
"Look Nick, I'm not an amateur burglar that you can push around. Stop treating me like a child."
Nick was set to argue the opposite when a light was flashed above their heads. He pushes Jonathan to the ground and covers his mouth with a hand. Using the other to press a finger to his own lips. Once the light has safely passed over them he glances up and around. "Come on."
"No, wait. Let's go back to the hotel. Wait a while longer." Nick stares at him for a long moment.
"Why would we do that? The cover is perfect. Either we go in now, or we don't go in at all." Nick starts forward but Jonathan's hand is on him instantly.
"Please Nick, let's wait. Something doesn't feel right." Jonathan relaxes as Nick pulls back and they head the way they had come.
Once they make it back through the thick trees to the road, Nick stops and turns to his friend. "Now, you want me to tell me what the hell's going on?"
"I just a got a bad feeling, that's all. Come on, let's get back to the motel before anyone spots us." He tugs on Nick's jacket sleeve pulling him along the road.
Half an hour later they arrive at the motel. The sun was just beginning to come up over the city. Nick collapses on the bed as they as they get inside the room. "I'm exhausted."
"Yes, but you have all that wonderful makeup on your face." Jonathan watches as Nick wipes some of the black paint off with his fingers.
"Yeah, guess I should shower." He hauls his tired body up and heads into the bathroom. "Great. Shower's broken. Guess it'll have to be a bath."
Jonathan has curled himself into a ball on the bed. The pain in his head getting worse and worse. He pulls himself up, wiping his face and heads into the bathroom. Nick as just finished scrubbing the camouflage paint off his face and was soaping up the rag again. "Room for two?" Nick looks up as Jonathan approaches the tub. In a quick motion Jonathan's shirt is pulled from his body and dropped on the floor. The glitter of gold, bounces against his throat and chest. The pale chest and stomach, pert nipples that resembled pebbles, nothing more, the man was very attractive. He pushed down the longing and looked away.
"Not quite, but I'll be finished in a bit."
"Well, what I really need is to wash this sweaty hair, do you mind?" Jonathan sinks to the floor and leans his head back over the tub.
Nick splashes water up over his friend's head, wetting the matted waves and curls. He gently massages the shampoo in as Jonathan smiles up at him. "God Jon, it's like those years never happened." He rinses as Jonathan leans further back. "Done." With that he watches as Jonathan stands up, slinging his hair forward and drying it lightly with a towel. Then the other man slips out of his jeans and underwear and steps into the tub. He jumps as bit as the cool droplets of water streaming down Jonathan's chest, splash against his face. Jonathan's cock was half hard and pointed at Nick. Without thinking Nick runs his fingers along the shaft, caresses the tight ball sac and scoots further back. Jonathan's legs open for him and he skirts a finger over the opening, smiling at the hiss that escapes his lover's lips. Another second and his mouth covers Jonathan's hardness, sucking in the length and sliding a finger between the relaxed muscles of his ass. Fingers slide through his hair, urging him on. Nick reaches beneath himself and and tries to remove the tub stopper. His fingers become insistent, stretching and opening his friend's body. Three and Jonathan is trembling and whimpering above him. He pulls back off the rock hard cock and turns his lover around, forcing him down, over the edge of the tub. Finding nothing on hand for lubricant, he strokes Jonathan until he screams, signalling his release. He captures most of his essence and coats his cock with the sticky substance. He meets little resistance as he forces his cock inside the tight channel. Jonathan bucks against him, forcing him deeper. Nick laughs a bit at the craziness of it all. The neon sign flashing just outside the window, the sounds of the water slapping their thighs, Jonathan begging to be taken harder, faster. Nick complies, slamming with all his strength into his lover. His hand tangled securely in the wet, amber curls, the time passes slowly. The tight channel, squeezing and milking his cock, the loud moans, groans and grunts, the sleek, hard body moving beneath him, in perfect rhythm, wanting him, only him. His face contorts into a mixture of pain and release as his orgasm begins, his thrusts increase and deepen, sending the other man flat against the slanted tub. For all he's worth he forces the contact, pumping and pumping until every ounce, every drop, of semen has fled his body and coated the inside of his lover. Leaving his mark once more on the beautiful man beneath him. No time had passed since they first fell together as teenagers, laughing and playing until the desire became evident. It was barely three days since his eighteenth birthday and he and Jonathan were alone at Jonathan's house. In the bathroom, having sex, experimenting and playing. Too young to care about the outside world and all the struggles and heartaches to come. Suddenly the man beneath him moans and pushes back. The water has turned cold and his limp cock slides free of his warm home. For a long moment he still doesn't move, breathing in the scent of his closest friend, recovering from the high.
"We're beginning to prune I believe, Nicholas." Jonathan straightens his back as Nick moves away and sloshes his legs out of the water. He follows the subdued form into the bedroom and climbs on the bed beside him. Pulling the blanket from the other bed, he covers them both and they drift off to sleep.
Nick stirs from his sleep as a warm intruder pressing between his ass cheeks. He moves his thigh up, allowing the intimate contact. Derek's fingers were wider than a lot of men's and they always prepared him well for the upcoming penetration. Today they seemed small, but it didn't matter, it presses against his gland and he gasps, pressing back, wanting the contact again. Two fingers and he's urged to his stomach, his thighs kissed as they part. A shiver of anticipation runs through him and he opens himself to his lover. Warm, slickness against his opening and he moans. A moment of stillness and a blunt, hardness is pressing into him. Burning, burning, then he breaths, adjusting to the intruder filling his body. He signals his approval by thrusting back and is rewarded by more of the length slipping inside him. Not wide, not painful, but long and sleek, more and more until the soft curls bounce against his ass and the smell of shampoo fills his nostrils. Warm, wet kisses on his shoulders and neck, cheek and eye. A sound, like purring at his ear. Then his lover moves, pulling back almost all the way and plunges forward, gently, smoothly, slowly until he feels the bump of his balls against his own. His hips are pulled up and the intruder goes deeper, almost painfully deep. A slight whimper escapes his lips and his lover stops, sensing his discomfort. He relaxes as the thrusts are no longer as deep, but still satisfying.
For long minutes the two rock together as the storm builds inside. Nick's hand reaches his own cock and pumps it as the cock up his ass plunders his body, raking over the delicate gland on each withdrawal. His breath comes in pants as his climax approaches.
Jonathan pulls back on Nick's hips, thrusting his cock deep inside the willing body. He cries out Nick's name as he climaxes, the pain in his mind finally subsiding. He presses the sweaty man beneath him flat and they roll to their sides. "Oh God, Nicholas, it has been so long. I've missed you."
Nick wanted to pull away, tell him that he was dreaming of Derek, but he couldn't. He allowed Jonathan to cuddle up to him as their orgasms subside and their bodies cool from the passion. He closed his eyes. He could see Derek standing on the shore, reaching his hand out to him, but the boat kept drifting further and further away, the depth of ocean between them becoming too wide for either of them to navigate.
He woke a few hours later to the sound of Jonathan's voice. The door shut and gets to his elbows. "What's going on?"
"Dinner, I ordered in." Jonathan sat the brown bag down on the bed beside Nick. "Are you all right, you've been asleep for hours."
"Yeah, just more tired than I thought, I guess."
"Well, having mind blowing sex can do that to a person."
Nick chuckles and pulls himself into a sitting position. "Yeah, but you always had three times my energy level, never could figure that out."
"It's my metabolism, I suppose. That's why I got up, starved to death, simply had to get food." With that he dives onto the bed, covering Nick's body. He leans in to kiss him, but Nick turns his head away. "What's wrong? Don't tell me you're still hung up on Derek?"
"I'm not 'hung' up on Derek." Nick gets up and pulls on his underwear. "I'm in love with Derek."
Jonathan raised an eye brow and winked one of his blue eyes. "Couldn't have proved that by me, a bit ago."
"Don't."
"Ohh, guess it was a one 'day' stand then, huh? I do so hate, being used."
Nick sits down beside him. "Don't say that. You and I have history, but we've never been in love."
"How can you say that Nicholas. I've always loved you."
"I love you too, but not like that."
"Not 'like that'. Hmm, don't see the difference."
"You know what I mean, one moment you'd be there with me, the next moment you'd be chasing a skirt down the road."
"I can't help it, if I appreciate the female form."
Nick leans back against Jonathan's chest. "I never had a problem with the female form either. It's just sex came easier with you."
"And better." Jonathan wraps his arms around Nick's chest and hugs him. "Come on, let's eat. Dr. Seed will be needing our attention soon. It's already late."
Derek slams his fist into the computer desk, rattling Philip's coffee, which he quickly rescues.
"We should be out there, finding him. Not sitting here with our hands tied."
"There haven't been any reports that confirmed he's left the city or that he's in Maryland. Until something breaks Derek, there's not a lot we can do." Alex scoots her chair a little further away from Derek, the anger in his face, compounded by his lack of sleep, gave him an evil look.
"You're not doing enough then. He's one man, he can't just disappear off the face of the planet without someone..."
"Derek!" Philip takes a deep breath as his friend and boss finally looks his way. "Nick was a SEAL, he 'can' disappear if he wants to, besides maybe he just needs some time to himself."
"He's with Vance, he's in danger don't you see that?" Alex and Philip look at each other and Philip nods for Alex to leave. "Where are you going?" Derek steps toward Alex, but is cut off as Philip steps into his path.
"Derek, let's talk."
"I don't need to talk. I need someone here to run this blasted computer and tell me where Nick is." Derek's voice carries down the hall as Alex hurries away.
"The computer can't give us any information it doesn't have." Philip grabs Derek by the arms. "No matter how badly we want it. Nick will turn up, when he's ready."
Derek shoves him back and he hits the desk hard with his arm. He grabs his arm and takes a deep breath. "Look, I know what you're feeing, but driving yourself crazy with jealousy and this isn't the answer."
"Jealous, jealous of whom, Jonathan?" Philip nods and Derek chuckles."Why would I be jealous of that little imp?"
"Because he's with Nick and you're not." Philip rubs his arm and shakes it out.
"Are you all right?" Derek steps forward and touches his arm.
"Yes, but I'll thank you not to take out your anger on me." Philip smiles and squeezes Derek's hand. "Come on, let's get your something to eat."
"What if something comes up..."
"Alex will yell for us, I'm sure." He steers Derek through the hologram and down the stairs. They meet Alex in the kitchen and she agrees to monitor the feeds while Derek relaxes. She pulls Philip to the side as Derek fixes himself a cup of coffee.
"This is getting bad Philip, we've got to find Nick."
"I know, just keep an eye out for anything. I'll stay with him, make he gets something to eat."
Alex nods and starts to head down the hall. "Philip?"
"Yes?"
"Is there something going on that I don't know about? I mean, I know Nick and Derek had a fight and they're not back together right now, but..."
"But?"
"I could have sworn I saw him," She raises her eyes to meet Philip's.
"I thought he kissed you yesteday."
Philip swallowed hard and shoved his hands in his pockets. "It's a long story." He saw the anger building in Alex's eyes. And knowing how she felt about Nick and Derek, he was in for a lot of trouble should she find out the whole truth.
"Did he leave Nick for you?" Philip shakes his head over and over again.
"Nothing like that. It was something that went wrong between them, that's all."
"Philip?" Philip turns to see Derek heading back toward them.
"I better stay close, see that he eats something."
"You do that, but not too close." Philip nods and hurries to meet Derek in the kitchen.
Alex's mind is running at a hundred thoughts a minute. How could Derek kiss Philip and what did Philip have to do with their breakup? Something he said, it was something between them. Was that something Philip? She sat down at the console and started searching for Nick again. Only he could give her the answers she was searching for.
Around nine, Philip relieved Alex in the control room. There had been nothing on the feed all day about Nick or Jonathan. It was well after midnight now and Philip's eyes were growing heavy. He jumps as fingers dig into the taunt muscles of his shoulders. He looks up to see Derek in his p.j.'s and robe smiling down at him. He relaxed into the touch, as Derek continued the massage.
"I should thank you, a good meal and a nap, it worked wonders." Derek slips down beside him into a chair.
"You look better," Philip's finger trace his left cheek. "Those circles under your eyes are less."
Derek frowns as Philip pulls away abruptly and straightens. "What is it?" Philip avoids his eyes for a few minutes then looks at him.
"It's Nick."
"You found him?"
"No. I just hate what he's doing to you, that's all."
"He's confused right now, nothing more. This..." Derek stands up and walks around the room. "Fling with Jonathan was just to make me jealous, that's all."
"It worked, didn't it?"
"Well, yes, I suppose it did."
"Exactly my point," Philip stands up and walks to Derek. "He pushes every button you have and you let him get away with it. He could say anything, do anything and you'd take him back."
"If that were true, we'd be together now. I have my limits Philip."
"No, I don't think you do. It's one in the morning and where are you, here in the control room pinning away for Nick." Philip's voice was a little harsher than he wanted, but it had it's effect. Derek seemed to be considering his words.
"What are you suggesting Philip, I just stop looking for him, what if he needs help?"
"I'm not saying that. Just give the police time to come up with something. Go to bed, let me go to bed. Let Nick take care of himself for twenty four hours. He'll come back Derek, you know he will." Derek nods and Philip takes his arm. "Come on, let's get you up to bed."
Once in Derek's bedroom Philip helps him out of his robe and turns down the comforter. As he walks back past derek an arm comes out and catches him around the waist. "Stay with me."
"What?" Philip allows Derek to pull him close and his lips part as Derek's mouth press against his. After a long moment he breaks the kiss and steps back. "But I thought..."
"Just lie with me, let me know I'm not alone."
Philip nods, but doesn't get into the bed. "Let me go change, I'll be right back."
Derek slips down beneath the covers and settles down.
/// Nick is moving back, accepting his lover, smiling, saying yes, yes over and over again. ///
He shakes himself as the vision clears and Philip comes back in the room. "Derek?"
"Yes, come on." Derek pulls back the blankets and Philip slides in besides him, wearing only a tee-shirt and plaid boxers. He smiles as the strong body snuggles against his own. Philip settles down and Derek rests his head against the clothed chest. He can't help but run his fingers along the torso and stomach.
"Derek, what are you doing?" He gasps as Derek's hand reaches beneath his shorts and squeezes his cock. "Don't, not right now."
"What if I wanted to Philip, really wanted you." Philip's eyes meet his and he strokes his hardening cock more firmly. "What if I wanted to feel you moving beneath me?" He captures those parted lips, but is pushed back.
"No, Derek. Not like this. Not with your mind so engulfed in Nick. This isn't what you want, I know it's not." Derek's leg traps his and pulls it away from it's mate.
"What if I wanted you?" Derek strokes the hard cock until Philip is bucking into his hand, panting and squirming.
"Derek, don', please
"You don't want me to stop." Derek covers Philip's body with his own,
managing to shove his own pants down in the process. He pushes
Philip's underwear down and their cocks meet. Philip's hands dig into
his shoudler as the heat from their bodies melt into one. Both men
thrust wildly, trying to gain greater contact, forcing the hard flesh
to meet and dance against each other. Derek's mouth is on Philip's
ear, kissing and nibbling. "I want to be inside you Philip." Philip
shakes his head and Derek grabs his face in his hands. "I want you."
"No, not like this.
Derek smiles as Philip becomes responsive and begins moving with him.
His hand finds Philip's sex, hard and weepy and strokes it in time to
his thrusts. Long moments of passionate silence and Derek withdrawls.
Philip meets his eyes and he nods for Philip to turn over. The
younger man complies and he finds his entrance again, pushing his
cock deeper and deeper.
Philip whimpers the first time Derek's balls slap against his, the
realization of his situation hitting him hard. He pushes back again
and Derek speeds up. He grips the sheets as his body is plundered and
dominated over and over again. Derek reaches around and fondles his
cock, stroking it until it responds to his touch. He shudders as
Derek pulls almost all the way out and rubs the mushroom head of his
cock, over the delicate gland, several times until his body responds
and his orgasm takes him by surprise. His own
voice surprises him as
he cries out with the intensity of the orgasm.
He goes limp,
sinking forward onto the cool sheets, Derek is
there,
completing the cycle, filling his bowels with
hot liquid, forcing it
deep inside him. His mind clouds over and he
slips into
unconsciousness.
Derek takes a deep breath and wipes the sweat
from his eyes. He leans
forward and kisses Philip's sweaty back and
neck. "Philip?" He pulls
away gently, letting the clenching body
release his semi-hard cock as
he pulls free. He turns Philip over and
takes his pulse, smiling he
leans down and kisses the slack lips. He pulls
the blankets up over
them body and he snuggles down behind Philip,
pulling his body close.
He falls asleep, listening to the steady
rhythm of the man besides
him.
Jonathan lead the way this time, taking his
time around the
electrified fence. "I think this would be the
best way, come on."
The pair made it to the back without being
detected and Nick cut the
power to the fence. They slip inside and
follow the building
structure
to an unguarded door. "This is too easy." Nick
tries the door
handle. "Locked, okay." He gets down on his
knees and picks the lock.
"Watch for trigger switches, if there's no
guard, it's probably
rigged." Jonathan watches Nick's back as he
checks the door.
"It's clean, come on." Nick pulls the door
open and steps inside.
Jonathan follows close behind him. "No cameras
on this end, we
lucked
up."
"We've got to find the clones. Probably in
research."
Nick shook his head and lowered his voice.
"Computer terminal will
tell us everything we need to know."
"But don't you want to see them?" Nick shot
him a dirty look. "We're
here, we might as well get the tour."
Jonathan steps from behind
Nick
and heads down the hall. "I think it's this
way."
Nick cocks his gun and hurries to catch up to
his friend. "Why do
you
want to see them?"
"I don't know," He flashes a toothy grin and
Nick groans. "Morbid
curiosity I suppose. Can you imagine having
more than one of you?
Think of the possibilities."
Nick grabs Jonathan's sleeve and pulls him
back a step. "Wait a
minute, I thought we were investigating this
Dr. Seed because he was
already trying to clone humans."
"We are."
"Sounds to me like you admire his
accomplishments a little too much.
Don't happen to want to keep them for
yourself, now do you?"
"Nicholas, Moi? Nick turns to head back toward
the door and Jonathan
yells. When Nick turns back, Jonathan is being
held by a large man.
A
gun trained at his throat.
"Drop your weapon."
Nick lets his gun fall to the floor and
Jonathan is pushed toward him.
He pushes the other man behind him and stands
his ground. The guard
walks forward and smiles. Nick considers his
options as the big man
bends to pick up the gun, but a prick at his
neck draws his attention.
"Don't even think about it." His mind clouds
over and he looks round
to see Jonathan holding a hypodermic and
smiling. "Sorry Nicholas."
The world goes black.
"You took your sweet time in getting him to
me." An older man, 40ish
and balding yelled at Jonathan.
"I'm sorry, there were...complications."
"What complications, you didn't run into
anything you didn't know
how
to handle, did you?" Jonathan's eyes fell to
the floor then to the
form strapped to the table. "You've done good,
Three, now why not
get
something to eat. It'll be a while before I
hook him up." The older
man leaves the room, leaving him alone with
the immobile bodies.
Jonathan walks over to the slanted operating
tables. One was tilted
up
slightly and he stares into the face of the
man strapped there.. His
fingers trace the long arms, up to the chest,
his fingers run across
a
nipple and he gasps and strokes his own chest.
The crystal blue eyes
stare down at him, pleading, begging, asking
to be helped.
"He was worth it Jonathan, so much better
than your memories." The
blue eyes follow him as he glances to the
other table. "Now, he'll
be
here with us forever." Jonathan runs a hand
down Nick's chest,
circling his nipples then dips lower and
pushes the sheet down.
"He's
so beautiful, Jonathan." He fondles Nick's
cock until he begins to
whimper and respond. The shaft growing stiffer
with each touch. His
body shudders at the thought of being taken by
this man again. "I'll
never forget you, Nicholas." He leans forward
and licks Nick's
parted
lips, landing open mouth kisses only as the
form beneath him begins
to
twitch and jerk. "So close now, Nicholas." He
goes to the other side
of the table and meets the blue eyes watching
him. He takes Nick's
hard cock between his fingers and strokes him
until Nick's body is
arching off the table. The form on the other
table is thrashing and
screaming around the gag, until tears stain
his cheeks and he relaxes.
Jonathan pauses and pumps with his hand
quickly as Nick's cock
explodes. He leans down and licks the end of
Nick's softening cock.
"Want to taste him?" He swirls a finger in the
thick, gooey liquid
and
licks it. "If it weren't for that damn gag, I
could kiss you, let
you
taste him again." He comes around the table
and stands close to the
strapped down figure. "I know it's what you
want," He rubs the
figure's covered crotch. "I can feel it."
Jonathan closes his
fingers
around the hardening length and smiles. "Yes,
you want him, I know
you
do." Crystal blue eyes meet crystal blue eyes
and the restrained man
cries out around the gag. Jonathan wipes the
tears from his twin's
face. "Don't, I won't let them hurt him. I
promise you that." His
twin
nods and suddenly goes stiff.
"Three, what are you doing?" Jonathan turns to
see Dr. Seed
looming over. He cringes as the doctor grabs
him by the hair and
pulls
him from that part of the lab. "I've told you,
not to play with the
donors, haven't I?"
"Yes, I'm sorry, please." His words are met
with a slap to the face
that knocks him backwards. He lands in a heap,
anger growing in his
mind and heart.
"Problems?" The doctor smiles, seeing the
anger in his creation's
face. "I see." He holds up his watch and
punches a button, Jonathan
screams in pain and holds his head.
"Please, no more."
"I hope that means, no more antics Three,
don't want to have to
put you out of your misery like the first two."
"No, no, I'm sorry. I'll do what you say, I
promise." Jonathan takes
the hand that is offered to him and he's
pulled up.
"Good, now get something to nourish your body.
The task is still at
hand."
Jonathan nods and leaves the room quickly.
Back at the Legacy house.
Derek awakens and finds himself alone. He
hears the shower and heads
toward the bathroom. Steam fills the bedroom as
he pushes the door
open. "Philip?" He steps up to the shower and
opens the door, Philip
jumps.
"Oh God, Derek, you scared the life outa me."
"I'm sorry, are you okay?" Philip steps out of
the water and
into a towel.
"Parts of me hurt, but I suppose tha's
natural."
Derek nods. "Any regrets?"
"Regrets?" Philip meets Derek's eyes. "I
regret that you love Nick
and
not me. And I did what I did, knowing that
fact. Suppose I'll have
to
reconcile that with myself."
Derek touches his face and draws him forward
into a kiss.
Then hugs him close. After a moment Philip
draws back.
"Guess I best get dressed, see what the feed
has on Nick."
Derek nods and watches him leave. He turns the
water back on and
steps
in, scrubbing his body clean. The visions of
Philip moving beneath
him
run through his mind and he slams a fist into
the tiled wall,
sending
a crack down several pieces. It was time to
get his priorities
straight.
"Anything?"
Alex and Philip look at each other, hearing
the sadness in Derek's
voice. Alex finally speaks up. "Nothing yet."
Derek nods and crosses his arms across his
chest. "I think it's time
we paid Dr. Seed a visit. Find out for
ourselves what's going on.
Philip contact, Frank, see who he knows in
that area. Alex contact
the
D.C. house, let them know we're on our way.
Pack a bag and we'll
meet
at the chopper in one hour."
Nick awoke to the sound of someone clicking a metal object near his
head. He blinked until his eyes cleared. Looking up he could see a
sheet around the table where he was strapped.
A figure moved in and he tried to speak, call out, ask what was
going
on, but he could not. His mouth was gagged in such a way that his
tongue could not even move. He could make very little sound. Pushing
against the restraints proved to be of little use, only causing
himself to tire. The figure moved close, his face covered with a
surgical mask. He pushed his glass a little higher and shines a
light
into Nick's eyes, while holding open his lid.
"How are you feeling, Mr. Boyle?" Nick strained to talk and the gag
was removed, he fought to swallow and accepted the water that was
squirted into his mouth.
"Where am I?"
"In a hospital, you're very ill."
Nick rolls his eyes and head, trying to remember anything. "Jon..."
"Jonathan, he's fine. I'll bring him to see you when you're feeling
stronger." The man holds the gag back up to Nick's lips, but he
turns
his head away. "I'm sorry, but it is necessary. Wouldn't want to
swallow your tongue during a convulsion would you?"
Nick fights the gag as long as he can, but his mouth is forced open
and the gag, sank deep into his throat, forcing his tongue down. His
eyes widen as the doctor produces a empty syringe and fills it with
a
clear liquid.
"This will help you sleep, recover your strength, then you can go
home."
Nick nods and the needle pricks his arm. His eyes grow tired and he
slips off to sleep, thinking of Derek.
Derek stows his bag inside the chopper and hos into the pilot's seat.
His hands touch the controls and a vision takes over.
// Nick is strapped to a table, screaming as someone plunges a
needle
into his arm.//
He shakes it off and reaches for the headphones. The chopper is warm
and ready to go within a few minutes. Philip and Alex board the
chopper and they lift off.
Nick opens his eyes and crystal blue one, meet his. "Hi," He tries
to
talk, but the gag is still in place. "I'm sorry about the gag, the
doctor says you were convulsing and it's necessary." Nick relaxes a
little as Jonathan's fingers run through his hair. "It's okay, just
try and sleep, it'll be over soon." Soft lips on his forehead and eye.
"Soon Nicholas, soon." Nick drifts off to sleep again.
Jonathan is jerked back, a strong hand covering his mouth. "I told
you, not to play in here." He's physically dragged from the room and
tossed into a small cell. Once released he is left alone. He sinks
to
the padded floor and curls into a ball, the
pain in his head growing
more insistent.
Derek, Alex and Philip disembark the airplane
and gather their
luggage. After they check into a hotel. Alex
and Philip and Derek
head
to the lab to meet with Dr. Seed.
"Dr. Rayne, I'm so pleased you could make it
to our little seminar."
Derek grasped the hand extended to him.
//Nick is look up, straining against his
bounds, terror in his
eyes.//
"Are you all right, Dr. Rayne?"
"Yes, fine. This is Philip Callaghan and Alex
Moreau, my
associates." He smiles and follows the other
man into the lecture
hall.
Derek takes Alex's arm and whispers close to
her ear. "Nick's here."
"How do you know?" She says just as low.
"I had a vision, when Seed shook my hand."
"What do we do?"
"Let's listen to the lecture, then when Seed
is occupied we'll sneak
out and have a look around." He jumps
slightly as Philip touches
his
hand.
"We're here."
The three sit down a few feet from the stage.
"This isn't going to
be
easy, we're too close." Derek glances around
the stage and the
lights
blink, signaling the start of the lecture.
"Alex, once this begins I
want you to make an excuse to use the ladies
room, see what you can
find out."
Ten minutes into the lecture, Dr. Seed comes
to the
microphone. "Now Alex." She rises and begins
to edge her way
out of the seats. She's stopped at the end by
one of the men
who seated them. Derek breaths a sigh of
relief as she is
allowed to leave the hall.
"Derek, what are you doing?" Philip tenses as
Derek takes his hand.
"It will be your turn next, try and make it
down that hall we seen on
the way in." Philip nods and a few minutes
later he begins to stand
up, but Alex comes back and slides in her seat.
"It's no good Derek, we can't get in."
Derek frowns and the all finish the lecture.
When it's over they
return to their hotel rooms. Alex bids her
good night and leaves
Derek
and Philip alone. "What's next?"
"We have to get in there and save Nick, he's
in danger Philip, I can
feel it."
Philip nods and pats his shoulder. "What about
calling Frank? Maybe
he
has some new leads."
"Good idea." Derek reaches his in breast
pocket for his phone as it
begins ringiing. "Hello. Yes, Frank, I was
just about to..." Derek's
face doesn't lighten as he talks to his
friend. "I understand, yes,
let me know if you hear anything. Yes, Kristen
is still checking
into
the Lab, she'll be glad to have the help.
Thanks, good bye."
He clicks the phone closed and shakes his
head. "Nothing."
"We'll find 'em Derek."
Derek nods and begins getting ready for bed.
Lying in bed awake Philip can hear Derek
tossing and turning in the
other bed. "Derek?"
"Yes?" Derek turns over to see Philip standing
beside his bed. "What
is it?"
"I thought you might want to talk." He sits
down beside Derek. "I
know
this has been hard on you and we haven't
talked alot since that
night."
"I know and I'm sorry." Derek sits up. "I
shouldn't have asked for
your company that night, it was wrong."
"What's important now is you and finding Nick.
I just want to be here,
if you need me." Philip leans back against the
headboard. "It's all
my
fault to begin with."
"How?"
"I came back and made a fool of myself with
Nick. Hurt you and him."
"If it hadn't been you, it would have been
someone else." Derek
stands up and walks to the window. "I was a
fool to believe I could
keep Nick to myself."
"No you weren't, Derek. He loves you, he's
just confused right now."
"He's angry and hurting and I pushed him
away."
Philip touches Derek's shoulder. "You did what
you had to do Derek,
he
was hurting you."
"It doesn't matter, I should have endured it,
been stronger. He
needed that Philip, he needed me."
Philip puts his arm around Derek's shoulder
and steers the older man
back to bed.
Nick moans and turns over, bandaids cover the
still seeping holes
where the iv's had been. He sits up, but
dizziness takes over and he
falls back to the padded floor. "Let me out!"
"Nick, is that you?" A familiar voice comes
through the wall and
Nick
crawls toward it. "Are you there?" It comes
again, that twinge of
British accent. Then the memories of the
abduction flood back.
"Jonathan!"
"Yes, I'm in the cell beside you, oh God it's
good to hear your
voice, it's been such a long time."
"Yeah, hours." Nick slumps against the
padding, breathing becoming
harder and harder.
"No Nick, it's me Jonathan, the real Jonathan.
Not that blasted
fake."
"Sure it is."
"Nick, you were strapped to the table, I was
next to you on the
other
one. All the bloody tests, I feel like I've
been bit by vampire
or something."
Nick can't contain his giggling at the
thought. "Forget it,
I don't believe you."
"Nick, do you know what my last request would
be?"
After a long moment. Nick shakes his head.
Hearing nothing but
silence he looks up, the thick walls have no
windows. He
laughs, for some reason he thought the other
man could see him
"What would it be Jonny?"
"To see you, it's been so long, do you still
have the pony tail, God
you were georgous. I couldn't get a good look
at you the other day.
Do
you remember the night my sister caught us
together?"
Nick laughs a bit, flashing back in his mind
to his teenage
years.
"She was so angry, had a thing for you, she
did. Really couldn't
deal
with you being with me."
"Yeah, she moved out after that. How is she?"
"She died two years ago. Airplane crash."
Nick closed his eyes, remembering the long,
curly amber hair
dancing against the wind as Jessica's date
picked her up for a
date. She left soon after that, dismayed and
angry at him and
Jonathan. "What about your parents?"
"My mum is still around, but she's not been
very happy with me,
getting in with the baddies and all. Just
can't understand why I
grew
up to be a thief."
"Why did you?"
"I could have I suppose, but the money Nick,
it was..."
"Yeah, I know." Nick relaxes a bit. "How are
we going to get out of
here Jonathan?"
"I don't know, I've tried. They have been
pooking and proding
me for days now."
"You're clone is pretty convincing."
"I know, I've met him. He was playing with you
the other day, I
almost went mad."
"I don't remember that."
"Good thing, cause it was pretty embarassing
really. It's been a
long
time since you and I...you know."
"No, actually it was a few days ago."
"What?! Bloody bastard, even taking the
pleasure away from me. Not
fair Nicholas."
"This is too weird for me Jonathan, if you're
Jonathan."
"I'm as sure as I can be Nicholas. I was
strapped to a table for days,
nearly all my bodily fluids drained. If I'm
the clone, I pity the
real me."
They both laugh and relax. Nick falls asleep
soon after. When he
awakens, it's to a noise in the hall. "Who's
there?"
"Your doctor of course, who else. It's time
you were in a regular
room, don't you think Mr. Boyle?" Nick is
lifted from the floor and
given an injection and slips into
unconsciuosness.
Derek awakens the next morning to the phone
beside him ringing. He
pushes to the side as he grabs the receiver.
"Derek Rayne. Yes," He
sits up fully now and Philip wakes up. "I'll
be there right away." He
slips the phone back in it's cradle."Philip,
let's go, they've found
Nick."
"Who?" Philip pulls on his jeans and shirt and
grabs his coat.
"One of the local hospitals call his
discription into the police
dept
as a John Doe, he was found wandering the
streets late last night."
Derek grabs his coat and tie and heads out the
door. He knocks on
Alex's door hard and she pulls it open.
"What is it?"
"Let's go, they've found Nick."
Alex nods and goes into the bathroom to dress.
"Did they say anything about Jonathan?"
Derek shakes his head. "I didn't ask, I guess
I should have. We'll
find out once we get there. Come on Alex."
"Calm down, Derek. " Derek rattles the car
keys over and over again.
Philip catches his hand and takes the keys.
"I'm drivin."
"No, you're not."
Philip heads out the door, not listening to
Derek's complaints.
"Alex, come on." Derek says and heads out
after Philip.
They all arrive at the hospital twenty minutes
later. Derek is first
through the door, Philip and Alex stay behind
to talk to the doctors.
Derek wants to rush forward and gather the
young man in his arms,
but
he holds back. The nurse finishes and steps
back. An oxygen tube is
under Nick's nose and iv's are suspended above
his head. "How is he?"
"He's dehydrated, but other than that, he's
fine."
Derek takes a deep breath, letting it out
slowly. "Thank God." He
steps close and runs his hand along the strong
jaw. "Nick? Can you
hear me?" The nurse steps close.
"He's exhausted, he'll probably sleep most of
the day."
Derek nods and waits until the nurse leaves.
"Nick," A thousand
things had crossed his mind to say once he
found nick. But now that
he
was found and everything was all right, he
couldn't think of
anything
but, "I love you." He pulls back as Alex and
Philip come through the
door. "What did the doctor say?"
"He's fine, dehydrated but he'll pull
through." Philip glances from
Nick to Derek. "Jonathan is in the room next
door, if you want to
talk
to him."
"He's conscious."
"Yes, he's awake."
"Good, maybe he can give us some answers.
Alex, you stay with Nick,
come on Philip."
Jonathan is finishing his breakfast as Philip
and Derek come into
the
room. He smiles a little and pushes his tray
away. "More police?"
Derek looks to Philip. "You don't know us?"
"Should I?"
Derek steps forward. "Derek Rayne, Philip
Callagahn, from the Luna
Foundation."
Jonathan shakes his head at the two strangers.
"Sorry, but I don't
remember you. Where did we meet?"
"We work with Nick Boyle." Jonathan's face
lit up at the mention of
Nick's name.
"NIcholas, where is he? They wouldn't tell me."
"He's fine, he was listed as a John Doe."
Derek sized up the younger
man, same features, hair and eyes as the man
that had accompanied
Nick
back to the house. "Can you tell me what's
happened, the last few
days?"
"I've been held captive in a lab somewhere. They
were doing
experiments
and ..." His voice trailed off, remembering
the look on his double's
face. "They made another, he knew you, didn't
he?"
"Yes, he was with Nick."
"That's why the police are holding me, they
suspect I had something
to
do with Nick's disappearance. Oh God."
Derek steps forward. "How can we be sure,
you're who you say you are.
Not another clone?"
"I don't know, but I have my memories before
they caught me."
"Caught you?"
"Yes, I was investigating the human cloning in
Dr. Seed's lab, I got
close, inside. He figured it out and captured
me."
"Why would he let you go now?"
"I don't know."
"We'll keep an eye on you, if you need
anything, let us know."
Jonathan nods at Derek as he and Philip step
to the door.
"Stay here, talk to him, find out what you can
about the lab."
Philip agrees and turns back to Jonathan.
Derek heads back into Nick's room, very
pleased to find he's awake
talking to Alex. Alex smiles at Derek and pats
Nick's arm.
"I'll let you two have some time."
"Philip is next door with Jonathan, help him."
Nick smiles at Derek steps up. "Derek."
Derek takes Nick's hand and leans down,
kissing his lips lightly.
"How
are you?"
"Been better." He forces a grin as Derek
smiles and sits down on the
bed beside him. "I'm sorry Derek, if I hadn't
ran off...."
"Shhhh, no need for that now love, just rest."
"How long have I been here?"
"Just a few hours, what do you remember?"
"Being strapped to this table, this doctor
telling me I was sick.
Jonathan, where's Jonathan?"
Derek pushes Nick back to his pillow, patting
his chest. "He's fine,
he's next door. He's in better shape than
you." He brushes the hair
from Nick's face and catches himself as a tear
escapes. "Rachel's on
her way, I called her as soon as they told me
they had found you."
Nick just nods and stares into Derek's eyes.
"Do you remember the
man's name, or anything about where you were
being held?"
"I don't know, it's all foggy right now."
"That's fine, just rest then. I'll be here."
Nick closes his eyes
and
drifted off to sleep. Derek steps into the hall
to meet Philip and
Alex.
"Derek what's going on?"
"We have to run some tests, find out if these
two are who they say
they are."
"What? Are you saying that's not Nick?" Philip
asks, looking through
the door at the sleeping figure.
"I don't know, I think it is, but I'd like to
be sure."
"I'll get the doctor." Derek grabs Alex's arm.
"No, we'll wait until he's released and we'll
take him home. Have
they
run blood tests here?"
"Yes, but they're not back yet." Derek nods to
her. "We'll just have
to wait then."
Nick and Jonathan are flown back to San
Fransisco as soon as they
are able. Jonathan recovers quicker than Nick
and Derek grows more
concerned by the day.
Alex, Kristen and Philip get ready to leave
for West Africa, to
investigate the haunting of a temple in Ghana.
The locals have
reported strange voices and visions,
surrounding several ancient
headpieces housed in the temple.
Derek walks into Nick's bedroom to find him
packing.
"What are you doing?"
"Getting ready." Nick slaps a clip into a gun
and checks the barrel.
"Why?"
"You're not going to Ghana."
Nick glances up at Derek and snickers a bit.
"Yeah, right."
"It's not necessary and I think you should
rest." Derek steps close
and touches Nick's cheek, only to have his
hand batted away.
"Look Derek, this is my job. I'm going."
"Nick, you don't look well. I think a few more
days rest and then
we'll all join the team. That is, if it's even
necessary." The look
on
Nick's face made him take a step back. Nick's
attitude hadn't
improved
with his abduction or strange return. He was
still hateful and
hurtful
after they got him home.
"Fine, boss!" Nick tosses the bag to the
floor and pushes past
Derek, who grabs his arm.
"Nick, we need to talk."
"I don't. Now let go." Nick jerks his arm away
harder than is
necessary and heads out the door.
That afternoon, after the trio had departed
Jonathan finds Nick in
the
garden working out. "Hey."
Nick stops and smiles. "Hey." Without thinking
he pulls Jonathan
close
and kisses him hard on the mouth.
"Whoa, Nicholas. The trees have eyes."
Jonathan steps back, breaking
the tight embrace.
"Oh yeah, I forgot," Nick leans in. "You're
the 'real' Jonathan. Not
the one who shared my bed a few weeks ago. He
was pretty good you
know, knew just when to move and when to shut
up." Nick pushes
Jonathan back against a tree. "You do too, as
I remember."
"Nick, stop. This isn't like you."
"Isn't it Jonnny Boy, it's been a long time."
Nick rubs his body
against the slighter man's and starts to kiss
him, but he hears
Derek's voice calling them.
"Jonathan, " He steps up as they part. "You
have a phone call,
someone named Marcus."
"Thank you, Derek." Jonathan steals a glance
back over his shoulder
at
Nick, then heads inside.
"What was that all about?" Derek asks,
noticing the smug look on
Nick's face.
"Nothing, was there something you wanted?"
With Derek's frown and
shake of his head, Nick heads off for a run.
Within a few mintures
he
is screaming and Derek finds him, lying on the
ground, holding his
head.
"Nick," He kneels down beside the screaming
figure and seizes his
arms. "What is it?"
"My head, my head..."
Derek helps him up and half carries him back
to the house. A quick
call to Rachel and he returns to the living
room, where he had laid
Nick down on the couch. "Here, this will
help." He places a cool
towel
over Nick's eyes. "Just rest, Rachel is on the
way."
"Great, wonder doc." Derek smiles at the bit
of humor. A little of
his
old Nick was coming back through.
"What happened?"
"I don't know, it just hit me." Derek rubs his
arm, patting and
soothing him as he struggles to sit up.
"Just lie back, relax."
Nick pulls off the towel. He lifts his hand
and caresses Derek's
cheek. "I never said thank you."
"For what?"
"Coming after me. With everything that's
happened, I wasn't sure
you
would." Derek is shaking his head. "What?"
"You still don't know, do you?"
Nick sits up a little. "What?"
"How much I love you. You still don't know."
Derek catches Nick's
chin
as he lowers his head. "I would do anything
for you." He leans
forward
and presses his lips against Nick's quickly,
then stands up. "Rachel
will be here soon, would you like me to send
Jonathan in?"
Nick wipes his eyes and nods. "Derek," The
older man turns back to
him. "I've been a real jerk lately and I'm
sorry."
Derek smiles and heads out of the room. He
meets Jonathan in the
hallway. "Hi, Nick is in there, he collapsed."
"What?" Jonathan pushes past Derek into the
living room, rushing to
Nick's side. He checks him over quickly as he
feels Derek standing
behind him. He smiles at Nick and stands up.
"Probably just an after
affect of all drugs and tests. I still have
headaches sometimes.
"Still, I'd feel better if Rachel had a look."
"Oh yes, definetly. Derek, on the phone
earlier, that was Marcus. He
works with me for the Founation, he'd like to
come and get me, if
that's okay with you."
Derek hears Jonathan, but his eyes are
watching Nick's reaction to
his
departure. When the younger man looks away,
Derek nods to Jonathan.
"Yes, that's fine, ask him to come, when
you're ready.
Rachel ordered Nick to bed and takes a blood
sample.
"Make him rest, I'll get this to the lab, we
should know something
in
a few days."
"Use the lab here Rachel, I want to know now."
"It'll still take at least twenty four hours
until I know anything."
Jonathan left two days later, escorted by
Federal Agents. Derek still
couldn't get a name out of the group, so he
let it drop. He decided
to put Kristen on the trail of finding out
more, once she returned.
Right now his attention and concern centered
on Nick.
Derek tried to get Nick to slow down, take it
easy, but the ex-Seal
insisted on keeping his work out routine.
Often times, tiring before
he finished. He didn't allow anyone to help
him, so he usually pushed
himself until he collapsed away from the
house. Longer runs, more
garden time.
Derek began watching closer and following him,
just to make sure he
was okay. The initial blood test came back
negative, Nick was fine.
After a few weeks, his symptoms returned and
full blown.
It was late one evening and Derek had been
watching for him to
return. When he didn't, he searched for him,
he found him near the
lake. Stretched out on the grass.
"Nick, are you all right." Derek falls to his
knees beside the sweaty
young man, concern waxing his handsome
features.
"I guess, just tired." Nick reaches out a
hand and Derek pulls him
up.
"Let's get you back to the house."
"No, I want to sit out here for a bit, I'll be
back in later." Nick
looks away after seeing the pain behind the
hazel eyes. "I'm all
right Derek, just tired."
"You should eat, you're getting so thin."
"I eat, I just work it off." Nick lied,
telling Derek and himself a
lie was easier than admitting the truth. The
truth being he felt like
hell all the time now and couldn't shake off
the fatigue that racked
his body. "Anything new in the world that
needs conquering?"
"Nothing we can't handle, you should rest."
"Derek, I've been home for weeks now, I'm
fine. I think it's time you
stopped babying me."
"I'm not!" Derek stands up, offended by Nick's
words.
"Really?" The younger man walks around the
concrete stool. "Then why
are you avoiding me?"
"Avoiding you? I don't know what you mean?"
Derek takes a deep
breath as Nick steps close. Nick reaches up
and pulls Derek's head
down and their lips meet, but Derek breaks the
kiss after just a few
seconds.
"See, I thought Rachel said I didn't have
anything catching. You act
like I have the plague or something." Nick
watches Derek's face, he
can see that the older man is struggling,
trying to find the words.
"I don't think that. I know you'd have
anything catching and if you
did, I wouldn't care. But things have been
strained between us and I
want to work those out before we just fall in
bed again. There's
Jonathan and..."
"Jonathan was a mistake Derek. We were lovers
ages ago, when he came
back, it was like...it was like he never left.
I'm sorry it
happened, but it did and I can't change that."
Derek still doesn't
meet his eyes. "Rachel says I'm fit, that
should be enough."
Derek sits down on the stool. "You can't
forgive me, can you?"
"That's not it."
"Then what Derek? I want to be with you. I
thought you still
loved me. God knows I still love you, that
never changed. It
went haywire, that's all. "
"Of course I still love you." Derek wraps his
arms around Nick's.
"I'll never stop loving you."
Nick pulls back and begins kissing Derek
again, his tongue more
insistant this time. He feels the older man
relax into the kiss
and drops his hand into Derek's lap, massaging
the growing
erection. Derek jumps up, breathing hard.
"No, we can't." Nick nods and starts toward
the house. "Nick,
wait."
"Why, you've made yourself pretty clear, Derek.
I slept with Philip
and now Jonathan and you don't want anything
to do with me, that's
it isn't it?" Derek shakes his head. "Is
there something else?"
"Yes."
"What?"
"There's no excuse for it, but..."
"Just tell me, Derek?"
"Philip."
Nick takes a few steps back, a shocked look on
his face. "You and
Philip?" Derek nods. "So you're...seeing each
other."
"No, it was just the one time, but sometimes
he comes to me at night
and stays with me." Derek stares a hole in the
ground.
"Well, I ahh.. guess I deserved that." Nick
heads toward the house,
but Derek doesn't persue. He sits down on the
bench and stares out
over the lake.
"No Nick, you didn't deserve that. I let you
down." Derek hangs his
head and tries fighting the tears, but they
come anyway. After a few
moments a warm hand caresses his shoulder and
he looks up. Rachel
smiles and sits down beside him.
"Looks like, you could use a friend."
"Is Nick all right Rachel? He seems so tired
and he's losing weight,
I'm worried about him."
"I know you are, but, he's a big boy and I'm
sure he'll be fine. The
tests were negative for any foreign matter.
He'll still have to take
tests for HIV, but I wouldn't be too worried
about that. Jonathan
came up negative."
"Yes, but according to them, Jonathan was a
clone, what if the clone
was ill and gave Nick something we don't know
about."
Rachel follows him back toward the house. "I
don't know Derek, we'll
just have to wait and see."
They see Philip running toward them and hurry
in their direction.
"Hurry, Rachel, it's Nick." She grabs Philip's
arms, trying to calm
him.
"What is it?"
"He's collapsed, screaming with his head
again."
Rachel ordered every test she could think of.
Nick was admitted to
the
hospital and grew more and more aggitated when
the tests kept coming
back negative.
"Come on, Derek, get me out of here. There's
nothing wrong, please.
Come on." Nick's pleas when unanswered as
Derek sat engrossed in a
list of tests and results the doctor had
allowed him to see. "Derek?"
"Yes?" He looks up to see Nick's legs dangling
over the side of the
bed. "What are you doing?"
"Getting out of here, what does it look like."
Derek pushes him back
to the bed and then makes him sit down.
"You're not going anywhere until the doctor
releases you. You've
lost
a lot weight and the iv is helping to keep you
hydrated."
"I don't care, I want to go home." Derek opens
his mouth to argue
but
is cut off by the door opening.
"Well Nick, looks like you can be out of here
in a few days."
Rachel says pulling the blankets back up over
him.
"What did they find?"
"Nothing yet," Rachel said to Derek.
"See I told..." Nick quietens as Derek clamps
a hand over his mouth.
Rachel laughs a little. "We're still waiting
on a few tests, but I'm
sure they'll come back negative."
Nick kisses Derek's palm and the older man
pulls his hand away.
"Sorry Nick."
"It's okay, I know I've been a pain." He
smiles as Derek does,
seeing relief on Derek's face for the first
time in ages.
"You just want to go home, I can understand
that."
Rachel winks at Nick and leaves.
He's released the next morning. Still the
doctors warn to take it
easy, get some rest and eat. That evening
after everyone has gone to
sleep Derek is writing in his journal as he
hears a knock at the door.
"Come." He smiles as Nick comes in and closes
the door behind him.
"Am I intruding?"
"No, not at all."
"Is Philip coming around tonight." Derek
shakes his head and sits
down.
"No, I've ended any personal involvement that
Philip and I had."
"Good," Derek watches as Nick's shy smiles
crosses his face. "Can I
stay?" He takes a deep breath and goes to
Nick.
"I want that more than anything, but..."
"No buts, Derek." His mouth presses against
the older man's, drawing
his tongue out, making it dance with his. He
breaks the kiss and
steps
back. "Yes or no?"
"Oh love, yes." He grabs Nick and pulls him
forward, crushing his
mouth, biting and sucking on the soft lips.
Feeling the soft stubble
of the other man's cheek as he works his way
down the taunt neck.
His
hands roam the thin body, gently caressing the
new contours and dips.
They walk together to the bed and fall atop
the comforters,
Derek pulls Nick close, hugging and kissing
him. "I want you
Derek. I want you to take me." Derek pulls
back and meets the
dark eyes.
"I love you."
Nick thrusts his hips forward and holds onto
Derek's shoulders
and arms. He's pulled on top of Derek and the
older man thrusts
against him, The dance heightens and both men
release their need
without skin ever touching. They lie there
together for long moments,
reeling in the afterglow of the moment. Nick
finally climbs off and
collapses next to Derek.
"I wanted you inside me."
Derek pulls him close and kisses his forehead.
"We'll get there
my love. I want us to take our time this
time."
They shower quickly and climb back beneath the
sheets. Derek insists
on Nick wearing something to bed, his body
shivering from the shower.
The conversation drifts from Legacy business,
to Kristen, to
Jonathan
and finally on Nick's health. Nick snuggles
down beside Derek,
listening to the steady rhythm of his heart
and falls asleep wrapped
in his warm embrace.
"I've got the test results." Rachel said,
softly to Derek, pulling
away from the others.
"He's fine, right?" Derek's face pales as
Rachel shakes her head
and
meets his eyes.
"They found something." Rachel gasps at the
force at which Derek
seizes her arm.
"Tell me."
"It's a rare blood disease."
Derek studies her face for a moment. "What's
the prognosis?"
"Derek, it's rare, very rare. There have only
been two other
reported
caes, ever."
"And?"
"The symptoms are the same as Nick's.
Headache, fatigue, loss of
appetite, weight. The onset is sudden, just
like what happened with
Nick."
"You're not telling me everything. What is it?"
"The other two, died within a few months of
contracting the disease."
"How is contracted?" Derek asked as he
watched Nick cutting up
with
Kat in the next room. It had been a month
since his first attack.
Rachel had ordered a full battery of tests.
That in conjunction with
the physical he had upon returning from the
cloning labs, she
thought
she had covered everything.
"They're not sure, but they believe it could
be genetic. They're
checking the family histories of the patients
now, see if
they're any abnormalities."
"I'll tell him, alone."
"Derek I don't think that's such a good idea,
you need all the
support you can..."
"No, I'll do it."
Derek pulls open the door. "Kat, your mommy
wants to see you in the
kitchen." Kat smiles and hurries past Derek.
"See you later Nick, maybe we can go out into
the garden."
"Sure kiddo, what ever you want." He glances
up at Derek and smiles,
seeing the sadness in his eyes. "You look way
too series Derek,
lighten up."
Derek fought back the emotions as Nick wraps
his arms around him,
hugging him quickly. He wanted to hold on
forever and not let him go,
but the younger man broke the embrace and
steps back. "Sit down,
Nick."
"What is it?" He sits and Derek takes his hand.
"The tests have come back. The blood tests."
Nick's mouth works into a tight grimace and he
pulls his hand from
Derek's, fearing the worse. "What do I have?"
"They don't have a name for it. It's quite
rare."
"How long?"
"Now, Nick you can't think like that."
"How long?"
"No one knows, it's very rare."
Nick stands up and walks around the room.
"Truth time, Derek." Derek sighs and meets his
eyes. "What happens
now?"
"I don't know, more tests, we'll get you to
the hospital first
thing in the morning."
"Why so quick?" A darkness settles on Nick's
face. "You know
how long I've got, don't you?" Derek refuses
to met his eyes and
Nick
kneels at his feet. "Tell me Derek, or I'll go
to Rachel, she'll
tell
me."
"The affliction has killed two others, all
within four months of the
initial symptoms."
Nick sits back on his heels, his mouth open
slightly. "Oh God." He
falls back and Derek is there, holding him,
hugging him. "This can't
be true, Derek, you've got to do something."
Nick was clenching to
Derek's coat now, his wet face wiping against
the lapels.
"Of course my love, I'll doing everything I
can."
It was the turning point. Nothing else
mattered anymore. Nick
getting
well, was the only topic of conversation.
Derek took to his side,
day
and night. Their arguments, disagreements and
even sex was forgotten.
It was a rare thing to see them parted now.
Derek kept Nick close
during the day and tucked beside him at night.
He nurtured Nick,
knowing their days together were numbered.
The team banded together more than they ever
had. Nick's life was in
danger and they must find out any connection
between his time at the
lab and his new affliction.
"Did you get the background information on the
victims?"
Kristen jumps but relaxes as she recognizes
the 'boss' tone.
"Yes, both were found in or around the
Washington D.C. area. The
first
was Louis Velmer a business man, early
thirties's. He was engaged to
a
woman named Carla Blask, she works for
Universal Product. The second
man was Houston Walker, he was younger, in his
twenties. His only
family is his mother, she's living in North
Carolina. As far as the
Frank could determine, there weren't any
connections to the lab or
each other. It all seems random. " Kristen
patiently waited for
further instructions as Derek loomed over her.
"Something must trigger this thing. They had
no connection with the
lab?"
"None that we could see, we're still searching
into the lab's
holdings and assorted dirty deeds."
"Good, you and Alex fly out there, talk to
Mrs. Blask and Mr.
Walker's mother. Find out anyway they might
have
contracted this disease."
"Better hurry." Derek turns to Rachel. Carla
Blask, was just
diagnosed with the disease, she's already been
hospitalized."
"Damn. All right, get packed." Kristen skirted
out of the control
room. "Rachel, how Nick's?"
"He's okay, little worried about you. You
shouldn't baby him so much,
you know he hates that."
Derek nods slowly. "I know, but I don't know
what else to do."
"How about, treating me like you always did."
Nick steps up and
Rachel hugs him quickly, before leaving. "We
still don't know how I
got it?"
"No, the doctors don't believe it's airborne,
like a virus, they're
pretty sure it's a genetic disorder. Thing is,
we haven't a clue
yet, as to how it is triggered. Could be
something that you and
Jonathan were exposed to at the lab."
Nick sits down at the control panel, glancing
up at the victim's
pictures on the screen. "They both had it?"
"Yes." Derek stares at the screen then glances
down to Nick.
"Derek, I want you to promise me something."
"What's that?"
"When I go." Derek turns away, but Nick grabs
his arm. "I want to be
with Julia, down by the lake. I don't want you
going to some
military
cemetery to have a conversation with me."
"If I have anything to say about it, you're
not going anywhere." He
runs his fingers through the dark hair and
pulls the young man close.
"Why don't you get some rest, I have a few
things to work out."
Nick pushes Derek back and looks up into his
eyes. "How about I sit
right here, work on this problem and we kill
two birds with one
stone."
Derek smiles. "Fine, but if you get tired."
"If I get tired, I'll go lie down, promise."
Derek leans down and
kisses his lips, gently at first, but Nick
holds his head
encouraging
the kiss to deepen and turn more passionate,
feeling brave he cups
Derek's cock and balls in his hand, caressing
them. His own arousal
heightens as Derek doesn't shove him away.
Instead reaches down and
strokes Nick through his jeans. Both men are a
bit breathless as
they
finally break off the kisses. Noises in the
hall forcing them apart.
"Let's go to my room, please."
"Later, right now we have to," Derek takes a
deep breath, shaking
off
the warm feeling that surges through his body.
"We have work to do."
"Derek, come on. It's been so long." Nick
groans as Derek picks up
the
phone and starts dialing. "You're cruel, you
know that."
Derek grins and rub's Nick's cheek. "Yes,
Frank Karmak, please.
Derek Rayne."
Derek finally forces Nick to rest and he
rejoins Kristen and Alex in
the control room.
"Good, Derek, I think we have something."
Kristen punches several
button on the computer panel. "Louis Velmer
was reported missing
on Friday in January. His girlfriend filed the
report when he failed
to come home from work. Two days later, he
calls her and tells her,
he's taken a vacation, he'll be back in two
weeks."
"Did the police investigate?"
"They did up until he called, then it was
dropped."
Derek crosses his arms across his chest. "We
should talk to Ms.
Bask, see what she has to say about the
disappearance. What else do
you have?"
"Well, Mr. Walker's friends reported a similar
incident. The police
were less inclined to investigate without any
real witnesses."
"What do you mean?" Derek asked, glancing down
at Alex.
"Well, seems his friends saw someone grab him
and pull him into a
van. They told the police what they saw but
couldn't give a good
description of the van, it was pretty late and
they had been
drinking. When he called, two days later, the
police dropped it."
"Just like in the first case." The two women
nod at Derek. "I think
it's time we investigate. Alex you and Kristen
will see Mr. Walker's
mother. Philip and I will visit Ms. Bask, find
out everything you can
about their absences."
Kristen hands Derek a folder. "This is
everything the hospital has on
the disease and the file for Velmer."
"Thank you, let's go."
Derek heads upstairs to check on Nick, who's
sleeping soundly on
Derek's bed. "Nick."
The young man stirs and turns over, smiling up
at Derek. "You gonna
join me?" He smiles as Derek slides down on
top of him.
"I'd love to, but, I have to go to
Washington," Derek keeps most of
his weight on his arms, not wanting to hurt
Nick. "Seems the victims
were both absent for certain periods of time
before they got sick,
they're maybe a connection."
Nick smiles and kisses Derek softly. "Hurry
back."
"I will, as fast as I can." He pushes off and
grabs his 'packed' bag
out of the closet. "If you need me before
then, just call. I can be
back in a matter of hours." Nick moves to get
off the bed, but Derek
pushes him back. "Just rest, I'll have Rachel
check on you in a
little while."
"I just want to take a little nap, that's
all." Derek hugs him,
kissing his neck and face.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"I'll be back as soon as I can."
The next day, Derek and Philip meet with Ms.
Bask, Louis Velmer's
fiance. They were both surprised at the
expensive penthouse
apartment. A tall read headed woman, opened
the door and invited them
inside.
"Ms. Bask, we were hoping that you would shed
some light on the
disappearance of your late fiance." Derek sat
where she pointed,
followed closely by Philip.
"I told the police everything I know. Louis
called a few days later
to let me know he was on vacation, nothing
more."
"Did he do that often, take vacations on the
spur of the moment, I
mean?" Philip watched her stand and cross the
room.
"Would you care for something to drink?" She
pours herself a glass of
water as the guys shake their heads. "Yes,
Louis was like that."
"Then why would you report him missing."
"I didn't, my Louis's mother did and when the
police questioned me, I
told them the truth. I hadn't seen Louis since
Thursday evening, but
I suspected that he was taking a trip, nothing
more."
"When he returned, did he act strange or
anything?" Philip asked.
"No, why should he?"
"The illness that he contracted, do you know
anything about it?"
Derek asked.
"It was quite sudden and it took him, that's
all I need to know."
"I'm sorry for your loss Ms. Bask, but someone
close to me has
contracted this disease and I need to know
anything I can to
help."
"There isn't a cure, it always kills."
"What do you mean, I thought there had only
been two cases. Do
you know of more?"
"Of course not, I just mean, they didn't have
anything that could
help Louis." She looks away. "If you gentleman
don't mind, I have
plans."
"Of course," Derek stand up and walks toward
the door. "By the
way, what kind of business was Mr. Velmer in?"
"People."
"Excuse me?" The woman steps close to him.
"He found donors for infertile couples. Those
that had little or no
chance of conceiving on their own."
Derek glanced around the room. "Must pay
pretty well."
"You'd be surprised how much someone would pay
to have their eggs
fertilized by a certain kind of person. Some
want Jean Claude, some
want President Clinton, others find Andy
Warhol fascinating. The idea
of having a child with specific personality
traits already instilled,
is stimulating."
"And lucrative." Derek shakes her hand.
"Yes, it can be."
"What is it that you do?" Derek asks.
"I'm in public relations for the same firm.
One can never have too
many investors."
"If you remember anything, let me know." She
takes the card from
Derek's hand and nods.
"Good luck to your friend."
She closes the door behind them and looks over
the card. She
grabs the cordless and hits speed dial. "Yes,
Michael, someone
from the Luna Foundation was here asking
questions about Louis'
death. (pause) Yes, Derek Rayne, Dr. Derek
Rayne."
"How is he, Rachel?" Derek held tight to the
phone, knowing that the
answer was not going to be what he wanted to
hear.
"He's weak Derek...I don't know..."
"Rachel, we've made some progress, I just need
to wait on Alex and
Kristen to finish up, we'll be leaving in a
few days."
"Hurry Derek, he's slipping away."
Derek clicked the phone closed and clenched
his eyes tight. He jumps
slightly as Philip touches his arm.
"Is Nick okay?" He lowers his head as Derek
shakes his. "Anything we
can do?"
"Rachel says he's slipping away. Can you
finish here, I'm going to
head back."
"Of course," Philip pulled Derek close and the
older man's arms
encircled him. "Be careful."
"I will, let me know if you learn anything."
"Right away."
Rachel pushes open the door with the tray of
food. "How about some
dinner?"
Nick pushes his body over and sits up. "Did
you talk to Derek?"
"Yes, he says he'll be a few more days."
Rachel sits the tray over
his
lap and sits down beside him. "I want you to
eat all of this, it'll
make you stronger."
"No, it won't, but I'll try." Nick allows
Rachel to
feed him, pushing her away after a few bites.
"Enough."
"No, you need all of it, it's good for you."
Rachel almost wears the
next spoonful as she forcefully tries to put
it in Nick's mouth.
"Come
on, Nick."
"I don't want any more, just leave me alone,
my head hurts again."
"I'll get your pills."
"No, they don't help." Rachel lifts the tray
away and sits it on the
floor. "I just want to be alone for a little
while, okay?"
Rachel reaches out and brushes the hair out of
Nick's face, "Is
there
anyone I should contact?"
Nick met her eyes, knowing that she meant
anyone that he wanted to
see, before he died. "No, no one."
"Just rest, Derek will be home as soon as he
can."
She pulls up the cover over him and takes the
tray away.
Alex and Kristen make their way to the home of
Houston Walker's
mother. She tells them to check with Houston's
friends, she knew
little about his work or social life.
A tall dark haired man answered the door, when
Alex knocked. "Hello,
Mr. Brande, I'm Alex Moreau, I called
earlier."
"Yes, please come in and call me Eric." He
moved aside and they step
inside the apartment.
"This is Kristen Adams," They shake hands.
"We're investigating the
death of Houston Walker."
"Why, it's been over a year now." The man
waved toward
the couch and sat opposite them in a large
chair. "Some kind of rare
blood disease."
"How well did you know him?" Kristen asked,
watching as the man grew
a
little nervous. "Is there something wrong?"
"No, I knew Houston very well. As well as one
can know another
person."
The sadness in his eyes made Kristen grown a
little sad and she was
glad that Alex spoke up. "What we'd like to
know is, their was a
time
before he got sick, when he disappeared,
right?"
"Yeah, he took off for a couple of weeks, but
he was okay when he
got
back, the symptoms didn't show up until later."
"Where did he say he was?" Alex asked.
"He didn't know. The doctors said he might
have hit his head and
lost
his memory. The police looked everywhere, they
even investigated the
people he worked for."
"His record said, he was working for a
delivery company."
"Yeah, no big mystery, cept what he did on the
side." Kristen smiled
at Alex. "He was working for some lab, they
used the truck after
hours, delivering what, I don't know, but I
got the feeling it
wasn't
above board."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because he told me he was worried, they
threatened to do him bodily
harm if he didn't work for them."
"Why didn't he report them?" Eric laughed and
sat forward looking
into
Alex's eyes.
"When you're poor, you do what you're told.
Houston was poor, that's
why he did the experiments, or didn't you
computers tell you about
that either?"
"No, what experiments?"
"He was a test subject for the lab in
Bethesda, matter of fact that
Dr. called when he got sick, wanted him to
come back to the lab for
more tests. He refused."
"So you think the experiments where what made
him sick?"
"I don't know, but he's gone and there's
nothing you or I can do
about
it."
Kristen stood up."Thank you, Mr. Brande and
I'm very sorry for your
loss."
"Thank you, Houston was a good friend. We
don't get many of
those in life. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more
help." He presses a
card into Alex's hand as he shakes it.
"Thank you." Alex smiled and lead Kristen out
the front door.
"What's up?"
"Look," They head down the walk as Alex shows
Kristen the business
card. "It's from Seed's lab."
Derek drops his bag by the door and heads
upstairs. Rachel stops him
outside the door. "Wait!"
"What's going on?" Rachel takes his arm and
walks away from the
bedroom door.
"I had to call in the doctors from the
hospital, he's gotten worse."
"Why didn't you call?" Rachel knew his anger
needed a venting place
and didn't let his words hurt.
"I did, but you were already on the plane, no
good worrying you on
the
drive, you're here now."
"What are the doctors doing?" He asks,
wrapping his arms around her.
"It's bad Derek, but he doesn't want to go to
the hospital. They're
hooking up monitors and things. We can move
him to another room, if
you want."
"No, he should be here, in our bed, no where
else."
Rachel nods and one of the nurses comes out of
the room. "You can go
in now."
Derek walks in, his bedroom is transformed
into a hospital room
almost. Monitors blink and beep beside the
bed. Nick has an iv in
his
left arm and is staring up at the ceiling.
Slowly Derek sinks onto
the
bed beside him. "Hey." A tear slides down
Nick's cheek and Derek
wipes
it away. "You should have told me you were
this ill Nick, I wouldn't
have left you."
"I tried, but I couldn't. Kind of why I wanted
to make love before
you
left, I knew I wouldn't have much time."
Derek caresses his cheek. "You can't give up
hope my love, we'll
think
of something."
"Derek, don't."
"I won't give up on you, Nick, you can't either."
He pulls the young man up and hugs him tight.
Alex calls Derek and tells him about her visit
to Walker's friend.
And
about the experiment and the card from Dr
Seed. "How's Nick?"
"Not good, the doctors aren't very optimistic.
You should
investigate
these experiments more, see what you can come
up with."
"I really want to come back, Derek. I want to
see Nick before it's
too
late." Derek sighed.
"It's more important to gather this
information, maybe find
something
to help Nick, before it's too late."
The silence was deafening and Kristen took the
phone. "Derek, I'll
stay, see what I can find, Alex should go
back."
"I'll send Philip to join you, Rachel needs to
be here."
Derek searches the house for Philip, finding
him kneeling beside
Nick's bed, praying.
Philip raises his head, the tears visible on
his face. "It couldn't
hurt."
"No, I'm sure Nick appreciates it." Derek sits
on the bed and Philip
looks up at him. "Has he been awake?" Philip
shakes his head and
begins sobbing, holding Nick's hand in his.
"We need to be strong
for
him." Derek reaches out and gathers Philip in
his arms, kneeling
beside him, allowing the younger man to huddle
close.
"It's no' fair, Nick doesn't deserve this."
"No, he doesn't."
After a while Philip relaxes and pushes back
from Derek's arms.
"I'll
leave you two alone."
"I need for you to join Kristen in Washington,
she's got a lead
and Alex wants to head back here." Philip nods
and heads to his
room to pack.
Rachel sticks her head in. "Would you get me
some coffee, please.
I'm
almost asleep on my feet."
She nods and heads down to the kitchen. Derek
settles down beside
Nick, getting comfortable. Nick stirs and
blinks open his eyes. "Hi,
how are you feeling?"
"Tired," He sighs as Derek scoots closer,
feeling the warmth from the
other man. "Derek, I keep thinking there's
something I should
tell you now, something I should be doing. But
I just can't put my
finger on it."
"You should be well, working out and fighting
with me, like always."
Nick laughs a little. "Sounds good, but
there's something else, but I
can't remember it."
"Just rest now," Derek kisses his forehead.
"You'll remember, in
time."
"Hmmm, time." Nick was asleep with the last
word.
Rachel pushed the door open and brought a pot
of coffee and set on
the side table. "Is he asleep?"
"Yes," Derek pulled away and accepted the cup
Rachel handed. "He kept
saying there was something he was forgetting.
I guess it's just the
medication or the disease."
"Probably a little bit of both." Rachel sat
down on the opposite side
of the bed and took Nick's pulse. She checked
the monitors and iv,
making sure everything was in place and
working properly. "You should
get some rest. You're no good to him
exhausted."
"I know, but I'll lay here with him for a bit.
Has Alex called?"
Rachel shakes her head. "Why don't you call
Kristen, see what flight
Alex is taking. Tell Philip to stop in before
he leaves."
"Okay."
Derek Rayne--personal journal
It's so strange, he's grown so thin, just in
the last three weeks.
He's lost almost forty pounds. The doctors
have agreed to let him
stay at home, there is nothing they can do.
His body is shutting
down and there is nothing we can do to stop
it. You can still see
the spark behind his eyes, Nick is still
there, just so far away now.
His breathing is becoming more difficult, I'll
stay with him again
tonight and hold him for what might be our
last night together.
It was hard consoling Alex, they have been
through so much together.
Her grief is raw and real, like my own. She's
shut everyone out right
now, trying to deal with the impending loss in
her own way.
Philip and Kristen have returned from
Washington with few answers.
The lab is being investigated and I think
we're close. If only Nick
could hold on a little longer, perhaps we find
a way to save him.
end journal entry
Rachel pulls the door to a little as she sees
Derek step up. "Hi."
"How is he?" The same words, every time now.
Knowing the answer
before she utters it.
"No change, he asked for you earlier, I told
him you'd be here soon.
He doesn't even have a concept of time
anymore..." The tears begin
and
Derek pulls her close. "We've lost him Derek,
really lost him this
time."
"We must be strong, for him." Derek kisses her
forehead, "The doctors
are still looking for the problem Rachel, he
just has to hold on."
"I hear the doctors Derek, I know the lies
they tell to hide the
truth. He's dying Derek."
Derek pulls the hysterical woman tighter,
softening her cries in his
suit coat. "Rachel, please, we can't give up
hope." For a moment
longer he holds her, just until her sobs
lessen, then he goes inside
the room.
Nick is lying on his back in the bed, not
moving. The monitors around
the bed, blinking and beeping. He pushes down
the emotions and sits
on the side of the bed, taking Nick's hand in
his. "Hello, my love."
He brings Nick's hand up and kisses it. "Are
you ready for bed?" No
response. "Let's see shall we?" Derek pulls
back the covers and
checks
the assorted tubes and bags hooked up to the
young man. "How about I
rub your back, before we go to sleep, would
you like that?" Derek is
encouraged by a low moan and carefully pushes
Nick to his side.
Under
the thin pajamas top he massages and rubs a
moisturizer into the
delicate skin. He fights back the tears as his
hands skim over the
ribs, feeling each one. "So thin." Once he
finishes the gentle
massage
he readies himself for bed. Slipping out of
his clothes and into the
bed quickly. "Let's see, you were on your
right side, last night, the
left tonight. All right my love?" He leans
forward and kisses Nick's
neck, letting a tear fall on the pale skin.
He scoots close to Nick and adjusts his body
until he's flush against
the frail figure. Cradling the young man in
his arms as best he can
with all the tubes and iv's. "Never forget how
much I love you Nick,
never." The light switches off and he lies
there, listening to the
labored breathing and small sighs. After a
while he falls asleep,
dreaming of Nick the way he use to be.
A gentle nudge, almost like a hiccup awakens
him and blinks his eyes
open quickly. Nick is moving, but only
slightly. "What is it?"
Derek clicks on the light. Nick is staring at
him, his eyes blinking.
"What do you want?" Nick looks over his
shoulder at the monitoring
devices. "The noise?" A slight nod. "You want
me to turn them off?"
Again a nod. "Just for tonight, Rachel will
have my hide." A tear
slips from Nicks eye as Derek switches off the
blinking lights and
beeping noises. "All right now, time to rest."
Derek wipes away
the tear on Nick's cheek and leans down and
kisses his lips. "Good
night my love."
Flashes keep Derek awake most of the night.
When sleep comes it's
filled with dreams.
// Thank you Derek.
"For what?"
"Loving me, through everything, understanding
me when no one else did.
For letting me be who I needed to be and
accepting me for it. I'll
always love you Derek, but I have to go now."
"NO! No, Nick you can't. You can't leave me."
"Look at me Derek, you don't want to stay like
this, trapped inside
this body. I have to go now."
"Please Nick, don't go."
"Let me go Derek and live. Promise me that
you'll try and be
happy, not lock yourself up again."
"I can't."
"You have to Derek, or you'll not be able to
live."
"I don't want to anymore, not without you."
"Yes you do, we all want to live, down inside.
The pain will go
away, you just have to let it. Promise me."
"I can't."
"It's the last thing I'll ask Derek, promise
me, you'll love again
and
you'll never forget me."
"I'll never forget you my love, never."
"And that you'll love again, promise me that
Derek."
"I promise." //////
Derek awoke with a start, the figure before
him still and quiet.
"Nick?" He shakes him slightly, but nothing.
He listens for a heart
beat, nothing. "Oh Gott no, the machines." He
glances back in the
darkness, the machines are off and quiet.
"That's what you wanted
wasn't it, to be set free in peace." He kisses
Nick's lips again and
holds him for a long while.
The funeral is quiet and dark. Alex places the
urn of ashes in place
beside the lake. "He's come to you Julia, take
care of him, love him.
Remind him how much we'll miss him." She
turns to Derek who hasn't
said two words since Nick's death. "Derek."
Derek steps up to the urn, in it's guarded
case. He had refused to
let
them scatter the ashes. Instead he built a
cove near the lake to
have
them placed. He reaches out and touches the
bonze urn. "There
is a hole in my heart." He glances around at
the faces in the
funeral, not caring that some did not know of
his love for the young
man and then walks off.
The story continues in A Dish Served Cold.
